WHAT is with the Purina people?

This IS a message board and we SHOULD all have the right to post and discuss, and we all must be prepared for people to "politely" disagree with us. But "politely" disagreeing is not telling someone to keep trying to find other food while their pet is happy and healthy. Politely disagreeing is not telling someone that the food they feed is garbage. There were so many rude and obnoxious things said on this thread to pretty much one person, and I haven't really noticed that she retaliated with any of the same rudness.

Well said, I agree.  This is getting uglier than my VW forum!!!!  And those guys can bring rudeness to a new level.  Yes I do hang out in a car forum with mostly guys.  What a enlightening experience that is.  I am a glutton for punishment indeed.  Abby's Dad said lets talk about corn.  Any thoughts on that subject.  Is the problem that it is just a filler?  And other better filler/grains would be better?  I am talking about dogs that do NOT have sensitivities to it okay.  Meaning you had an allergy test done to prove such, not that you see them scratching, that might be seasonal or environmental in nature then and I see so many just blame food first.  When it often is not the problem.  And you throw the dog into a tailspin healthwise by then abruptly changing diets over and over searching for the cure.  Isn't gluten meal better than just corn?  I am told it is -lower down and in smaller amounts.

    One simple question:

4 people, 4 dog foods, 4 healthy dogs.  How does a new dog owner decide what food to TRY?

And, for the record, if anyone truthfully admits to me on this board that they BLINDLY TRUST A MANUFACTURER'S CLAIMS as a basis for feeding their dog,  I will apologize personally to that person for calling him or her stupid, and donate $20 to my local SPCA.  Your admission must be in the form:

"I fully trust, without question or exception, that the manufacturers of all dog foods will be completely truthful and open about how nutritious their brand of dog food is for my dog. My trust is so complete, that I would not care if there were no ingredients listed on the bag."

My chequebook awaits. (and yes, I will show evidence of my donation on this board).

I see it as a very good ad to try to draw feeders of other brands to food.  I still see nothing that says their other foods are full of stuff they shouldn't be.

Ever see the ads for Campbells Select soups on TV?  It is high dollar soup and they really advertise how great it is.  BUT they don't say their other soups are not fit to eat, etc.  And then there are all the ads for the Campbells Chunky soups and how great they are.  And than the ads for the cheaper condensed soup--which they also advertise as being healthy for you.  That is 3 different levels of soup by Campbells and each are advertised as being healthy and nutritious for you.  I see the same thing with the purina foods--different levels to suit different tastes and different "requirements" as to what the pet owners want or don't want in their dog food.  Is pretty simple to me.

Oh, when I worked in the sporting goods and helped with the ads, we always made more of our higher priced  big name shot guns than our lower priced ones because we wanted to sell more of them as they brought a bigger profit.  however, when I bought a new one, I went for the much cheaper Ithaca 20 ga. and it had as much firepower as my brother's  more expensive 20ga. Remington.  My neice is using it now, 41 yeas later.

I think it is rather ironic that a couple of people screaming the loudest about how Purina feeders are feeding crap and killing there dogs, feed a food that is made by Diamond at a Diamond facility.

Very few companies don't have any skeletons in their closets. Purina has recalled its poultry, deer and livestock feed in the US because of various problems, and in Venezuela last year they killed over 400 pets with aflatoxin contaminated food.

Better yet why don't those who dislike Purina so much buy a bag of Premium food and send it to the Purina People on this board,LOL.  Some of the dog food out there runs $50 bucks a bag...don't like what Purina people feed then send a bag or two to them,LOL!

I wish i could get you to donate as the SPCA is one of the many animal charities I donate to, not only rescue but also health (Morris Animal Foundation).  BUT I have repeatedly said i use purina because I saw how it worked for my Dad's dogs and my dogs--and I have owned my own dogs 50 years.  Someone called me brainwashed by purina ads--i had to reply i do not pay much attention to ads.  I was brainwashed by  watching and being with Purina dogs all my life and seeing how it worked for them.

I seldom pay any attention to ads on TV.  When they come on i go get a drink of water, cup of coffee, got to bathroom, spend a few minutes on the computer (leave it on most of the time) do a couple of chores.  There are a few exceptions--I love the Bud commercials with the Clydesdale horses and always watch them.  But i don't drink beer, they have not brainwashed me into drinking bear.  I also love the Bush's beans as they use the golden retriever, Duke, in those ads.  And I was using Bush beans before those ads ever hit the TV.  Only time I read ads in paper is when I am looking for something specific--new recliner, i look at furniture ads, etc.

Maybe you should donate $20 to your SPCA  just to be nice!  And they can always use any donations they get.  I am going to write out one this morning to the Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid Florida (GRRMF).   I know, I am in Texas and they are in Florida, but a couple of years they had a very specail golden there and his story was told on one of my golden forums and i sent a donation for his care, and have been donating ever since.

So we agree that I did not call you stupid (since you did not base your decision on a manufacturer's claims).  My invitation stands, lest I be further accused of calling anyone on this board stupid.

I donate regularly to the OSPCA, and volunteer when I can, so I echo your sentiment toward animal rescue organizations.  I don't think we'll argue on that point.

That was my point exactly and why I ended rest of my quote with  "The bottom line is you can find reasons to feed and not to feed just about any dog food, so really the ultimate test is if it works for your dog."   I would never say someone is killing there dog because of what they feed, you can't really tell that over the internet,  and I would certainly never say that with such conviction if my food was produced by Diamond. It's that whole glass house thing.

If people want to trust Purina, or any other manufacturer, without thinking, no problem. Nobody is denying that stupid people exist. A fool and his money...stabilize the economy

Actually what you said didn't mention manufactures claims, ads, etc, just the company name.  Since i trust purina as much as i can trust any company, I would say you did call me stupid.  SOOOO hows about going half way and donating an extra $10 to your local SPCA!

Good try though.  The OSPCA gains $5 so far for your effort.  My original offer still stands.  Let's make it $25...anyone?

    Holy Crap!![:o]
I haven#%92t really looked at the nutrition threads for a day or two and the last time I saw this thread there were 3 replies.

I am not trying to come down on either side but I seriously don#%92t understand how these threads get so chalked full of controversy. As a feeder of both Purina One for over 10 years and a bunch of premium to super premium foods I just don#%92t get how things get so worked up.  I am currently a $50 a bag feeder and my current food seems to have excellent results for my pups with allergies, sensitive tummies…etc.   BUT if a food that was $10 a bag worked best for me, then that is what I would feed.

[8D] I think I need to go back to the 25 page TWO thread and discuss dog poop, crockpotting and salmon oil.   [;)]

After reading this thread, I don't feel like feeding any brand of dog food to Prince.

I think today I will switch him to marshmallows and tater tots.
    • Gold Top Dog
Make sure you compare marshmallow brands before you choose!  [:D][;)]

Um...what brand of marshmallows and what brand of tater tots? [:D]
    • Gold Top Dog
Are the tater tots fried or baked? What are they fried in? [:D]
