Nope! Neither is the adult beneful. Put "beneful" into the search engine here, you will get loads of info with one resounding opinion, and that is,that beneful is bad, bad, bad![:'(]

It's not a good food. Dog food should have meat as the first ingredient and this doesn't. By-products, generic "animal" fat, soy, sugar, animal digest, artificial colors and menadione are just some of the problems with it.

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), chicken, rice flour, milk, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), calcium carbonate, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, brewers dried yeast, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite

Shippo's breeder in Canada feeds her dogs Performatrin Ultra. Although I am not particularly fond of a couple of the ingredients,it's loads better than anything Purina makes.

I'm not sure what else can be found in Canada...

Most good brands - Innova, Solid Gold, Fromm, Eagle Pack, Timberwolf Organics, Wellness, Nature's Variety, etc. - can be found in Canada.    PetValu's brand, Performatrin Ultra is pretty good (as someone else pointed out) and PetValu also carries Solid Gold, Merrick's, Fromm and Eagle Pack.   Although a small, local store is always nice, Global Pet Foods carries wonderful foods.

Have you tried Hill's Science diet? It's very nutritious, and comes in all flavors and specialties (tartar control, weight control, regular, puppy, etc.) I'm also in Canada, so you should be able to find this one. My dog really loved, the Hill's Science Diet T/D. It's like big chunks of food, so looks like treats, and it's good for tartar control. It's about the size of a chicken mcnugget. Good luck finding the right food for your dog.

I don't think that Hills Science Diet is a good food either (sorry to disagree). Most formulas have something other than meat as the first ingredient, followd by byproducts, soy, fillers, BHT, and artificial colors.

I also don't think Science Diet is a great food. Most of them have corn as the first ingredient, followed closely by chicken by-products... and it's not like those ingredients are there because it's the most healthy thing for your dog, it's what allows them to make the most profit.

well im just trying to find a nutritious food that picky dogs will eat
i think she likes small breed dog kibble...its really small bites
i might stick with the acana dog food....seems to be the best dog food i can get right now until i go to the city and see what they have
is it ok to put a medium sized puppy on small breed puppy food?

    • Gold Top Dog
The Acana food looks good. If you can get it I don't see any reason to switch.

Small breed puppy food is formulated specially for small breeds. She should probably be on something appropriate for her adult weight. If she's that picky you maight have to try a little tough love - put the bowl down for 20 minutes and if she doesn't eat she doesn't get anything else until next mealtime. Usually dogs won't skip more than a couple of meals this way.

i can leave the food out all day or even for the twenty minutes and she will go eat something else
i live on a acerage so either she will eat grain with the horses, scraps with the chickens, the cats food,go pick raspberries or try n dig up a carrot, find old bones.....shell scrounge and eat anything
i wont crate her or tie her up all day so she has no choice but to eat the dog food
i feed her dog food by hand but even then itll be a couple kibbles
is there any brand of dog food that has small kibbles?
i think her adult weight will be around 50-60 pds

I'm not sure how often pups should be fed, but what we did when my dog started leaving kibble in the dish was feed her twice a day, and leave the bowl down for 20 minutes.  There were times that I threw away kibble, but after a week or so she decided that eating her food was better than not eating her food.
    • Gold Top Dog
have you thought about mixing in some good canned dog food or learning how to prepare fresh meals?  feeding dry kibble by itself isn't terribly healthy for any dog, even if it's really good kibble.

If Purina or Beneful (or heck, even Old Roy!) is working for you continue feeding it! If you try Beneful and she does well on it continue feeding it, wouldn#%92t want anyone to tell you that you were pressured by an internet site to feed ‘high quality food#%92 I was told to feed a higher quality food (I fed Beneful and Lizzie LOVED It!) and after researching I switched to a better food, which she isn#%92t doing good on. I was then told that I was ‘junior highish#%92 because I was ‘pressured#%92 into feeding a higher quality food.

So there really isn#%92t a way to please some people, if you want to feed Beneful go ahead, it all depends on your pups needs, and even if you wanted to please them, some people will find something to ridicule anyway!
