What's for Supper

I guess it was more like a chowder than a real soup with pieces of shredded chicken, crushed bone and the "mushy" veggies and fruit---hubby called it soup.  And i  add what little liquid there is to their food as i know it is full of nutrients as well.  I don't really worry about getting water into my dogs, they all drink a lot.  My old man is getting SO spoiled that  he will go and stand at the water pan and i have to empty it and  ;put fresh water in it--even if the water has only been in their 15 minutes.  He thinks he is a PC (priviledged character)    My last irish Setter would not let his water pan sit empty.  It was an old stainless steel 2 1/2 quart pan tht had belonged to my mom.  Handle broke and she was going to toss it, but I got it for a water pan for Boots.  Anuyway, the minute it was empty...even if he had just drained it, he would pick that heavy pan up and bring it to the nearest person and put it in their lap.

Sandra, you might have missed my last post,,,did you just put enough water in to cover the chicken?  I know crock pots seem to make a lot of their own water.
Speaking of drinking enough water,,, I know I posted this picture before but this is Ollie EVERYTIME he was in my house! Every time you couldn't find him, you always knew to check in the laundry room where he would be standing waiting for a drink of fresh running water!

That's really cute, Dyan! Ollie is such a handsome guy.

I think I'm going to crock pot a rabbit. Anybody know how offensive rabbit stew smells? Any ideas on yummy seasonings (there will be garlic, and probably carrot, potato, and green beans) that the puppers will like? Rabbits have small enough bones, that I think they'd turn to mush. Emma can't have chicken, and I think most everything else is too big.

I would think rabbit would do just fine cooked like that.  And Dyan, I cover the chicken and then add just a tad more water so it won't go to low over night.  And even if you do have more water at the end, it is great dished over their kibble.  Has lots of nutrients in it, mostens the kibble and apparently tasts good to the dogs.

My dogs are going to think they've died, and gone to Sandra's[:D]

I think I'll buy a rabbit, on Friday, and some veggies to go with it. They're going to LOVE this.

My last crockpot meal I put in chicken thighs with most of the skin (stupid) cause it was too fatty.

I got an anti-yeast recipe which is chicken meat (thighs or legs) or other meat and a bag of frozen veggies.
I throw in some garlic and onions and celery if I have it,,,but remove the onions before I serve the dogs.  After you cook the meat for hours and hours with a little water , you toss in a big bag of mixed veggies for 1/2 hour or so and serve.   It was so yummy that I served myself too!   My DH smelled it , but when I said it was dog food, he would not take a helping !  His loss !

Before I did remove the bones, but I might try it again and test the bones.

Maybe I'm just overly cautious but I won't give my dogs anything that has been cooked with onions, and that includes the little dab of leftover anything that has been cooked with onions. I use extra garlic now in place of onions in just about everything that I cook so that the small amounts of leftover whatever CAN go into their homecooked pot.

[sm=rotfl.gif]  No, they are going to know "Mommy" cooked for them.  I stored all the left over in large glass container with lid and I took out half of it last night and heated and added to their kibble.  Tonight they are getting salmon, tomorrow the rest of the "soup".

Thanks Sandra, you gave me a great idea, and when I read this post I was at the grocery store late last night. I am doing your recipe but I added a few non salty spices, garlic, cranberries, zuchinni, and it smells WONDERFUL. I also skinned the chicken. I'll let you know how they like it. I can't wait.

I would think you could add anything in the world that isn't bad for dogs and make the most marvelous soup or stew or casserole or whatever you want to call it, for them. Mine get dry kibble in the morning, and then about 1 1/2 cups of this over their 1 1/2 cups of kibble at night.    They get the rest of it tonight, so will hve to pick up more stuff tomorrow and start a pot tomorrow night--tomorrow night is fish again.  I do have 3 golden retrieves from 67 to 75 pounds.

An old musher term for stew or chili homecooked for the team was slump. Meat, some vegetables, some supplements. It's like a really thick stew, kind of sludgy.

Yep, that describes it exactly.  They got the last of that batch tonight.   Hubby had left out and run a load to houston, but had to come back and is leaving out again in about an hour--napping right now.  i did kraut and pork roast for us.  A german lady that was our neighbor in Ohio showed me how to make kraut that is so good--start with a jar of kraut from the store and added about 1/2 can of diced tomatoes (i feeze th rest of  the can to use later in chili, or more  kruat) 1/2 of a small head of cabbaged shredded, about 1/2 small onion diced and 1/2 small green pepper (or handful of frozen)and a little water, and about a  level teaspoon of sugar, bring to boil and then cover, reduce heat and cook for about 3 hours.

Well, THIS could have worked out better. I started Bubbys chicken last night after work. For some reason my "sixth sense" baby KNEW it was for her,,from the second I took the chicken out of the fridge.   I got it cooking in the slow cooker and it drove her nuts the whole entire night. She kept going down to stare at the slow cooker....and prancing, galloping, running,,,etc etc etc around the house.  But the time we went to bed she was so hyper that I couldn't stand it. Every time I got up,,she ran into the kitchen to be the first one there, thinking that she was going to eat.   HHHmmm!  So I think now that its the next day, she has gotten "used" to it and isn't running around anymore.  I just cooked the chicken all night and this morning I threw in a bag of mixed frozen veggies,,,and now off to the store to buy some other fresh veggies to put in it.   I sure hope those bones get soft because now I am having "second thoughts" that a small bone might have broken off in the mess and she will choke.   Geez,,,ever the worrying mom!

I have not had a problem, can crumble them with my fingers.  and you know what a worry wart i am about bones!  If I had 1/2% of doubt I would not give it to them.  And even tho the recipe said the bones would crimble in your fingers, i held my breath until i actually tested them and found they did crumble, just like the bones in canned salmon.  I hope Bubby enjoys it as much as my dogs do.
