Tossing out kibble

I'd never throw the food out, unless it was quite obviously moldy or something like that. It takes Cassidy 2 months to go through a 50 lb bag of food. I buy one every other month, and I've always gotten that size. I roll the top down to keep it sorta sealed ( to keep the puppy from getting into it, mostly!), and it seems to last fine.

If you're really worried about it, put half of the food in a ziploc bag, and put it in the freezer. I have a 4 lb bag of Barking At The Moon, that I use for training treats (that's all I use it for, and only occasionally). It's perfectly happy living in the freezer.

Jennie, do you know if freezing affects foods that have probiotics in them? I bought about a year's worth of dog food at a super cheap price, and it contains beneficial bacteria. I was going to cram it al in the fridge and freezer to keep it fresh longer but I'm afraid it will hurt the bacteria. Any ideas? Thanks!

I honestly don't think that probiotics in dog food are very beneficial. Heat kills probiotics. Freezing it is fine, either way. Probiotics do just fine (as do enzymes) with normal freezers.

    This is what I did.
I had to buy Ella a 16.5 lbs. bag of T.O. but didn't have a container that big to store it in.
So...I put 4lbs or so into a tupperware container and rolled the rest up in the bag and put one of those heavy duty paperclip things on it.
I keep it in the cabinet with the door shut.
She gets kibble so rarely that I've had that bag since...I think the beginning of September and she still as almost half a bag of food. But it's nice to keep on hand because I find that I forget to pull food out of the freezer for her occasionally and I don't like feeding her fish 2 days in a row[:D]

Solid Gold is only good for 3 months once you open the bag, according to them anyways.  Nature's Variety used to claim that the freeze dried meat in the food would loose it's raw enzyms after 3 months, but they don't put as much freeze dried meat into the food as they used to.

I think your fine as long as you store the food in a seal tight container somewhere dark.

I have noticed that my dog prefers the fresh bag newly opened versus the food that has been stored in the air tight container for a few weeks.  I only buy the smallest sized bags for that reason.  He basically can eat that in two weeks.  They are 8lbs each.  I know if you are ordering your food that isn't alway possible.  And its more expensive in some cases also.  I am blessed with coupons!

My company distributes Nestle Purina. I send my dad Pro Plan coupons all the time. He's so cheap. He is a millionare (really he is), but if I don't send him coupons, he'll put his Australian cattledog on regular dog chow again.

    Hi Jojo
I am a product demonstrator for Nestle Purina.  Been with them 8 years.   What do you feed your dog?  I am using Proplan and One Senior for Jax.  He is 9 1/2 now and looks like a 4 year old dog to me.  He is so spry for his age.  I think it was just a combination of luck and decent breeding.  Although his mom and dad are brother and sister!  First generation inbreed, but our vet told us its fine and done all the time.

Susan i may have you mixed up with someone else, but havnt you had major health issues with your dog now and in the past?

One of my chihuahuas, Madison, eats Timberwolf Organics as well, and it takes us about a month to go through a 4lb bag.

I'm thinking I'm going to develop a breed of 4 pound Border collies to work my sheep.  Of course, it would be just my luck they'd still have massive metabolisms and eat 2 cups of EVO a day. [8|]

Hi Edie yes that is me.  Jax had no heath issues for 7 years and went in to have a fatty cyst removed off his hip and had a reaction to something during or after surgery and he developed Zinc Responsive Dermatitis.  He was seriously ill.  He was diagnosed after a long battle and many biopsies and is doing great today.  He lives on Zinpro crushed into liver sausage every morning and without it his skin/cell structure will again deteriorate quickly.  He does have a stubborn nose crustation problem that will not respond to the treatment and we just keep that clean, debreeded and put vasoline on it daily.  But quality of life wise he is doing amazing.  Beyond what the specialist ever expected.  He is the good result of a bad disease.  Thanks for remember Jax and I.

Can you expand on that some? Or point me somewhere to read about it? I'm aware that some small levels of a mold are allowed in corn products, but I'm not aware of any other molds that could be present.

That's pretty much common sence. There is a souce somewhere in the internet but couldn't find it, the person who told me that was a vet that I met at my friend's house, a regular vet, after that someone also came up to me saying that kibbles have mold, but what can you expect from foods that has been sitting in a place for several days, then the food is bagged and then  wait in the market for someone to buy it?!?! They say it is not bad for the dogs. But still it is MOLD. I feed my dogs kibble, but I am planning to switch to something else, like raw food, at least I know what I am feeding them. But I am not saying that I am against it, off course there are dogs that don't do well on raw, but  my dogs don't do well on kibble, allergies bad breath, tartar. That's what I got. There is a website talking about it, when I find it I'll let you guys know.
