I do know that TO's salmon oil is pharmaceutical grade and is made from one of the best sources of salmon there is : Wild Icelandic or Greenland salmon which has a particularly high fatty acid ratio. Grizzly on the other hand is wild ALASKAN salmon oil and is obviously NOT pharmaceutical grade. There is no mention at all on their site about distillation or ultra-refined processing. In fact their description is quite vague.
I've done some research and found that there are 3 grades of fish oil. The lowest quality is Cod Liver Oil. it contains the highest levels of contaminants and a low concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids. Then there is what is called HEALTH FOOD GRADE fish oil.... Grizzly falls under this category. It has less contaminants but still a fairly high level of pollutants. Health food grade oils are fish body oils extracted from the fish. Then there are ULTRA-REFINED Fish Oils. They contain long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids that are exceptionally low in pollutants like PCBs and oxidized and polymerized lipids. The purity of this oil is shown not only in it's dramatically improved taste, but also in it's costly price.. nearly twice as much as food grade oils. These are the only oils which allow the daily intake of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids needed to alter eicosanoid synthesis without gastric distress or fear of accumulation of environmental pollutants.
* I just wanted to add... those of you out there feeding your dogs fish oil / salmon oil capsules are feeding FOOD GRADE fish oil so it is recommended that you NOT feed large quantities of it because of the PCBs and other toxins which haven't been removed during processing. Also it's definitely NOT wise to use any fish oil that comes from farm-raised fish. They have an extremely high concentration of PCBs , toxic metals, antibiotics and other pollutants .
Ultra Refined oil only comes in liquid /bottle form. But that DOES NOT mean that all fish oil in liquid / bottle form is Ultra Refined Pharmaceutical Grade... Grizzly is an example of just that. If the oil is indeed Pharmaceutical Grade it will state so.
