Someone needs a chill pill.  You'd be more persuasive if you weren't so harsh.  Yelling -- and that's what it looks like to me -- your point to people will have no effect, except for them tuning you out and not respecting your opinion.

I agree with Roxie.  How dare you be so rude!

I have read many of these articles in the past and don't have time to read them again, but I guess I will cheat and ask if these are recent articles or not?

In an article that I had saved from Dr. Randy Wysong:

    Road Kill and Euthanized Pets
This shift to "human grade" for pet foods is partly due to a variety of myths that have gotten much stronger legs than they deserve. Lore has spread in the marketplace that road kill and euthanized pets are used in pet foods. I have never seen the proof for this outrageous claim and after twenty years surveying ingredient suppliers I have never found a supplier of such. However, fantastic myths easily get life and the more fantastic they are the more life they have. It's the intellectually lazy way and what lies at the root of so much misery. Sloppy superficial thinking is what leads to racism, sexism, religious persecution and wars. People would like to think the world is sharply divided into right-wrong, good-evil, black-white. Marketers capitalize on this by trying to create such sharp distinctions for consumers to easily grab on to: human grade = good/all others = evil organic = right/all others = wrong rice = white/corn and wheat = black. Such simplistic and naïve distinctions are quick and simple for advertisers and salespeople to use to sway public opinion. But nobody stepping back and using common sense would ever think that something as complex as health could ever come from what is or is not in a processed bag of food. Reality is not black or white it is in shades of gray. Grayness requires some knowledge, judgment and discernment before making choices. It's a little more work but is what we all must do if the world is ever to be a better place and people and pet health are to improve.

Being passionate about the subject matter doesn't require delivering one's message in a harsh or rude manner.  And I agree with Roxie and Dyan....you catch more flies with honey..........

The people who come here asking about these lower end "trash" foods, don't know any better or they wouldn't be feeding this stuff.  I have to believe that anyone who seeks out a dog forum specifically and asks questions about food is here because they CARE and want to do better.  I don't really think we need to beat them up for wanting to gain knowledge and do better.  Heck it wasn't all THAT long ago that my vet told me Purina Large Breed Puppy for my gsds and I went out and bought exactly what she told me to feed.  I didn't KNOW better until this forum.  And honestly?  If I'd gotten the treatment that some of these folks get when they ask questions, I would have run for the hills.  I would have that folks here were a bunch of fanatics who used scare tactics to push their own agenda's.  Thankfully for me, and my dogs, there were some GOOD and patient people here who explained things to me without all the gory details.....

A few years ago, the FDA found pentobarbital in dog foodhttp://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/dfchart.htm I haven't seen any more recent information information on this though.

I rememeber that Sooner, it was even on our local news for a few days. I remember searching frantically thru the list of dog food that had it in, at the time I did not feed Eagle Pack.  Interesting that I believe as I look thru this list of dog food none of Purina had it in.  But I went searching on the Internet for some recent information..and came across this:
Dogs, cats not found in dog food
Because pentobarbital is used to euthanize dogs and cats at animal shelters, finding pentobarbital in rendered feed ingredients could suggest that the pets were rendered and used in pet food.
CVM scientists, as part of their investigation, developed a test to detect dog and cat DNA in the protein of the dog food.  All samples from the most recent dog food survey (2000) that tested positive for pentobarbital, as well as a subset of samples that tested negative, were examined for the presence of remains derived from dogs or cats.  The results demonstrated a complete absence of material that would have been derived from euthanized dogs or cats.  The sensitivity of this method is 0.005% on a weight/weight basis; that is, the method can detect a minimum of 5 pounds of rendered remains in 50 tons of finished feed.  Presently, it is assumed that the pentobarbital residues are entering pet foods from euthanized, rendered cattle or even horses.
The whole link that it came from a montly CVM newsletter.  [linkhttp://www.critterchat.net/pentobarbital.htm]http://www.critterchat.net/pentobarbital.htm[/link]

It's disgusting, whether it's coming from cattle or cats.

My SO does some work for Oklahoma State University. Sometimes his work involves the equipment at the vet school. He happened to be there on dead animal disposal day once. They were loading trucks with remains they had been keeping in freezers. There were all kinds of animals, big and small. They were all put into the same trucks going to the same place. But I don't know where they were going...

Yep, it sure is.  For some reason though, it seems worse that its someones pet.
I hate when people just drop off their pets to be euthanized at the vet and don't pay for a cremation for them. Would be nice if we could all bring our pets home for a nice burial in the back yard...sure isn't always possible.

I started the same "euthanized pet and roadkill" discussion with an Eagle Pack rep, and while he said those type of rumors will certainly turn people away from product that contain "meat by product," it is not true. It is now illegal to use roadkill and euthanized pets in dog and cat food.

That is totally false.  It IS legal to use euthanized cats and dogs and the California Veterinary Association has come right out and admitted that it sends most of its euthanized pets directly to rendering plants.

Some dog food rep? This was an Eagle Pack dog food rep. The rumors of euthanized pets and roadkill in meat by product would only help Eagle Pack.

I wouldn't have believed "what some bloody dog food company rep tells" me if it was say Nestle Purina, which has sent out letters also stating that meat by product is no longer made of road kill and euthanized pets, or Mars Co who makes Pedigree, or Heinz co. who makes Kibbles and Bits.

That's so true!  When I came here, I wasn't feeding Roxie a good food.  However, there were people that helped educate me and others on what is considered to be a good food.  If everyone would have been rude and harsh about it, I probably would have joined Glenda in running for the hills.  LOL!

I just read the ingredients for that new Kibbles n Bits off their web site.

INGREDIENTS: corn, soybean meal, ground wheat flour, beef and bone meal, animal fat (bha used as preservative), corn syrup, wheat middlings, animal digest (source of roasted chicken flavor), water sufficient for processing, propylene glycol, salt, hydrochloric acid, wheat gluten, caramel color, sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium chloride, vegetable blend (peas, carrots and green beans), sorbic acid (used as a preservative), titanium dioxide, sodium bisulfate, sodium carbonate, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), vitamins (vitamin e supplement, vitamin a supplement, niacin supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin d3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin b12 supplement), choline chloride, calcium sulfate, red 40, yellow 5, BHA (used as a preservative), blue 1, dl methionine, yellow 6.

Euthanized pets aside, those two ingredients are kind of, troubling.  Of what value is eating hydrochloric acid day after day?  Creepy.
    • Gold Top Dog
Well YUCK!!! Went surfing for info on those two ingredients. The hydorchloric acid sounds okay,,,but can't see the propylene glycol as something I want to eat,,,they put it in anti-freeze!! Here is what I found:

    Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
An inorganic acidic compound, excreted by the stomach, that aids in digestion.
    From:   [linkhttp://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C42561.html#G613]http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C42561.html#G613[/link]
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified propylene glycol as an additive that is “generally recognized as safe” for use in food. It is used to absorb extra water and maintain moisture in certain medicines, cosmetics, or food products. It is a solvent for food colours and flavours.

You need to seriously start being nicer when you post. I have no authority around here or anything, but you come across VERY nasty. I, for one, would NOT take your advice on any kind of food. This is like the 3rd or 4th time you have posted in a condescending manner and it's quite ugly. JMO.

We sell it, at the health food store. Eating dead food, day after day, tends to lead to stomach issues, like improper bacterial balances, not producing enough acid, and not having enough enzymes to break down the food. Not producing enough acid makes the food sit in the stomach for too long, and you get ulcers, or acid reflux (when you try to make up for the insufficiency, and overproduce). Taking HCl can remedy that.
