Timberwolf Organics

FYI, Petfooddirect is now distributing Timberwolf Organics.

Only Natural Pet Store also distributes Timberwolf, unless you have a Pet Food Direct coupon code, ONPS is much cheaper on shipping. Also, they were very quick to answer my ingredient question and after our correspondence they added a note to their website about the discrepancy.

When I have time, I'm going to check into the cat food ingredients as well. There seems to be something weird going on there. On Timberwolf's site the cat food and the Wild & Natural are absolutely identical... odd for two species food to be the same. On ONPS's site the first  few ingredients are: Bison Meat, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract), Barley, Low Ash Salmon Meal, Potatoes… those ingredients don't seem quite right for a cat food either.

I have some Serengeti cat food and some Wild and Natural. They do look the same. They are the same shape, size and color. They even smell the same.

I don't have a way to scientifically analyze the two foods, but I could use Bailey to see which he prefers. Dogs usually like cat food better.

First of all it's NOT odd. There are many super premium foods that can be eaten by a cat or dog because they are totally MEAT / Carnivore based. This is one. If you  recall I explained this once before on the old board. Because the Wild and Natural and Seregenti  are something like 36 or 38 % protein that means they are mostly MEAT. They both contain Taurine and low ash.  Wild and Natural's description on the website begins with  .. ." We used our Serengeti Herbal formula as the base ...........".  The only difference is that the Wild and Natural contains fresh chicken in place of the brown rice as second ingredient , and the Serengeti does NOT.  The inclusion of Bison in the formula  is a misprint. I have had that confirmed and that was in the last post on the old forum.
What makes you think a cat could not eat those ingredients ?  The only difference between cat and dog foods is the amounts or inclusion of Taurine and ash.

    Solid Gold Katznflocken :

    Lamb/chicken meal / Millet/ brown rice/ menhaden fish meal / cracked pearl barley / canola oil / flaxseed oil / amaranth / blueberries / dried chicory root/ taurine / carotene /  .............

    Solid Gold Hundnflocken

Lamb/ lamb meal / millet / brown rice / crached pearled barley / oatmeal /rice bran / menhaden fish meal / canola oil / flax meal / amaranth / blueberries / dried chickory root / carotene /  ......... The only thing this formula doesn't contain is TAURINE  , otherwise  the cat formula and dog formula are essentially similar.

    Timberwolf Serengeti Felid
Chicken Meal / brown rice / chicken fat  ( Those are the MAIN ingredients. Anything that comes before the FAT constitutes the bulk of the ingredients ) , Barley/ Low Ash Salmon Meal / Potatoes/ Flax seed / sardine-mackeral-anchovy- tuna oils / Eggs, Dried Chicken Liver .... it also contains  Taurine and Lysine

    Timberwolf Wild n Natural
Chicken meal /  fresh chicken / Chicken fat / low ash salmon meal / potatoes / sardine-mackerel-anchovy-tuna oils / eggs, dried chicken liver .....Taurine and Lysine

These are both extremely high protein formulas. The DOG formula was created to emulate the CAT formula which was created FIRST,  because service/working dogs need more meat-based protein than other dogs, they are on a more carnivorous diet. These two foods also feed much less than any of the others because of all the meat protein

Neither formula contains BISON...that was the misprint. And even if it did... what makes you think Bison would be an inappropriate source of protein for a cat ? Cats can eat ANY source of animal protein.

EVO dog is fine for dogs and cats, as well.... I know quite a few people here were feeding it to the dogs, cats, and ferrets when it first came out.

I just haven't ever seen a dog and cat food be exactly identical, as they are listed on TO's site. ONPS's site has the different (not grain-free) ingredient list.

I'd just like to know what is actually in it.  But to find that out, someone at TO would have to answer my questions [sm=banghead002.gif]

That's because they are the same formula with only one or two noted differences.
    • Gold Top Dog
Azmira's dog and cat canned formula's appear that way also, with only slight differences. I don't think it's a big deal.

What are the differences? I'm not trying to be a pest here, really  [:D]  I just don't see any noted differences.

And, do you know which of the following is correct? We already know that what's in the bag may not have the ingredients printed on the bag... so do you know which formula they are shipping right now?

    ONPS
Bison Meat, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract), Barley, Low Ash Salmon Meal, Potatoes, Flax Seed, Sardine/Mackerel/Anchovy/Tuna Oils (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract) Eggs, Dried Chicken Liver,

I don't know if cats have the same reactions to ingredients as dogs, but if someone was under the impression that they were getting a grain free food and didn't - the animal could quite possibly have a bad reaction.

This is why I don't trust Timberwolf, you can't tell what you are getting. And if there are discrepancies in some of the formulas, there are likely problems with the others as well.
    • Gold Top Dog
the OLD formula had rice in it; the stuff they are making now does not have rice in it. The bison is a misprint. The stuff they are shipping now has the ingredients as listed on TO's website. They had a problem with the company that made their food bags for awhile, but it seems to have been resolved.

Why is is weird to find that carnivores can eat the same food? I think it's weird that most dog foods have such low protein levels.

Mudpuppy, I just hadn't ever seen identical dog and cat foods before, not saying it couldn't happen, but it struck me as odd. Especially since other places had different ingredients listed. And bags shipped from TO since TO changed their list say they have bison and rice. Yes I know bison was a misprint, but how is a customer going to that site going to know that food doesn't contain bison or grains?

It's totally understandable to have a problem with people that print bags, but it's not understandable that they continue to use the incorrect bags and don't put up notices on their site or use stickers to correct the ingredients on the bags. Or just get correct bags printed.

The whole amaranth thing has me questioning anything Timberwolf does. Apparently they removed it nine months ago, but they just changed the site last week and the bags still say it has it.

Is it too much to ask to know what is in the food you're getting??  [sm=banghead002.gif] [sm=banghead002.gif] [sm=banghead002.gif] [sm=banghead002.gif] [sm=banghead002.gif]

well, you know, that's why I mostly feed home-cooked and raw. I KNOW what's in it. Commerical foods at my house are usually only fed on those "gee, I forgot to shop" days.
    • Gold Top Dog
you might want to check those shipping rates. Since Petfooddirect's main warehouse is only twenty minutes from my house, I get really cheap and quick shipping from them. ONPS is usually considerably more expensive on their shipping to me.
    • Gold Top Dog
That's cool... guess it depends where in the country someone is... 33 lbs costs me $18.99 to ship from Petfooddirect, $12.28 from ONPS.
