Wild Salmon Oil - T.O.

I have fed Ella a high quality kibble since we got her. We ALSO given her fish oil/vitamin E capsules since we got her. Ella had heartworm when the shelter got her. It was new enough that they caught it and were able to get rid of it, but it left her with a heart murmur.
The vet said that the extra fish oil is GREAT for her. She said it will help keep her heart pumping nicely by keeping everything clear.
So, my answer to you guys is, unless someone comes on here and says too much fish oil has been proven BAD for dogs, add extra to your dogs' diets. As far as I know, it will only help, not hurt.

Omega RX and TO are the only ones I know of for sure. Iceland Pure MAY be one but there is nothing on their site that definitely states that it is Pharmaceutical grade.Even Nature's Logic isn't URPG oil.

    Iceland Pure says

During the bottling process in Iceland, our salmon oil goes through a detoxification process that removes virtually all toxins and heavy metals - to the point where they are below detectable levels so that the oil can be called "toxin-free." The lab in Iceland uses a proprietary natural process to achieve these results and, subject to regulations of the European Good Manufacturing Practice and Pharmaceutical Production Commission and ISO 9002 (a European standards code), samples of its oils are tested frequently for toxicity levels by licensed third-party testing companies.

Does that mean it's a pharmaceutical product?

If I get the Timberwolf Organics Wild Salmon Oil...how often and how much do I give...twice a day with each meal, once a day, once a week, twice a week...one pump, two pumps??? I have no idea. [8|]

Which is better...Canned Salmon OR Salmon Oil?

If you feed fish, do you need fish oil?

    THANKS!! [:)]

I don't think ISO 9002 compliance necessarily consitutes pharmaceutical grade status. I know the other thing doesn't really mean that. It's still impressive however - those are VERY strict standards. Basically they mean that they have to turn in a plan for safety and quality control and then prove regularly that they are meeting those standards and following that plan. ISO 9002 requires at least one employee, usually a whole team of employees, dedicated to nothing but quality control.

Yeah, I was an internal auditor for a company I worked for that was 9002 certified. It's a fabulous system of checks and balances - if you aren't the one actually having to nitpick everything [:'(]

I have posted this before, but I am not aware of any evidence of dogs (or people) getting sick from wild Alaska salmon.  I have never heard the advice to freeze the fish before.  I live in Alaska, so wild salmon is pretty available, and it's common here for people to feed it to their dogs.  (I do -- in fact my lucky dog got a delicious helping of salmon skin and scraps after I made salmon for dinner last night.)  I've never heard of problems.  Does anyone have a source for that information?

Of course, for people who don't live or fish in Alaska, it's unlikely to be economically viable to feed your dogs wild Alaska salmon since it is so expensive.  I wouldn't recommend farmed fish (for people or for dogs).

The cheap canned salmon I get at Aldi claims to be wild-caught Alaskan. It is cooked, of course, but I feed fish for benefits that don't change with cooking (OFAs, minerals, and lean protein). I've never questioned its safety and it's been in my dogs' diet (and ours!) for years now.

Alaskan oil should be fine - the "thing" with salmon is a parasite, right? I think it is a liver fluke, although I might be confused on that point. Too lazy to google (isn't that awful? - but I just wormed sheep and I'm stinky and my bath is about ready).

    ORIGINAL: willowchow

I just wanted to add that most dogs are going to take a fish oil capsule very easily. Willow loves them and she's a very fussy dog.

Thank you so much for posting this!  All this time I've been poking a hole in the capsules and squeezing out the oil onto Ace's food.  This is what my vet said to do.  It's not too much of a big deal, but my hands tend to get a bit oily and smell like fish, and I know he's not getting 100% of the supplement since you can't squeeze it all out.  So after I read your post last night I just put the whole capsule in with his kibble and he ate it right down!  I can't believe I never even tried that before.  Thanks for the tip.

sorry if i've missed this, but where or what brand has the capsul?  My tzu's and their beards carry the slight order of fish and am hoping the capsul will give the benefits without the 'leftovers'

I get my fish oil/vitamin E capsules from Petco.
I believe the brand is "PetGold"

And just to let you know, we've been giving her these supplements for a little over a month and her coat is FANTASTIC.

In regards to how much TWO Wild Salmon Oil to give, their website states:

"We recommend feeding 1 - 2 teaspoons per 100 gms (3.5 oz) of food."

Can someone translate this amount into cups? I have no idea what grams/ounces equal in cup size. [8|]

Should this amount be given with both feedings everyday?

Also, can cats get the oil also?

The bags of TWO say that a cup is about 150 grams, so 100 is 2/3 of a cup. But oddly, I just got some of their salmon oil today, and the bottle says 1 teaspoon per 40 pounds of body weight. 1-2 tsp per 2/3 cup of food seems excessive to me. [&:]

The bottle says "Supplement for dogs & cats".

    Thank you Chelsea! [:)]

Do you know how often to give the Salmon Oil?
    • Gold Top Dog
I usually give some in every feeding. I can't imagine there's anything wrong with that, but I don't know if it's necessary.

Chelsea, do you supplement with Vitamin E in addition to the Wild Salmon Oil? If so, how much?
