Tossing out kibble

    Tossing out kibble

I need some advice folks.... I was told by a few other dog lovers that kibble only stays fresh for about a month after the package has been opened. I buy the smallest bag of Canidae and Timberwolf Organics available but Toby never finishes an entire bag within a month... Once the bag has been opened for a month, I toss it out and purchase a new bag....

Does anyone else out there do this?

    No, no, no....[sm=smack.gif]

I don't know where you heard that, but its absolute rubish! All your doing is losing money fast! The food, as long as its still in its original bag and is always kept closely shut after you scoop the kibble will be fine until the expiration date listed on the bag. Usually the bag is good for one year from the date it was bagged. So find the expiration date on the bag and the food is fine until then as long as you keep it closed up after use.

Please don't throw anymore bags out! [:(]

I feed Bubby about a bag (giant bag) of dog food a month,,,but I want to feed her two different formulas...so I have two bags going at a time....of course I don't throw them away after a month...the original bag keeps them fresh.

Willow decided over the past couple of months she wants a little crunch for breakfast. So, I got one of those vittle vault things and I kept the food in the bag and put the bag in that.  So, far no problems.

More companies are coming out with resealable bags also, which helps, tuff to do on a large bag I would  suppose, but it will be.

If you use (as Willow stated) a sealable plastic container to keep your bag of dog food in, it should be just fine to keep it until it's used up.

BTW, I think Toby is just the cutiest Lil Dude on idog!

What I've heard is that once you open a bag, you should store it in a food-safe plastic container or a metal container that is air-tight and it should be good for about two months. I'm sure it goes stale just as our own food does. The best way to go is store it in several small containers so that you aren't exposing the whole lot of food to air every day when you feed. I use those metal popcorn tins you always get around christmas time.

Max only eats about 1-1/2 - 2 cups a day, so when he was on the Kirkland lamb & rice a 40 lb. bag lasted a long time.  It always seemed fine, right to the end.  Now he's on the EP Holistic lamb & rice which comes in a 33 lb. bag.  He started the bag right after the the 4th. of July (around the 6th. or 7th.) and the bag is still about half full. I just roll the opened end down tight and it stays fine.

Thanks for the advice!~  I usually store Toby's food in its original container and then place it inside a huge tupperware container.....  I guess I should stop tossing out food... [&:]

If you put  food,in containers,ie. plastic, tin or whatever,I would leave it in the bag and place the lid on tight.
Some plastics can leech out into food products,if kept long enough.

I bought Lizzie a bag of food about a month ago and its still half full [&:] The kibble still looks good and it still stinks (its Lamb and Rice) but what I do is just roll the top of the bag tight.

I think I should buy a smaller bag next time [:)]

One of my chihuahuas, Madison, eats Timberwolf Organics as well, and it takes us about a month to go through a 4lb bag... so I've never thrown away any food.

Have you looked into buying a storage container?

Yah, I always keep the bag rolled up nice and tight and then place it in a air tight tupperware container.... The reason why I'm asking is that I was told that once the bag is opened, it doesn't matter how tight you roll up the bag.  The kibble has already been exposed to air and therefore won't keep fresh for more than a month of so.  Maybe the information is incorrect as there doesn't seem to be anyone that agrees with this.?

IMHO i think it's best to only buy enough food to last no more than a month, thats what i do. I also take a weeks worth of  food out of the bag and transfer it to a smaller container, after every week i wash out the smaller container thouroughly and start again. This way the original bag and bulk of the food is only exposed to air, light etc once a week instead of everyday if you feed straight out of the bag. I store the original bag in an airtight container.

I also buy the smallest bag of canidae and I keep it in a plastic container made for cereal that I got for a couple bucks at walmart. I love the container because it can hold the contents of the whole bag and its slim design fits nicely in the pantry. The food always stays fresh and the container has a pour spout which makes it easy to pour in her bowl. I used to measure her food but now I am pretty accurate in eyeballing the right amount.
