However, Kelly, personal attacks are a violation of forum rules and THAT sounded suspiciously like a personal attack to me.  Dvet and I don't happen to share many of the same opinions, however, I respect his years of experience and I really hate to see someone dumping on him and basically telling him that he's a washed up old geezer.

There may have been some personal attacks recently, but the two examples you gave weren't. You capitalized retired in your post, the OP didn't. That changed the whole tone of the statement. I believe the intent was to state a fact. It would be different if what was said was untrue. Sorry, but I think people have been a little quick to police other people lately, when it hasn#%92t been necessary. No one said anything even implying “washed up old geezer”.

    Thank you, Sooner.

I'm sorry Dvet.  I am not at all insinuating that you are a "washed up old geezer."

Actually, animal nutrition has changed so much in the last few years that I know pet store managers that used to be really current on their animal nutrition, when Nutro was the best food 5 years ago.  Now they are asking me all sorts of questions to catch up.  And they are by no means "old geezers."

Once again, I'm sorry if I came accross that way.  I respect your opinion, but I don't agree with it.  And I'm sure you feel the same about mine.

Excuse me for having my own opinion and having the nerve to state it.

This is going to get the little lock up prize folks!!!  tee hee

I do not think that dvet is going to be upset cause people disagree.  In fact he started another thread with another catchy title to stir the pot some more.

This is a guy that loves/plays music and has an inkling for this forum.  He sounds like he is not thin skinned, but pretty well rounded almost 80 year old guy.

Whens the birthday dvet?  [;)] I know it will be happy because he has a wife that still will do the jitterbug with him, and that is cute.  Even if he says that they do lousy, I think he is a hoot. And I am sure he can dance with her a lot better than a lot of people, including me!

I love talking to "old timers" and have found I can learn as much, if not more, from them than from books.(about some things, not all)  Didn't always feel like that.  After all, they had been out of school for years and i had only been out a few years.    Was old timers that taught me how to salt water fish when we first moved down here.  Get an old, old timer talking about WWII and see tears and choked up voice and you will know more what it was like for them than reading all the books in the world can tell you.  Now that I am an "old timer", I have to talk to old, old timers for my stories, information, etc. LOL

Dvet started this thread he knew it was going to be controversial.

I agree. All the threads that I've seen started by Dvet are ones that seem to be designed to be controversial with titles like this one.

hey dogslife,,,you are right I am not thin skinned, at this stage it takes a heck of a lot to get me upset and I do learn from all the posts..I don;t agree with the posts of a lot and I wish I could make the profit that some vets and some exotic feed sompanies make by selling certain foods that some of the posters buy..I have yet to see a post that I think will do any harm...I think a lot of them are wastefull and expensive but, again not harmfull..also if you ever saw my wife and me try to jitterbug you could have a laugh to hold you for at least a week

I saw a list once of all the foods studied after the dog and cat thing came out,and it listed which brands had the euthanasia drug(pentobarbital??) among other things, and quite a few came up positive [&o] Where do the 30 million plus euthanised pets each year end up?Do they have a huge crematorium where they are cremated,or do they get shipped off to a rendering plant? Some folk would say it's a waste of "good meat"(yes i have heard that statement said before [:@] ).Can you imagine how much pet food could be made up from just the euthanised pets each year?? Not even factoring in the 4d cattle etc. Loads!! The manufacture gets cheap product and the despatcher gets paid by someone who's willing to take it off their hands... Putting all emotion and disgust aside, this would make sense,no?

How do we know for sure that dogs and cats etc dont end up in pet foods? If i fed a food that was indicated in doing this i wouldnt want to believe the "rumours" either.

It's easier and just gives me piece of mind to avoid any product that has anything negative associated with it.Until someone can prove otherwise,i'll believe the "rumours",better to be safe than sorry.

I actually worry less about the idea of dog and cat meat and more about horse meat.  Most people cannot bury their horses after death.  They call the rendering plant and they take the carcass for $70.  Most horses anymore do not die natual deaths--they are put to sleep.  Out of the 10 horses we have had die since I've been at our barn, only 2 have died on their own.  One almost instantly in a freak accident and one of old age.  Even of those put to sleep, one had EPM, one had horrible cancer, one blood poisoning, etc.  They all had numorous substances not approaved for consumption in their systems--dewormers, vaccinations, painkillers, varying suppliments.......

Back in the day, I'm thinking MOST of the horsemeat came from hunting the wild mustangs and shooting them to thin the herds.  I read about that once and wish that I could remember where.

Even farm horses who were put down were normally put down with a single bullet to the brain, thus eliminating at least the concern about euth drugs.

Now, agreed.  The thot of horsemeat in dogfood is downright scarey.
    • Gold Top Dog
Do you know what's even scarier?  The horses sold into slaughter in the US.  Most of the horses sold at auction were not meant for slaughter, but happened to be bought by a kill buyer.  Most of these horses are also sold as UTD on shots, dewormer, and fractious ones are often given trancs to help them sell better, or are on pain meds.  Just about ANYTHING you give a horse now states "Not for use in horses intended for human concumption."  Kill buyers then buy these animals and often ship them straight to slaughter.  Be happy we don't eat horsemeat in the US......

Just for the record off of the FDA site:

Dogs, cats not found in dog food

CVM scientists, as part of their investigation, developed a test to detect dog and cat DNA in the protein of the dog food.  All samples from the most recent dog food survey (2000) that tested positive for pentobarbital, as well as a subset of samples that tested negative, were examined for the presence of remains derived from dogs or cats.  The results demonstrated a complete absence of material that would have been derived from euthanized dogs or cats.  The sensitivity of this method is 0.005% on a weight/weight basis; that is, the method can detect a minimum of 5 pounds of rendered remains in 50 tons of finished feed.  Presently, it is assumed that the pentobarbital residues are entering pet foods from euthanized, rendered cattle

Yet people still keep buying books that state the opposite, the authors must be laughing all the way to the bank.
