The Noble Quest for Kinder and Gentler "Nutrition" Postings

I honestly think that the people that tend to not like Eagle, do so because of corn.

Dyan i dont particualrly like Eagle because of all the grains, and it does smell like a bag of grain when you open it.As you know we have only got a few decent brands of kibbles here, eagle and nutro-scoff- are 2 of them. These are the only 2 my dogs point blank refused no matter how long they starved for,the 2 things they had in common were that they are grain heavy and smell grainy. If i were to look at the ingredients of all the super premium foods, but didnt see the product names i would say eagle would be a low to medium grade kibble, because there are so many foods who's ingredients far surpass it,ofcourse i'm talking on paper.Keep in mind i would call kibblnbits bottom of the barrel foods,i wouldnt go so far as to call it low.So thats my reason for not feeding eagle.

Dyan can i ask you serious question, and i really hope this doesnt come off as smart arsishness, but if the great dane lady said "dont feed eagle anymore, feed brand X" would you change? What if it was a food you really didnt like, would it matter as long as she recommended it?

I give Tony and Dyan grief over Eagle Pack and corn but it is a quality food.  I just wish it didn't insist on putting chicken in every formula!

Christine, I was answering Randoms statement when he said:
EP seems to be a strange food...some people recommend it above all others, while other people say that it isn't that great.  when I said I think it is because of the corn.  I say that because that is the ultimate conversation about Eagle.
I'm not entirely sure what you are talking about when you say that when you open a bag of Eagle is smells like grain...because I'm not sure what grain smells like, and to add to that confusion is that they put different ingredients in different formulas, try opening a bag of Eagle Holistic Select Anchovy Sardine and Salmon Meal. Eagle Pack is meat based food, and they use the meat meals rather than real meat which is up to 70% more water.   Their holistic formulas contain antibiotic free chicken and duck, no added hormones, free range sheep for their lamb formulas, their grains are herbicide free,  they use tons of fruits and veggies and supplements such as probiotics, prebiotics, Glucosamine, antioxidants, etc etc etc.  and I can go on and on...plus they are a smallish company and they make their own food. So if you want to call that low to medium grade food, then I guess I can't help you.  Because I'll tell you what, I have a whole drawer full of brochures on dog food,,,and I don't see a whole lot better ingredients in any of the others.
To answer your next question Christine,    but if the great dane lady said "dont feed eagle anymore, feed brand X" would you change?       The Great Dane Lady has a list of about 20 dog food companies that she recommends. I have chosen the one that was trial tested on my breed for several years, none of the others has been. If she found over all these tests that another brand worked better, of course I would change. She raises and studies Great Danes, what better teacher can you learn from???    What if it was a food you really didnt like, would it matter as long as she recommended it? Well, this is a stupid question, not worth answering. It seems to me by this question that you are going someplace that you should not be going to.

No chicken in Holistic Duck Meal & Oatmeal formula or Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon formula or Holistic Lamb Rice and Oatmeal.
Or do you mean chicken fat?

ozzie72 ,  Here are a few links about feeding Eagle to large breeds:
Note what this one says on the bottom of the page.

I rotate Jessie between the Holistic Duck, Fish, and Lamb formulas. She's allergic to chicken. All three formulas are 40% meat meal, and Jessie does great on them. I also use their canned formulas, and the first ingredient in all of them is meat, which isn't the case with a lot of canned foods such as Nutro. Eagle's canned formulas are 67 to 75% meat, depending on the formula.

Chicken of any type, including chicken fat.   The Anchovy, etc. formula would be safe.

Oh God...I've been eating Twinkies and Spam all this time...

yeah your right, and its the only one too, I read the whole pamphlet!
HHHmmm!

According to John Marsman from Eagle Pack, the chicken fat they use is purified and in the refined form is very unlikely to cause food allergies. I have also read that on other websites.

Christine, if you dislike the ingredients in Eagle so much, then why did you try so hard to get your dogs to eat it?  I remember how anxiously you awaited it being available in your country (knowing the ingredients) and how disappointed you appeared to be when your dogs wouldn't eat it.

So thats my reason for not feeding eagle.

It sounds to me that the reason you don't feed it is because your dogs won't eat it.

Jeez Billy the above comment along with a few others is starting to remind me of Isabel [:'(]

Do you have something to contribute, Christine, or just doing a drive-by?  [:D]

Whats going on?? Your first post is the exact opposite of what you would have thought on the 'other' forum.

If you read the ENTIRE thread, you will see "what's going on."  I haven't changed my opinion.  I am merely acknowledging that ALL we have on this subject is JUST an opinion.  We have no real science to back that opinion up, that I am aware of.  If you are aware of a peer reviewed, scientific study that proves one dog food is "better" than another, please make us aware of it.

When we talk about Eagle Pack formulas, we have to distinguish between their regular original dry food and their holistic ones, such as their Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken, Lamb, or Duck. They don't seem to have more grain in them than other premium foods such as  Innova, Canidae, Pinnacle, etc.

I actually tried Eagle Pak since I was given a FREE bag (likely because I tend to influence a lot of future doggie diets) and the thing I mostly noticed was that it didn't HAVE a smell...of any kind.

He reacts so quickly to any poultry that I just don't want to take the chance, esp. when there are alternatives like Cal Nat and SG without  poultry.

I can see your point John. I can't get Solid Gold or California Natural without ordering them, but our local feed store carries some good brands like Innova, Canidae, and Eagle. So far she does well on the Holistic Duck even though she's allergic to chicken.
