Oh, my dogs get their digest, by products and corn from their kibble each day, so i don't have to add it.

    And...ZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but this whole thread is ridiculous. Almost every single post in it made me roll my eyes. Someone says Purina, and that's the end of the world, really? If someone's feeding something you think is crap, go ahead and tell them that, hopefully with a little tact, and ONCE, and if they ignore it, LEAVE IT ALONE. You can't change people.

I've never fed Purina, so I don't know how my dog would do on it, but ingredients are important to me, and I don't like Purina's ingredients, so I doubt if I will ever feed it. That's my choice. As it's, for example, Sandra's choice to feed her dogs Purina, and guess what? She actually has experience with it. She's not telling me to stop feeding Timberwolf Organics and start feeding Purina, because her dogs do well on it, even though she has no experience with Timberwolf, and I'm not going to tell her to stop feeding Purina and start feeding Timberwolf, even though I have no experience with Purina.

It seems to me that a lot of the "Purina people" are a lot smarter, or at least learn quicker, than a lot of the "premium people". At least they don't go around practically prosetylizing about dog food. [&o]

I totally agree with whoever said dog food was a "hot topic" along with religion and politics, but I also want to add parenting to that list. Ever have or witness a spanking/no spanking debate? [;)]

And as I said earlier, I looked all over my box of food coloring this morning and did not see a single warning about getting cancer, etc if I used to much.  So I don't think food coloring in the food is gonna hurt them one bit.

You don't mention a specific color but red food coloring, which I do not think is in Purina Dog Chow, is sometimes made from beetles and can cause an allergic reaction and no warning on the label is required.

"While shocking, it's perfectly legal, the paper reports. Foodmakers don't have to list the bug-based ingredient, because beetles are part of nature."

Ok, all I can say is that I'm darned glad I wasn't available today or I'd have gotten myself in a world of trouble.

    This is nonsense.

Oh, and I fed a super premium....primarily Innova but I've added Canidae into a rotation...and my dogs get either raw or homecooked for dinner.  Why?  Because I personally do not trust any food to be 100% nutritionally complete.

OK! Now, show me where this expert has answered the question? The question that is posed in your quote: How does one go about choosing a pet food?

They state that any food that has passed AAFCO testing is worth a try, because there is no one right dog food, and not enough information on a package to chose one, that was implied in the answer.

um, I thought any dog food on the market was AAFCO approved?
    no?
If not, I don't know where I've been...

You know what I think is crazy? Foodadditivesworld.com, which is basically a pro-dye website, I think it's the site of the makers of food dye, says this about "Blue #2" dye: "Minimize use in pet foods- acceptable for pet treats." ([linkhttp://www.foodadditivesworld.com/fdc-blue-no2-lake.html]http://www.foodadditivesworld.com/fdc-blue-no2-lake.html[/link]) And from Purina's Beneful's ingredients: "added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2),". Real nice, yeah?

I just wonder ... how many of us eat organic, holistic foods every day of our lives?  I know I don't.  I want what works best for me, and for my dogs.  I had good results with Pro Plan but I refused to feed 2 different brands because one dog needed something different.  I've found something that works for both - but to be honest with you - I don't think I'll be on the kibble bandwagon very long anyway.

Who said dogs must be fed organic, holistic foods?  Some people do but I haven't seen it in this thread.  It seems the main debate here is whether ingredients matter in determining how good a food is.

I don't think silver_wlf meant actually feeding holistic, organic food to your dog. I think she was just ;pointing out that there are much better ingredients that us, as humans can eat but don't...and the same goes for the ingredients in dog food. Some can feed organic holistic type foods or feed foods that don't have those types of ingredients. She is just pointing out that she feeds what works - even if the so called "quality" isn't as good as some people think that it could be. And I really don't think she was joining the debate...just adding her opinion.

Not all foods have passed AAFCO feeding tests,I believe they  must be formulated to meet the AAFCO nutrient profile but do not need to pass AAFCO feeding tests.  It will state on the bag whether it has passed the feeding tests, most of the large companies put there foods thru the AAFCO feeding tests and again it will say on the bag.

Not necessarily, Nature#%92s Logic is one that doesn#%92t meet AAFCO nutrient requirements.

Nature#%92s Logic diets exceed all AAFCO recommended minimums on amino acids and exceed almost all recommended minimums on vitamins and minerals

Geez.....I wonder if a few of you posters realize that you have stooped to a new low by posting some of the things that you are saying.  I thought that in my last post I was reading posts about as bad as it would get....never figured they would go down even further.
Sandra,,,,I honestly give you a heck of a lot of credit for holding firm. You know what is best for your dog..and you are not letting anyone intimidate you.
For whoever that was that mentioned that maybe new people might accidentally feed Purina if they didn't know any better.....but by reading this thread now they know......well, Purina didn't get to be as big as they are with millions of people feeding it, by killing dogs as some people here might want you to think.

And I suppose that the big cigarette manufacturers didn't get as big as they got, making millions and millions of dollars every year by making products that killed people?  Heck no!!!!!!  , .....Why  I know someone that has an uncle that is 82 and he  has smoked Pall Malls  since he was 14 , and other than  having some shortness of breath, is perfectly healthy.  So all these people picking on big tobacco companies are the same type of whiners  that bash Purina.....  they are just jealous of successful  companies.....  And to the silly  people that look at the ingredients in their dog's food and judge it by that, that is totally ridiculous..  One should not look at what is in the food but instead should look at how much the company sells.. The company that sells the most has to be the best, regardless of what the food is made of. i.e.  Road kill and euthanized animals and cows that died from all kinds of illnesses including cancer ,  and oil that sat in the back of a restaurant for 6 months in 55 gallon drums  before it was dumped on your dogs kibble to fool your dog into eating that crap that it was dumped on,  are all good things... They give the food a certain quality that is impossible to duplicate by company's that only use healthy ingredients......

When we were kids I would take my sister and brothers on a picnic in the woods and we would have jelly sandwiches, cookies and milk.  Only I one day i put food coloring into the pint jars of milk--green for me, pink (red coloring) for my sister, and blue for the boys.  And me and the boys pooped colored poop.  But we thought drinking bue and green and pink milk was so great Mom started putting the food coloring in our milk.  I had not thought about that in years.

Not necessarily, Nature's Logic is one that doesn't meet AAFCO nutrient requirements.

Right  I believe they must at least meet the minimums where those are established , and not exceed the the maximums where those are established.

Here is what it says on there site:

Dog and cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" must meet standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. The AAFCO's Canine Nutrition Expert (CNE) Subcommittee and Feline Nutrition Expert (FNE) Subcommittee have established new nutrient profiles for "complete and balanced" dog and cat foods. Dog Food Nutrient Profiles were established in 1991 and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles were established in 1992. Both were updated in 1995 to incorporate new scientific information.

What I am not sure about is if you can sell a dog food and not label it complete and balanced and then you don't have to meet there requirements.  That is not clear from there site, but it sounds like you can as long as you don't claim that  it  is complete and balanced .

Here is the profile if anyone is interested.

They recently finished an AAFCO feeding trial, so they can now say the food is 100% complete and balanced for all life stages;     [linkhttp://www.natureslogic.com/news/showarticle.php?ArticleID=18]http://www.natureslogic.com/news/showarticle.php?ArticleID=18[/link]
