Dry food / Canned food

I'm glad this topic came up because I was looking at feeding canned too. My boy is eating Natural Balance Duck and Potato. I was going to feed 1 can in the morning and 2 cups of dry in the evening.

Is it OK to feed just canned in the morning, and just dry at night?

If I decided to feed just canned, you guys say its perfectly fine, even better? Are they still getting the same amounts of protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, nutrients? They can do just fine without getting dry at all?

I've tried mixing the canned/dry together, but my pup prefers the canned...

Also, I was looking at trying the Innova EVO 95% Duck Canned...is it OK to mix canned products? Is this canned food too much for a young dog, he is only 9 months. I've heard EVO should not be fed until 18 months old, does this apply to the canned food too?

    THANKS! [:)]

Is there anyway you can return it and try a premium type brand (Eagle Pack, Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, etc)?  A lot of the pet stores and feed stores (around here at least) carry Canidae.  You can mix it (try 75% dry 25% wet).  Good luck.

    Trilby999,

Just wanted to add, that any RMB you feed your dog should NEVER be cooked Always feed them Raw.

No, I opened it  But, that's OK.  It was the smallest size.
I have to go shopping somewhere else.  The PetCo by me didn't have any of these premium foods you mentioned.  This is not the first time I have been disappointed by PetCo.  I should stop going there.
I've written down the five mentioned brands and will purchase whichever I find first.
Thanks for the advice.  (Thanks for the advice about the RMB's, also!)

A good quality canned food is mostly meat.  Meat isn't laden with carbs.  Carbs stay on the teeth and cause tarter build up.  Guess what kibble is chock full of in order to make it stay in shapes?

A good quality canned food will NOT cause dirty teeth.  But, all dogs will get tarter buildup unless you are brushing the teeth or feeding rmb's to give them a natural tooth brush.

    glenda,

my brother and i were having a discussion about this over the weekend. he has started feeding their dogs some canned with their kibble. his wife thought it was a bad idea because she thinks the canned food will cause dental problems. i tried to explain just what you mentioned above and was met with quizzical looks and laughter from everyone there.

are there any articles that you know of that would explain this in a little more detail? i have been googling for one and havent found any yet.

    thanks

Still haven't figured out if its good to feed just canned for breakfast, and just dry for dinner.......? [8|]

Twin, that's fine.  If your pup starts preferring JUST the canned, you might want to mix it in with kibble for both meals, but in general it shouldn't be a problem.

Canned food does not cause tartar, neither do soft treats.  Dogs get tartar, just like people.  When you feed dry food, this helps to scrape the tartar.  Dogs who eat only wet or semi-moist food are more likely to develop dental problems.  Dogs were originally meant to eat animals, this means that they would chew on the bones of those animals a lot.  This helped to clean their teeth.  Feeding only wet isn't too bad, but make sure you do something for the teeth!  On the other hand, feeding only wet food is usually unnecessary and more of an owner problem than a dog problem.  (Notice I said usually, I know there are some cases where wet is required.)

    Thanks Glenda! [:)]
I was looking for at least one response. [:D

How do you feel about the Innova EVO 95% Duck? Too much for 9 months? Would it cause GI upsets to use different canned foods, especially one as rich as EVO. He is eating NB Duck & Potato canned...

Sorry to butt in, but I have always read that canned food causes REALLY stinky poop. Now with a higher quality meat that may be untrue, im just curious because I have feed Lizzie canned once when she ran out of food and boy did it stink!!!

I don't know about other dogs, but I know that it's the specific kind of canned that affects it for my dog.    She doesn't have anything stinky with things like Sold Gold Lamb & Rice, but Merrick's Turducken was AWFUL.

If my little guy didn't have long face hair I'd be more willing to give him canned food, but with the long face hair he reaks of rotten meat for days afterwards.  So when I give him canned food I freeze it inside a hollow marrow bone.  However, I have found that ounce per ounce Nature's Varieties raw diet is less expensive than any of the premium canned foods.  I'd rather feed that anyways.  I think raw is better plus less work and less mess.  He gets 2 medallions as his "afternoon snack."  For breakfast and dinner he gets a variety of premium dry foods.

Here is my way to explain why canned food is good.  It's closer to a dogs natural diet of guts.

You'll forgive me for not remembering your pups breed, but I'm guessing it's GSD?  In that case, no, EVO isn't a good idea because at 9 months your pup is not fully grown.  EVO is not recommended for large breed pups, and frankly, even if it were, because Natura has flip flopped so many times on their position on lb, I don't think I'd trust them on this one.  I set two as my earliest age to feed EVO to the shepherds, and just recently my 18 month old boy hit yet another growth spurt....

I just wanted to let you know that you will not find Canidae or Eagle Pack in petco or any other chain pet store.
Canidae has a website with a store locator on it: [linkhttp://www.canidae.com]Canidae dog food[/link]
And eagle pack would be: [linkhttp://www.eaglepack.com]eagle pack food[/link]

I think you can order directly from Eagle Pack but with Canidae you'll have to find a store on their locator.
