Does anyone remember how that quote goes that says something like,"Let food be thy medicine" and then says something about nature???

Then there's the quote from Hippocrates(5th century BC)

"Leave your drugs in the chenists pot if you can heal your patients with food"

Yes environmental and genetics factor in to disease, but please, lets give what our dogs are getting fed(their fuel) every single day of their lives the credit and respect it deserves.

Which problems do my dogs have that are caused by their food? Is it Bucks' arthritis at age almost 12 (you should have seen him dragging me on our 1 1/2 mile walk this afternoon). Or is it his problem with night vision. Perhaps his low thyroid?

Just because goldens are prone to so many things doesn't mean you can't try to prevent them, nor does it mean one should sit back and accept their dogs fate just because they are "prone" to any disease.

The only thing i am accepting is that my dogs are doing great on what I feed them and if i start messing around, they may not do so great.  Their immune system may get fouled up and causes allergies in Honey and Buck who  have none, or cause more in kayCee besides the enviromental ones she has now.  Their immune system gets messed up and it can bring a number of autoimmune diseases.  And I know first hand autoimmune diseases are NOT fun--my RA is autoimmune disease.  My Hunter died of autoimmune disease when he was fouled up with that proheart6.  It was killing his liver--and it did the same to many, many dogs--and caused the AIHA.   You remember ProHeart6, that new miracle of heartworm protection that you only had to get the injection 2 times a year.  It was the best of the best--til it started causing so many reactions and deaths that the FDA "requested" it be taken off the market after only 3 years because of the high number of rections and deaths.  Many dogs had no problems, many others died.  I went back to my good old Interceptor. And i am staying with it because it works for my dogs.  And the same goes with their food.  I am not going to risk causing problems for them when they are doing just great on what they are on.

EXACTLY why I don't want to start switching.    They are doing great on what they are on and how do i know a different one will not upset their immune systerm.  Buck has been on Puriana his entire life --11 3/4 years--except for the 3 months on SD.  KayCee has been on purina her entire life--7 years--except for a few months on SD, and Honey has been on purina for almost 4 years, and maybe even before we got her. I could start tinkering around and cause all kinds of problems that do not exist.  The grass may look greener on the other side of the fence, but once there it could be poison ivy!

By the way, those diseases you listed are human are they not?  I can attest to the fact my rheumatoid arthritis was not brought on by me eating Purina Dog Food.  I m the only one in the family clear back to grandparents to have it.  I had rheumatic fever when i was 10--brought on by bad tonsils and a bad case of strept throat according to the doctor, and possibly this is follow up to it, i dn't know.

After reading your previous post detailing your dogs problems,i cant remember if you included the dog that died of bone cancer ? Then reading the above i have decided That is it! I am bowing out of this conversation before i pop a vein in my head!
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, my 12 1/2 year old irish Setter died of bone cancer 9 years ago.  Now don't tell me that only purina, iams, Hills, etc fed dogs die of bone cancer and that if I had been feeding him whatever you feed your dogs he would not have gotten cancer.

I just don't understand why it is that if a premium fed dog dies of cancer, liver disease, heart attack, seizures,  epilepsy, allergies,  stroke, it is just luck of the draw.  But let a Hills, pedigree, Purina, Iams, etc dog die of any of them and it is instantly the garbage dog food that caused it.

EDITED  I thought i would throw in a picture or two of Boots so you could see how horrible he looked on purina dog chow.  He liked to get up in the chair, turn around and sit on the table so he could see what i was doing on the kitchen counter.  he knew he wasnt suppose to do that, but he just couldn't resist.  my son snapped this picture as when I moved to get the camera, he would get down.  On this day Ron sneaked up on him.

Why was this thread started anyway?  Just to aggravate and get a fight started.

It would be SO great if everyone kept an open mind and stopped thinking they know what's right for every dog out there and that all vets know nothing.

I could start my own thread, "WHAT is up with all the close minded people"?

And, I find it disgusting that some of you are throwing Sandra's past dogs deaths in her face like this.

Nice try....I too am glad that the Dems have taken a bit more power......I'm tired of being bent over and screwed by the Republicans....and yeah, whoever said same sh*t different piles is right, but if its all in the same pile it tends to get too big.....as we've seen in recent years.

Hey, here's a thot....how about we feed GW Purina and see how HE does on it???

Well, we can definately expect higher taxes now with the Dems in there...oh happy happy joy joy! [;)]

Well....let's not forget who left us with a surplus and who's left us with a deficit.

IMO - my politics are libertarian - this last administration was a great example of how absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Having the house, senate and executive be all one party is just an invitation for extreme agendas.  I think if the H and S remain democratic the E should be republican - one way to make sure a moderate view prevails. IMO at least.

And I'm in PA singing "Ding Dong the Prick is Dead" as "Pr...Rick Santorum is on his way out -here's your hat what's your hurry?"

Really, for all our griping about politians, I am just thankful we don't live in countries like Russia, China, Iran, Iraq, N. Korea where talking like we are talking here could get us thrown in jail or worse.  WE have the total freedom to poke fun at, to grumble about any or all of them--and I most certainly do my share of it because I can.  A LOT of people have died---going back to the Revolutionary War--so that we have this freedom.   But i suspect many more have died in some of the named countries (and others) because they spoke out  about their leaders without having the freedom to do so.

But I certainly do believe there are limitations as to how far a body should go.  It galled me to the bone to see the American flag being burned and considered a 'freedom of speech"    What did that flag going up on Iwo Jima mean?  It meant we were getting closer to end of that war we wamted so badly to end.  Remember the firemen raising the flag on 9-11?    That meant this was America and we had been attacked, but we were still here, still a nation.

There is just something about the American flag and the National Anthem that makes me get a lump in my throat, tears in my eyes and a tightning in my chest.

Show me the scientific proof that X food is better then Y food.  Prove to me that there are scientific trials which show that Purina or Iams or whatever is causing problems and that the Premium brand isn't.  I want proof.  To be honest vets guess half the time as to what the problem is if the tests are inconclusive.  If a dog is injured well that is an easy fix.   I keep hearing how food makes that much of a diiference  then prove it scientifically.  I frankly could care what anyone feeds if their dog is healthy.  Most of the Purina feeds have been on the market for many years and if it was found that the food was causing health issues or death that if would be ripped off the market.
    Feed what works best.
