Fish Oil?

    Fish Oil?

O.K. I know this is going to sound so stupid, but I need to know. If you all laugh, at least I can't see it. [:)]

When you all say you're giving your dog fish oil, do you mean that this "fish oil" comes in a capsule like thing? Like a vitamin or supplement?

And what does fish oil do for your dogs? What are the benefits?

Don't you know? Fish oil is a magical elixir! LOL! For both people and dogs! LOL! [;)]  I take it for good heart and skin health. It's good if you are diabetic. It's great for cholesterol. I have almost no eczema issues with a regimen of fish and coconut oil. [:D]  The Omega 3 oils are good for heart, joints, immunity, skin & coat, arthritis, and a variety of other things for dogs.

I used to give capsules, but then I realized it was a lot more cost effective for as much dog as I now have to get the oil in pump form. You want to get whole fish oil (not just cod liver oil, for example) and wild caught salmon, not farmed.

You want no more than 50 mg of Omega 3 per pound of body weight. So whatever you end up getting, make sure to check how much Omega 3 is in it. (For example, the capsules I take have 200 mg Omega 3 per 1000 mg of fish oil.)

You also want to make sure you supplement Vit E on a per pound basis as well (can't remember off the top of my head what that is).

O.K. because a couple of weeks ago I saw Fish Oil capsules and thought to myself, "Is what they're talking about?" I always thought it was actual oil. I had the memory of my step-dad's fish oil he used for something when he would go camping.

I don't give fish oil as I give salmon.

You can get capsuls to give, as alot of people take fish oils them selves you can also get bottles of fish oil. Someone will correct me if I am wrong I'm sure. I'm sure people buy the capsuls for them selves and give to their dogs, one or two a day. Not sure on the dossage.

Fish oils are great for their coats, they make them softer and shinnier.

Ahhh! So it does come in oil? Lol! After I saw the capsules, I felt so ridiculous for ever thinking it came in oil. Salmon is different? I want to get one, but not sure which one to get.

Is the fish in dog food (kibble or canned) sufficient enough?  (My dog eats Canidae and EP Holistic Chicken Meal & Rice).  I also supplement with Solid Gold Seameal.  So far his coat and skin and really nice.  Should I also add fish oil?

If you give the salmon oil, you should also supplement with vit E, but I can never remember what the ratio is...which is why I use Derm Caps or 3V caps.  You can buy the salmon oil capsules at almost any store that sells vitamins.  Walgreen is where I bought some, but we have a huge bottle now (for us humans) that we got at Costco.  It really is an oil, and as Jen said, you can buy it in a pump dispenser and just squirt it on the food too.  Both my dogs love the capsules and I can hand it straight out to them and they just munch it away.

I think mallymute meant that she doesn't supplement 'cause she already feeds her dogs actual salmon.

Salmon oil is fish oil, but not all fish oil is salmon oil.  You want to get wild salmon oil because it is the least contaminated of the fish oils; you don't want farmed salmon. Look for "wild" or "Alaskan" in the name.

It comes in capsules or "oil" format.  Lots of people like to just get a bottle with a pump top, and then they can jsut squirt it right on top of the food.  For smaller dogs, the capsules can be very convenient.  If you get capsules with 200 mg of Omega 3, for example, two or 3 capsules are plenty for a  small dog.

You do want to make sure you supplement Vitamin E whenever you give oils of any kind, so make sure you do that,t oo.

Here's the salmon oil I got last time:

I didn't know this; Jessie's been getting fish oil capsules made by DermCare and each capsule is100mg; the guaranteed analysis is: 360mg EPA and 240 mg DHA. If I understand what you said correctly, she's getting too much Omega 3.

The article in CleanRun recommended Grizzly Salmon Oil.  So my dogs get Grizzly Salmon oil.  I googled it and ordered it from where ever had the best deal including shipping.  I have no idea if it really is the best, but they got my $$.

I use Kronch Salmon oil. I started using it to help Marley's dry skin problem. It stopped flaking within a month!

How much does Jessie weigh? If she weighs 25 pounds, she can have up to 1250 mg of Omega 3 per day.  So, if you give her one capsule per day, she's getting 600 mg. You could give her up to 2 capsules per day.

Bailey gets 850 mg fish oil capsules twice a day along with 400IU of vitamin E 2x a day.  She did have demodex so that vit E is higher... you should give about 200IU 2x daily.

The fish oil in kibble is not enough as a supplement.  If you add sardines or jack mackeral, that would be.

If you do buy the oil make sure its fish body oil and not fish liver oil.

She weighs about 64 pounds. Thanks; my brain was fried yesterday because I only had about 4 hours sleep so that's why I was confused ( at least that's my excuse).[;)]
