I DID IT, I DID IT

I FINALLY DID IT.  I REALLY DID.  I GAVE MY 3 GOLDENS SOME RAW MEAT TONIGHT.

I felt like some fried chicken gizzards, cream gravey and tossed salad for supper tonight.  The babies had chicken stew the past two night and tonight was fish night.  I could freeze the remaing gizzards for later on, but I decided to be brave and give a couple each to each of my dogs and they ate them.  I only gave each one two small gizzards (they eat over a pound of cooked when i boil them) and  they seemed to enjoy them.  Well, Honey wouldn't eat her's til she saw kayCee was eating hers.  Now if they don't get sick or have horrid poop, I will give them each a couple more tomorrow night.  If they have problems, YOU ALL WILL SURE HEAR ABOUT IT.[;)]

EDITED   NO, I will not go to raw feeding, and NO I will not switch from purina unless my dogs develop a problem, and NO i am to terrified of bones to even consider them.  The only reason i had never given them raw meat in the past is it turns my tummy to think of eating any meat that isn't next to charcoal!  But i fianlly braved it

They ate liver raw for the first time?

Gosh, it took me a couple times of putting it in Ella's bowl before she'd finally eat it.
Now she eats it without problems.

    Good for you!

I only give Ella no more than an ounce or two a day or she'll get runny poop from it.

No, it was chicken gizzards, not liver.  And I only gave them two small ones each. I can't believe I really handed them raw meat.  Honey put her's on the floor first, saw kayCee was eating her's, so honey then picked her's up and ate it and she didn't put the 2ed one down.  Liver is a little much for me to give them raw, at least now.  It is so bloody (Hey, I had liver and onions for my supper last night, but cooked until fork tender)

    oh!
Sorry, I am awfully tired and could've SWORN I read liver and then gizzards.

    I'm glad they liked it.
I usually cut liver into little one ounce pieces (a huge pain in the butt) and put into little baggies. Then I pull a baggy out of the freezer and when it comes time to feed it, I unzip the bag and plop it into her food bowl.

You're lucky, sandra, my dogs wont eat raw offal ie liver, gizzards etc. They have to be lightly sauteed for them to eat them.

    Cute Glenda!

Bubblegum gets the raw chicken necks, gizzards and hear of any whole chicken or turkey I buy...or my friend who buys a lot of whole organic chickens.   She does great with them, mainly because she is a big girl and there is not that much there for her. But if I do to and buy raw bones with meat to give her she usually ends of with diarrhea beause I give her too much.

THANKS.  Acutally I have never thought a little raw meat was bad for them in the least, in fact good for them.  I just couldn't get past the thought of eating raw meat myself.  .  None got sick, and their poops were perfectly normal.  But of course, they did only get two small gizzards each.  I think my "raw" will only consist of chicken hearts and gizzards, and possibily ground turkey (not beef tho) and only a few times a week, not daily. And I am almost sure I will never overcome my phobia about bones after seeing that lab pup.

I just wanted to say that it's probably a good idea not to give too much organ meat; I'm not sure how much organ meat to feed when you're feeding kibble but most raw diets only use about 5% organ meat. Also, beef heart is considered muscle meat since the heart is a made of muscle, ( I didn't know that until a few weeks ago), so chicken hearts are probably the same.[:)]

Good to know for us kibble supplementers.  I have not fed raw since shortly after I got my dog a few months ago but I'm guessing the organ meat recommendation would apply to cooked meat used to supplement kibble.

I just cooked some chicken liver last night (with lots of water).  In the future maybe I should stick to a package of hearts and gizzards along with a pack of boneless muscle meat for my broth and low protein kibble protein booster.

I don't mix much meat with the higher protein kibbles but will sometimes give a little as a snack a couple of hours after her dinner especially if we have chili or something else that does not have dog friendly table scraps.

Yes, I knew from my vet that to much organ meat is not good but he did not give me a %.  This has been a while back when I first started cooking almost daily for them (the crock pot cooking is a great way to make a whole weeks worth at one time, jut have to heat up what you want..  I also am assuming chicken hearts is muscle meat.  I do think mine get more than 5% cooked organs.  My chicken stew this week was 5 pounds of thighs and l pound hearts=6 pounds, and one pound of calf liver. They will get fish 2-3 nights this week.  And they got those gizzards last night (with fish) and tonight they will a couple more each.

I like to supplement Jessie's kibble with some meat too.[:)] She can't eat the newer higher protein low fat senior diets like the one Eagle Pack makes because of her allergy to chicken , so I add the meat like you do to boost the protein. I was thinking of feeding raw when searching the web for ways to boost her immune system when she was having so many problems because of her environmental allergies, but there are so many variations of raw diets and it's hard to know which ones have the right nutritional balance. She does get some NV raw for lunch occasionally and she loves it.

Yeah, on another of my all breed boards raw has been discussed.  One, who has goldens and feeds raw also feeds  a few veggies &  fruits and different supplements as that is what the diet she follows says to do.  Another for 4 chihuahua feeds nothing but meat.  No veggies, no fruits, no sups--that is what the diet she follows says.Which is right?  I am going to stick with the "tried and true" in my case and feed mine the kibble and cooked, but will start giving a tad of raw as treats.
