Does YOUR Eagle Pack kibble smell?

Shipping and storage methods can expose pet foods to heat that can draw out some of the oils and odors. Not that it makes it rancid or bad, just odiferous. Maybe, and this is JMO, this may be the case here. Hopefully EP will answer your questions soon.

I feed the Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb and I don't think it smells "off" but it's not a great smelling food.  I also feed the Duck and it smells a bit better.  I also right now am feeding a bag of Chicken to a puppy I'm raising and it's not a great smelling food either.  Of the 3, the lamb smells the least appealing to me but not alarmingly so.

I did get an answer from Eagle today saying as long as it doesn't smell rancid or like paint thinner it is okay.  So now I'm thinking,,,,,,,,,,,,what exactly does rancid smell like??????   I don't know!  I do know it doesn't smell like paint thinner...that is for sure.  It smells like rotten eggs,,, but haven't smelled them for a while either. Really confused. For sure Bubblegum ate a week of it and didn't get sick.....I suppose that means she won't but gee I wish the bag was not so big,,,and that we would get thru it faster.

Do you think the place where you bought it would be willing to open another bag for a smell test? If that bag smells OK, maybe they'd just let you trade yours in.

Rancid smells rancid. You'd know rancid if you smelled it.Bubby probably wouldn't eat it, rancid, and it'd probably make her feel ill.

    I agree with Fuzzy

I can't imagine them wanting to open another bag,,,they sure couldn't sell it again if they did...I wouldn't buy it if it were opened.   I did find the date on the bag and no where near being expired.  I went down the basement where I keep it (its cooler down there) and brought it up and opened it,,,then we started to compare it to the duck,,,,and all of a sudden it doesn't seem so horrible bad....DH and I were sniffing one bag, and then the duck,,then the lamb...then the duck...and we both said it didn't smell as bad in the bag as it did when we were dishing it out from the container I keep it in. And just in case anyone is wondering,,I keep it in a plastic container that we bought big pretzels in a few years ago.... and I DO wash it and air dry it for a day or so before filling it up again,,,so its not the container.

OK, the boys have been out of town all week and I just realize how lonely I am - when I could be sharing special family moments like this!

From what I've heard, that's not the best way to store food. Even though you wash it and air dry it, plastic still harbors bacteria in tiny little cracks. The best way to store pet food (from what I've heard), is putting the orginal bag of food in a plastic storage bin with lid.

Yes, I've heard that also (about plastic containers)
But I do not store all of the kibble in a container, only about enough for a week. And its in a container that is made for food..and I had been told  that containers made for food were okay. The rest of the kibble is stored in the original bag.  I like to keep it where its cool which is down the basement,,,but its way too much trouble to run down there every dinner and breakfast time to get it out of the bag.

My parent's dog eats Cal. Nat Lamb & Rice and I think it does have a bit of a "funky" smell, lol.  Maybe it's just the smell of lamb formulas?  Does it smell stale?
    • Gold Top Dog
     Does it smell stale?

No,,,I don't think so.... not really stale to me at all.   You know I kept it in my kitchen,,,was going to take it back and then thought again....and again,,,,,,and again,,,,,and decided to put it in my container..it wasn't so bad from the bag.   So thinking maybe it WAS always like that.   Since she ate a weeks worth and liked it and didn't get sick or have any problems whatsoever,,,,,I am thinking maybe I need to pay more attention.....

Are rotten eggs rancid smelling? I agree with the comparison smell idea!
