    LizzieCollie,

I was at the feed store today and looked at a 20lb bag of Canidae that cost $20.00 flat! I looked up the prices of Beneful from PetsMart and a 17.6lb bag is $16.99!! OK, so let's buy Beneful, who you seem to say is a LOW COST FOOD! So, you get less food for more money than Canidae...OK that makes a lot of sense. Looks to me as if Canidae is the low cost food!! [8D] And...let's see the feeding guidlines...

    Canidae: 50-75lbs, 2 - 3 cups
    Beneful Original Adult: 51-75lbs, 3 1/3 - 4 1/3 cups.

So, you are feeding a significantly smaller amount of Canidae because it is more nutrient dense and higher quality. Therefore, feeding less = buying food less = spending less $$$!

By the way, here are the ingredients for Beneful Original:
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, vitamin supplements (E, A, B-12, D-3), added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, zinc sulfate, glyceryl monostearate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.
    F-4090

YUM! corn, wheat, by-products, soy, salt, added color, oh and YES...animal digest...what animal exactly??

    Now, compare it to Canidae:
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, White Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Herring Meal, Flax Seed, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Chicken, Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Dried Enterococcus Faecium, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of B2), Beta Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Papaya, Vitamin B12 Supplement.

Hmmmm, looks like a HARD decision! Which would YOU want to eat??

I think I will spend less and get one of the BEST foods out there and also feed less...at least my dog will be healthy. So, everyone...go buy Canidae if you want a low cost food! [sm=dance.gif]

    Try and argue that one...[:D]

so whats a good quality food for pitbulls?

I'm feeding my pit mix [linkhttp://www.sensiblechoice.com/SCHDLRA.HTM]Sensible Choice[/link]. I also had good results with [linkhttp://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html]Canidae[/link]. However, my boy was having some allergy problems and I've noticed from lurking on the pit bull boards that sunflower oil allergies are very common. Since Canidae has sunflower oil I decided to take him off of it to see if he improved. Pits are prone to skin problems as well, so a food with balanced essential fatty acids is good for them. My boy has a very sensitive stomach and Sensible Choice is what has agreed with him the best.

One thing you might notice if you move to a higher grade of food is that his coat condition and muscle tone will improve. On the "better" foods the dog's body tends to use more of the food. Dogs use protein and fat mostly, carbohydrates are stored in the body... resulting in poor muscle tone. "Grocery store" foods don't contain as much useable (meat based) protein. At least that's the way I understand it.

Any of the foods on [linkhttp://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#TopDry]this list[/link] would be good for him and there are lots of acceptable foods that aren't on that list. These links can help you in picking a good food [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=labelinfo101]Label information 101[/link], [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=betterproducts]Identifying better products[/link], and [linkhttp://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients]Ingredients to avoid[/link]. Hope that helps [sm=happy.gif]

Twin, she's in Puerto Rice... she may not be able to get the same things at the same prices we do.
    • Gold Top Dog
Canidae is non existing in Puerto Rico, but you can bet that I would do a nose dive into the pet shop if I was able to get a 20lb bag of Canidae for 20 bucks! Seems like an awsome price.

I know there is a warehouse with Pro Pac products but they only sell 150 dollars or more and only to pet shops. Now if only I could get that guy that has a huge crush on me to order it!

I havent been able to find any sites on that food anyone know of any?

MAYBE, Im not sure where to find it, ive called pet stores all around my area and no one has it. But maybe Lizzie will do a turn around on Exclusive and I can keep feeding her that.

Pro Pac looks really yucky or it could be my uneducated mind talking, but all their formulas have Chicken Meal (not so bad), Ground Yellow Corn and Chicken Fat as the first ingredients (Lamb Meal for Lamb formulas).

    Hey guys...

Yes, I know that LizzieCollie is from Puerto Rico. I just feel that even though Canidae is not an option for her...does not mean that people should have to go look into Beneful because she can get that. I want people to get past the misconception that the "cheap" food is cheaper, because it is NOT actually cheaper in the long run. It is just convenient because it is at the grocery store, so people will not go the extra mile to a feed/specialty store to pay LESS for a better/premium food.

Hopefully, this forum will better educate viewer's to see the truth in this. Most of the premium food websites, Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, Chicken Soup, etc...have store locater's that will show you where you can get these foods right in or near your Zip Code.

I just know how clueless I was about food/nutrition with my last dog, that I do not want other's to have to be misinformed. By using forum's like these I have learned about the importance of nutrition for my pets. I think that they actually eat better than I do! [sm=blush.gif]

Jondoe, how many walks does your dog get per day?? Does he get plenty of off-lead running outside of the backyard, which isn't enough, especially for a single dog who doesnt have a playmate. Without enough exercise obviously your dog is not going to get decent muscle tone. Add to that a bad food and you have no hope!

Are you saying that you got your dog at four weeks old?[&o]
    • Gold Top Dog
Lizzie, you dont' have a ton of selection where you are so I know that your choices are limited.  But even tho it's not a terribly costly food, Beneful is horribly over priced for what it is.  Shoot, Innova (natura) has a cost conscious food called Healthwise that's about 10 bucks cheaper per bag than Innova. And given the lower feeding amounts, it's actually cheaper than most of the "cheap" foods, just on the face of it, without factoring in better health, fewer vet visits, etc.     I looked at it and didnt' like the ingredients for my crew.  When asked for my recommendation it is ALWAYS Innova.   And I sure don't pay $50 per bag. EVO might run that high tho.

When I send pups to new homes, Beneful is always on my DO NOT FEED list.  I've SEEN the damage first hand that these low quality foods do to pups.

please explain why its not good for pitbuls to be kept outside.
    thanks

It would be my pleasure to, at least, give it a shot.

First, let me say that many people here think it is wrong to keep any dog outside on a permanent basis.  Although I can see their point, I disagree.  Lots of dogs are perfectly happy outside and, if properly provided for, lack nothing.  Lots of dogs are happy outside, but not pit bulls.

Pit bulls are VERY people oriented.  They want to be around people all the time, not just at the margins.  People are, very much, an important part of a pit bull's life.  A pit bull is not complete without people close by, virtually all of the time.  Close proximity of people is just not possible, to the extent necessary with a pit, if the dog is kept outside.   I truly believe that, with a pit bull, adequate interaction with people is critically important for his mental well being.  In other words, if a pit bull is not around people A LOT, he will go nuts, over time.

In addition, with pit bulls, there is the issue of theft.  Because of dog fighting, pits are a favorite breed for stealing.  Someone may well steal your dog, intending to use it to train their dog to fight.  The implications of that, you can well imagine.

Lastly, there are people who think pit bulls are horrible man eaters.  These people may want to do your dog harm.  Leaving him outside, all the time, makes it easier for them to do that.

I totally agree with Billy here.

A pit bull is not a field trial beagle.  What may be OK for some dogs becomes more complicated when it comes to pits.  A pit bull owner has to be as responsible as humanly possible because others will judge the entire breed by your actions.  The actions of indiviual pit bull owners effect where I, as the owner of a pit mix can live, which insurance companies I use, and how people view my dog and I.  That is no small thing.

It is entirely possible that while you look in the back yard and see a well loved (if you didn't care about the dog, you wouldn't be on here) pet, your neighbors look in your back yard and see "one of THOSE skinny pit bulls who lives outside all the time."  It's not fair or right, but it is reality.

Therefore, if you will not bring the dog in the house (which is unfortunate for the dog), you NEED to make sure that the dog is the best behaved, most non-barking, non-escaping, well mannered dog on the block.  Remember, the choices you make with your pit has an effect on THOUSANDS of owners and dogs, not just you and yours.

I feed my dog Nature's Variety Raw Medallions for breakfast and Nature's Variety kibble for dinner.
