From what I understand, you should supplement 100 IU's of Vitamin E per 25lbs.

How many IU's are in one Vitamin E capsule? So, they would need this every single day along with the Salmon Oil? There is also Vitamin E in their kibble...so why do they need so much more Vitamin E?

Also, why wouldn't TWO tell you that you need to supplement with Vitamin E? There is Vitamin E in their Salmon Oil.

I am sooooooooooooo confused. [:(]

Does anyone have a website that explains this to people that are completely clueless? I really want to order the Wild Salmon Oil, but I want to make sure I am doing this right. [&o]

How many IU's are in one Vitamin E capsule? Depends on the capsule. It'll tell you on the bottle. Get the natural stuff, not the synthetic. The synthetic is only about 50% absorbable.

So, they would need this every single day along with the Salmon Oil? Yes. Omega fatty acids oxidize very rapidly in the body. The body will use its supply of E fighting this, so you need to supplement to body to prevent a deficiency.

There is also Vitamin E in their kibble...so why do they need so much more Vitamin E?
The vitamin E in kibble is a preservative. It isn't enough to equal the supplementation amount.

Also, why wouldn't TWO tell you that you need to supplement with Vitamin E? No manufacturer says that, as far as I know. Seapet makes a fish oil with the proper amount of E added per serving. I think they are the only one.

There is Vitamin E in their Salmon Oil. It's just in there as a preservative. Someone on another board figured out you'd need to give a 25lb dog 33 tsp of TO's oil to get the proper amount of E.

I am sooooooooooooo confused.   It's not that bad, really.

Does anyone have a website that explains this to people that are completely clueless? Not that I know of, but i hope this post helps.

I really want to order the Wild Salmon Oil, but I want to make sure I am doing this right.   It's really pretty easy, give the manufacturer recommended amount of salmon oil and supplement with 100iu/25lbs of natural vitamin E. If you can't find a pill in the right amount they also have liquid versions.

Well, that makes it easier to understand.  I don't even give an alternative fish oil supplement, though I wanted to do so.  Then, I read about adding Vitamin E and all that good jazz.  I'm learning more and more about this stuff.

Thanks, Kelly!

THANK YOU SOONER!!! [:D] Looks as if I am starting to understand this confusion! [;)]

This is the only thing that concerns me. Why does the body fight the omega's...and for those that don't supplement with Vitamin E, their dogs are getting a deficiency? This doesn't sound very good, at all. Is there any way to over supplement Vitamin E? It just seems like so much, when if we don't give Salmon Oil, we don't need to give Vitamin E. It's OK to give every single day of their life?

Do they need the Salmon Oil with every meal? Or, can it be like twice a week? If so, would we only need to give Vitamin E those days that we give the Salmon Oil?

Sorry if I seem completely retarded about this...thankfully I have you guys to help me! [:)]

Why does the body fight the omega's...It doesn't really *fight* them, it fights the natural oxidizing process that occurs. I don't know why they oxidize so rapidly though.

and for those that don't supplement with Vitamin E, their dogs are getting a deficiency? They can.

Is there any way to over supplement Vitamin E? It's virtually impossible to reach a *toxic* dose of E, but you can have adverse reactions with really high doses (1000 iu +). I stick with the recommended amount, even going to the low side if, for instance, you find 200 iu pills and 400 iu pills for a sixty lb dog, I'd go with the 200 iu..

It just seems like so much, when if we don't give Salmon Oil, we don't need to give Vitamin E. It's OK to give every single day of their life? A lot of people do. It isn't critical, like, it's not going to cause a major problem if you don't supplement with E when giving fish oil, it's just better to do it.

Do they need the Salmon Oil with every meal? Or, can it be like twice a week? Either way. It's perfectly fine to give every day. Salmon oil is the one *best* overall supplement.

If so, would we only need to give Vitamin E those days that we give the Salmon Oil? That's the way I understand it. Some people supplement with E by itself, but I don't.

Roxie is 60 pounds, so I'd give her a 200 IU Vitamin E pill?  Would the ones at Wal-Mart be okay?
• Gold Top Dog
200 is fine. The ones at Wal-Mart are okay, as long as they are natural. This articel explains how to identify productshttp://altmedangel.com/vite.htm

Oh, okay!  Thanks a ton, Kelly!

The Salmon to avoid is the PACIFIC NORTHWEST variety.  That is the one that has the fluke that can be fatal to dogs.

How much Salmon oil to use - here's what I go by:

1000 mgs per 30 pounds of body weight for a healthy dog
1000 mgs per 20 pounds of body weight for a dog in recovery
1000 mgs per 10 pounds of body weight for a dog with a chronic illness

I give my 14.5 yr old girl Neke, who has arthritis, Spondylosis, DM and cancer about 3 teaspoons per day.  That's roughly 12,000 mgs of oil.

I use TO oil when they have it in stock.  Buy it by the gallon, fill a smaller pump bottle and keep the leftovers in the freezer.

It's great for coat, skin, eyes.  It helps with arthritis.  It's the Omega 3s that are missing from most diets - even the high quality kibble ones.

I've never really liked the oil in capsule form. I just feed fresh salmon about twice a week and that works fine. I just like it because it's easyer to feed then forcing a capsule down the dogs throught

I prick the capsule and squeeze the oil on Jessie's food. Twin, you have to provide vitamin E with natural salmon oil or the dog's body won't be able to process it and get the benefits from the omega 3's. There are some good fish oil supplements that have vitamin E and other antioxidants;  I use DermCare for large breeds and it has 360mg of EPA, 240mg of DHA, and includes vitamins A, D3, and E.

I use it. My dogs love it. You're supposed to give them ONE TEASPOON per 40 lbs of weight. I give them salmon oil in the morning and organic flaxseed oil or olive oil at night. I was giving them fish oil caps but this is so much better. I bought  the 32 oz bottle which has 200 one tsp servings.  Note : this has to be refridgerated once opened.

The main difference is that TO is pharmaceutical grade... Grizzly is not.  Pharmaceutical grade is the purest form you can get. The others still have traces of PCBs and other impurities. Fish oil caps are the worst form and the most impure having  a much higher concentration of pcbs and other toxins which have not been filtered out.

Note....on dogs swallowing fish oil caps ....You're supposed to puncture it and squeeze it onto their food !

I didn't know about supplementing w/vitamin E either.  Sheesh...they are already taking so many things. I would think just a good multivitamin would be sufficient.

Swallow? Puncture?

My dogs thought you were supposed to chew them, like gum!
