Sorry to add another RMB post. . . nervous!!!

OK, so after a lot of reading on this forum, I have decided to try my first RMB. I am NOT going to do chicken (haven't ruled it out as one of JJ's allergies).

I purchased beef back ribs today to try with my 2 greyhounds. The meat counters at my local markets don't have much in terms of choice and the soup bones had 1/2 inch thick fat all around them so my only option was these ribs.

These are allright to feed my guys right?? They are about 6 inches long.  Will they try to eat the bones too or just the meat, fat and marrow??
Anything I need to worry about with these types of bones or am I good to go??

Sorry for all the questions. . .just like the other posters I am nervous to try it the first time.[sm=biggrin.gif]

They may or may not try to eat the bone. If they do, it's fine. Teenie weighs in at a whopping 13 pounds, and eats beef ribs, with no problems.

I fed my Great Dane ONE beef back rib yesterday,,,,she COULDN'T eat the bone as hard as she tried. She pulled off all the meat,,,part of the top of the bone and crunched it up and ate it,,but spent a long time gnawing on the rib..and couldn't eat it... I was surprised...I thought a Dane would eat it in no time. I finally took it from her after about an hour,,she was making a mess of everything,,,getting her teeth bleeding and all.  But she has another rib left in the fridge,,thinking tomorrow would be a good time for it!

Well okay,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so Bubblegum has what seems to be a stomach made of iron!!  She eats everything,,,drools for everything...loves everything!!!
She ate her rib bone with pretty much meat on it...then we gave her much less kibble...can't really figure out how much she should have had since she had the bone rib first...   All was well!  I took her out and she had a normal BM at night,,,even though she normally only goes once a day and she had already gone.  So I was surprised when she went again this morning......but tonight after supper,,,she was acting weird,,,,so I took her out and she had a big pile of soft poop,,,and then kept squating and trying to go more,,,pushing liquid out,,,squirt by sqirt,,drop by drop.   She ate normal today,,,never thought there was a problem,,,.but now I have to think it was the bone.    Worst part is Ollie did the same sort of thing a couple of years ago....and had "the runs" for weeks.... I had given him a soup bone,,,but then I took him to a dog park that day also and caught him drinking out of a puddle...so not sure what made him sick.  But I'm pretty sure Bubby isn't feeling so swell.    If she goes again,,,I will open a can of pumpkin.

Dyan does bubby get bones on a regular basis?
    • Gold Top Dog
No,,,I give her a big raw marrow bone once in a while,,but its been a while. She does get raw chicken necks a lot,,,but they are small. This is the first bone she had that had quite a bit of meat on it.    I have one more in the fridge,,was going to give her tomorrow,,,guess I better not.

Maybe it's because she didn't eat the bone? If my dogs get meat with no calium/bone, they get diahrrea, too.

Dyan, I'm really thinking that it's because she isn't USED to raw meat.  This does sometimes happen.

The bigger top part of the bone must have been softer...she got that off and crunched it up and ate it...she could NOT chew up the big rib bones...they must have been very hard. They are pretty think and about an inch wide and about 6 or 7 inches long.
AND she ate kibble after,,,since I didn't feel that the what she ate on the bone compared to her kibble,,so we cut the kibble in half and fed her after her bone.
I'm sure she wasn't missing any nutrients.

No she is not used to raw meat, she is used to having lightly cooked meat on her kibble.  She is used to some raw bones though,,,and raw egg.

    That was my first thought.

A dog that only gets a bone/raw meat once in a while wont get a chance to get used to it. I think 3-4-5 times per week would help bubby adapt much easier. My dogs get rmb's everyday so their systems are well and truly used to raw meat and bones. Dyan what about a marrow or knuckle bone after dinner every night, her system will get the hang of it pretty quickly i would imagine.

    Dyan,
I am sorry to hear about Bubby's runs!  I plan to try the beef ribs tomorrow with my guys and I hope they don't have the same problem. . . maybe I should keep some pumpkin on hand  (never tried it before).

I am shocked that your dane didn't eat every bite of those bones! Maybe I won't have to really worry about the bone part then. I would like them to chew on it enough though to get their teeth clean. Although I have to say that I posted the other day about how JJ didn't like his bully stick and I was looking for other options to keep his teeth in good shape, and now that we brought home a female grey this weekend,  there is serious "bully" competition going on! In fact, we had to get more bully's just to keep everyone happy.  (see JJ actually eating a bully stick below!)

jj, good luck with your bones.

Edie,,,I think your right about its the meat.
I should not have fed her breakfast this morning,,,but gee,,,she is starved...galloping all over the house waiting for breakfast.  I did not give her a raw egg this morning,,,but replaced it with canned pumkin.   She didn't poop yet this morning,,,but she went a lot last night.   BUT I am home today, and she is with my be the computer....everytime she stretches,,, you hear her making BUTT NOISES.....if you know what I mean. Soon I will take her back out, and I have a feeling that I know what I'm up for!!!!
If this worked I was going to buy her a couple of bones a week...I really don't want to feed her raw,,just trying to do the bones for her teeth.  I thought the ones with meat would really help,,since she would be pulling the meat from the bones.   She does gnaw on soup bones...when I buy them but my store cuts them so small. They don't cut them there,,they get them in like that and I think they were previously frozen.   I need to find a butcher.

The marrow bones they sell in the store here are really small, too. They're about as long as a tennis ball.... I'd be afraid to let a big dog chew them, too! My friend gets them for her German Shepherds, and they do ok with them. Bubblegum is a big girl, though!
