Dry food / Canned food

Glenda, twin was asking about evo canned.Ihave fed both the evo dry and canned to my bull mastiff's,but they are full grown.I wouldnt have thought there would be any issues feeding evo cans to large breed pups.

Thanks Edie for pointing that out! [:)

Yes, I was inquiring about just the EVO canned (It's 95% meat). I, too, have heard that you should not feed EVO dry until 18 months of age. That is why I was wondering if the Canned was OK?

Thanks Glenda for the response. Maybe you were saying that the EVO Canned is too much? I'm not sure...

Oh and just to let you all know. I won't be feeding canned strictly. I would be mixing it with his Natural Balance Duck & Potato.

What about Innova Evo Red Meat?
It states that it's good for all life stages.

What about getting like, Canidae dry food and mixing it with a different brand of can food?

Dogs get tartar, just like people.  When you feed dry food, this helps to scrape the tartar.

Not true, they hardly chew kibble at all.  I also see a lot of other misinformation about canned in this thread.  It doesn't cause dental problems or stinky poop (which makes me laugh anyway, it's POOP!!)

It's nothing like them eating "guts' from an animal either.

ALLLL of the EVO products say that they are all life stages, but that doesn't mean that they are ok for large breed pups.  LB pups are the only critter they AREN'T ok for tho.

I honestly don't know about canned EVO.  Most of the good quality canned is mostly meat so maybe compare the protein levels in those to EVO before making a decision?

    Oh, heh, thanks.
I don't even own a dog yet, I'm not getting one for another year (unless I end up adopting and I get too antsy to wait a year), I just wanted to know.
Doing some early research, I suppose.[:)]

A good quality canned food is mostly meat.  Meat isn't laden with carbs.  Carbs stay on the teeth and cause tarter build up.  Guess what kibble is chock full of in order to make it stay in shapes?

A good quality canned food will NOT cause dirty teeth.  But, all dogs will get tarter buildup unless you are brushing the teeth or feeding rmb's to give them a natural tooth brush.

    glenda,

my brother and i were having a discussion about this over the weekend. he has started feeding their dogs some canned with their kibble. his wife thought it was a bad idea because she thinks the canned food will cause dental problems. i tried to explain just what you mentioned above and was met with quizzical looks and laughter from everyone there.

are there any articles that you know of that would explain this in a little more detail? i have been googling for one and havent found any yet.

    thanks
    bradley

I wish I could feed my dog canned food.  He has made several tries over the years with the same results, bloody stools and bloody vomiting.  Violently so in fact!  I think its too rich for his system or something.  I thought maybe anything with too much gravy perhaps, but even the more loaf, ground up styles make him sick.  Too much of a mess to clean up!  I have to stick with dry only with some people food mixed.

i actually read the whole stinky poop somewhere when I was a kid and had the cockapoo, but that was quite some time ago.
I probably speak from experience alone because all ive ever fed is Alpo and Pedigree canned YUCK YUCK! So even if youre feeding kibble it still smells a ton :-)

Is it OK to feed JUST canned food?

Would they be getting the same nutritional benefits?
    • Gold Top Dog
Yes, to both questions.  They actually get better nutrition from the canned.

    Yes.

    I prefer canned over kibble.

Wow, that's great to know! Thanks Guys [:)]

So, another question then. If I do feed canned only, do I need to stick with the same one? Or can I rotate between the flavors, i.e. beef, duck, venison, chicken, etc.? And if that's ok, then do I rotate flavors each day, week, month? I don't know if that would cause GI upsets...

Also, Should I rotate manufacturer's or just varieties of the same manufacturer?

    THANKS A BUNCH! [:D]

As long as your dog can tolerate it - then there isn't a problem with rotating or even mixing them together.

    Just wanted to add...

When rotating between different protein sources, I would stick with the ones your dog has previously consumed or would not feed a few exotic ingredients just in case you dog develops allergies later in life and you will need another source.
