Wild Salmon Oil - T.O.

Has something changed that I haven't heard?

No; I don't think everyone knows you're supposed to freeze it first.

I've never really liked the oil in capsule form. I just feed fresh salmon about twice a week and that works fine. I just like it because it's easyer to feed then forcing a capsule down the dogs throught. I do prefer wild caught over anything else but for me it just depends on what's in the stoes at the time.

    You don't want to feed farm-raised salmon too often because they have high levels of pcb's and other toxins;

I take some canned dog food, put the fish oil capsule in it, and roll it into a meatball; works great.

I always poke a hole in the capsules and squeeze the oil into Cherokee's food. Messy sometimes, but it works. I'm totally buying Grizzly or some other brand that has a pump when I'm done with these capsules though. That'll be so much easier.

Oh, and I give Cherokee 3 or 4 grams of salmon oil every day.

so it is ok to feed raw salmon to dogs? what about other kinds fish?

No raw salmon. There is some sort of parasite that they can get from raw salmon. My dogs do get other fish raw, but never salmon.

I add grizzly salmon oil to all the  7 dogs feed.  Even the 15 year old who is on Purina N/F and Ekapatkin to remove the phosphorous from her body.

It has helped the arthritic dogs more than the msm and gluscosimine.  Also, it is in Chicken Soup senior which four of the senior dogs eat, and the 4 year olds eat the adult version.   All are rescues, one is no longer walking she has a cart, and one had successful back surgery  6 years ago, no more aches from arthritis, their coats shine.

I do know that TO's salmon oil is pharmaceutical grade and is made from one of the best sources of salmon there is : Wild Icelandic or Greenland salmon which has a particularly high fatty acid ratio.   Grizzly on the other hand is wild ALASKAN salmon oil and is obviously  NOT pharmaceutical grade. There is no mention at all on their site about distillation or ultra-refined processing. In fact their description is quite vague.

I've done some research and found that there are 3 grades of fish oil.  The lowest quality is Cod Liver Oil. it contains the highest levels of contaminants and a low concentration of Omega 3 fatty acids. Then there is what is called HEALTH FOOD GRADE fish oil.... Grizzly falls under this category. It has less contaminants  but still a fairly high level of pollutants. Health food grade oils are fish body oils extracted from the fish.  Then there are ULTRA-REFINED Fish Oils.  They contain long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids that are exceptionally low in pollutants like PCBs and oxidized and polymerized lipids.  The purity of this oil is shown not only in it's dramatically improved taste, but also in it's costly price.. nearly twice as much as food grade oils. These are the only oils which allow the daily intake of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids needed to alter eicosanoid synthesis without gastric distress or fear of accumulation of environmental pollutants.

    * I just wanted to add... those of you out there feeding your dogs fish oil / salmon oil capsules are feeding FOOD GRADE fish oil so it is recommended that you NOT feed large quantities of it because of the PCBs and other toxins which haven't been removed during processing. Also it's definitely NOT wise to use any fish oil that comes from farm-raised fish. They have an extremely high concentration of PCBs , toxic metals, antibiotics and other pollutants .

Ultra Refined oil only comes in liquid /bottle form. But that DOES NOT mean that all fish oil in liquid / bottle form is Ultra Refined Pharmaceutical Grade... Grizzly is an example of just that.  If  the oil is indeed Pharmaceutical Grade it will state so.

Very interesting! Do you know any brands of the ultra refined fish oils?

Omega RX and TO are the only ones I know of for sure. Iceland Pure MAY be one but there is nothing on their site that definitely states that it is Pharmaceutical grade.Even Nature's Logic isn't  URPG oil.

Does the Salmon Oil make a drastic improvement in the dogs coat?

See this is my question too. . .  . I know it makes a HUGE difference in a dogs coat if you are feeding lower quality kibble, but what about if you  are already feeding a premium food with all your omegas and such, does the addition of the salmon oil make much difference?
I would consider adding some in but I just switched to Timberwolf Bison and ELK so I wonder if it makes a difference adding in their oil if you are already feeding their food??

    Anyone have experience with this??

Are all of you supplementing Vitamin E too with this fish oil?  Don't you have to?

These are exactly the questions I am looking at hearing answers to. Since we are both switching to TWO...I was also wondering if the we needed to suppplement with their Wild Salmon oil...since it is already in their food?! Another reason why it's great we are going through this at the same time. [:)]

Exactly!! [:D]  I am hoping to find someone who fed something like TWO for a bit and then added the oil in after a month or two on the new kibble and THEN decided to add in the salmon oil. . . would there be any significant change??

Someone tried to sell me some omegas for my pups the other day and they were NOT getting the fact that their food already contains plenty of balanced omega oils so to add in more would not really benifit them the same way it would if tehy were on a lower quality food.
