Evo RF

and dear LORD, I can only IMAGINE the ash content in THAT food.

The Evo RF? This made me curious, so I looked it up. 11.41%. Less than regular Evo (12.38%), more then the RM (9.77%).

that's still WAY too much ash content for MY liking, at any rate.

    Thank you for posting that![:D]

Sure. I don't really worry about ash, but I always add water to Cherokee's food anyway (she probably hates me for this..her food, no matter what it is, is ALWAYS soupy), and from what I've gathered, high ash isn't a problem in high moisture diets.

But I'm gonna hi-jack this thread for a minute to ask if you had trouble getting Ella to eat raw chicken? Cherokee won't touch it unless it's very lightly seared on the outside, and even then, she won't actually eat it, just licks it and plays with it for a while. I've tried chicken necks, backs, wings, legs, and even boneless breasts, and it's always the same. But she LOVES raw beef, I just can't see how to center a raw diet around beef. Short ribs seem like the only thing she can actually consume, and they're too expensive to be any big part of her diet. Did Ella like the chicken right away, or what? Just looking for ideas... Thanks.

Is she on any meds? If she is, that could be making her picky. Ella will eat just about anything I put down in front of her now. It took maybe once or twice of putting it down, her not eating it, and me taking it back up and not feeding her until her next meal, for her to get that I wasn't messing around.
What I do is, if I sense that she's having a hard time getting into a food I give her, I'll coax her through it. If it's boned meat, I'll hold it for her. I DID have to hold the chicken leg quarter for her.
She didn't want to eat a raw boneless skinless chicken breast I gave her. She got over that as soon as she saw me take it from her.
I'm trying to think. It sounds to me like, your dog may not understand chicken? It has a different consistency than beef so she may not be sure about it. My only suggest is...wait. Does she prefer ground meat to most anything else? Ella does. It's easier for her to eat that way (she's lazy). You could try and put it in the blender to break it up a bit. I do this with gizzards.

    Hope that helps some![;)]

I posted something on this before.  It is an outdated and proven false medical fact that ash causes UTI problems.http://www.purina.ca/cats/nutrition.asp?article=89.

Ash is basically the minerals left after burning something down (yes, I know it's more complicated than that, but that's basically what it is without getting into degrees and so on).

Foods with high meat and no grains  will naturally have higher ash content than foods with more grain.  Here's why...if you burn a bunch of grains and the same mass of meat, the meat will leave more ash because meat contain more minerals (bones).  Another way to explain this is...What burns faster? Meat or Grains?

Chealsea - go to Monica Segals site - she sells a primer booklet for about $5 that has raw diets,,,very good.  You will be amazed.  She includes a little of everything to balance a raw diet.

Hey! I spent like 10 minutes writing out a response to this last night, and it's not here! What happened to it?? I don't understand!

Well..anyway..she's not on meds, she used to be picky, but hasn't really been recently. Cherokee likes all beef. Bones, chunks, ground, whatever, but doesn't like raw chicken in any form. Since it seems that she just honestly doesn't like it, I don't think I want to tough it out and force her to eat it, but I don't know how I'd do a raw diet with no chicken. I haven't really tried much else. Lamb is too expensive (would be fine sometimes, but not as the base of her diet), I think she's allergic to turkey, I'm scared of raw pork, and I can't find a supplier besides the grocery store, so my choices are basically chicken and beef, and even though she actually consumes the bones in short ribs most of the time, she doesn't always, so I don't think I could base her diet on them. Are there other consumable beef bones, or anything else that I'm not thinking of?

And thanks for the suggestion Hollysmom. I will buy that booklet.

    Here's my issue...

If they are breeders, are they feeding Innova Evo to their pups? If so, Innova Evo is not a good food for large breed pups.

Really??? Shoot... I intended to feed this to my GSD pup next summer..... It's not good for puppies??

     It has too much calcium for puppies;

If you were feeding any food but EVO, I would tell you to simply use the kibble as what appears to be about half the diet, then balance out the other half as though you were feeding all raw -- in other words, no more than 40-50% raw meaty bones (such as chicken wings, canned fish or the vermont raw mix), with the rest being eggs, muscle meat, organ meat (around 10%), dairy, etc. In this case, you would probably be OK, although I would prefer to see some muscle meat (including heart) and organ meat (including liver) in the diet, but since you're feeding half kibble, it's not quite as important. I'd also prefer to see more variety, not just chicken.

Unfortunately, EVO is already too high in calcium for puppies, so you really can't add RMBs to it unless you decrease the amount of kibble and replace it with the RMBs. If you want to feed EVO, then the other half of the diet should not include bones.

    Ok.
So no EVO for my not wet born pup....
What should I give him then??? Innova puppy?? It has grains in it I think....
I liked EVO because it didn't contain any...
    • Gold Top Dog
Most foods have grains. The higher protein ones do not, but you should wait until your GSD is at least 18+ months old.

If you want grain free though for sure..Timberwolf Organics Ocean Blue is grain free. It has salmon/potatoes with the correct calcium/phosphorus and protein levels for a puppy. Otherwise, Innova Large Breed Puppy would be a great choice, but it does have grains.

Ok. So help me out please. English is my second language.

EVO is ok has long as you feed him 1/2 cup and the rest being RMB ( wich are???) ???

So wich food is better then??
    • Gold Top Dog
RMBs stand for raw meaty bones.

I wouldn't feed Evo of any kind to my GSD pup.

I would take Twin's suggestion and go with Timberwolf's Ocean Blue to start out.
But that's ONLY what I'd do.

    Ok!!!
Timberwolf ocean blue is fish I guess right?
    What about TW Elk?
