Fish Oil?

Bailey gets 850 mg fish oil capsules twice a day along with 400IU of vitamin E 2x a day.  She did have demodex so that vit E is higher... you should give about 200IU 2x daily.

The fish oil in kibble is not enough as a supplement.  If you add sardines or jack mackeral, that would be.

If you do buy the oil make sure its fish body oil and not fish liver oil.

do you get the vitamin e in pill form just like for people? or do you get it specially for dogs from a pet food store?

You can buy the vit E at any health food store or drugstore.  It's inexpensive and many of the stores run a buy one-get one free sale all the time.

I just get the gelcaps from WalMart... same with the fish oil.

Baileys food is so loaded up with stuff, lol, but she doesnt notice a thing![:D]  And... her demodex went away and never came back... her coat is SO soft and shiny, youd never know she had it in the first place.  The power of supplements is amazing!

I got my aunt to start giving Lucy the vit E and fish oil and switch foods... all her itchiness went away, the shedding was waay better and her coat looks and feels worlds different.

Thanks for mentioning that... I do remember from when I looked through the sale things that drugstores often have those on the vitamins!  That would be great.  WalMart honors everyones coupons too... did yal know that..?  I didnt, but found out the other day when I was behind a woman with 600 coupons from different stores.  I asked the lady and she said yup!  Cool.

Sorry for not making this clear.

I give ridiculous amounts of oils, e and a[:D] Em has chronic demodex, and gets bathed very frequently. She needs it. It also helps her joints. Omega 3s are fantastic. I rotate fish, flax, and coconut. I usually use salmon or anchovy oil. I use different brands of oils and different kinds of fish, b/c I figure everybody gets their fish from different places, and the nutrient profile of each fish has got to be a little different. Hi, I am new to the forum and was reading about the fish oils.  My 25lb 2 year old cockapoo has some sort of allergy where he scratches his head and chews his legs.   The vet was not terribly helpful-just said its allergies, try antihistimines. This started in Feb this year.  Antihistimines help some but  wanted to add oils.  I just switched him from Innova to CalNat Lamb last week in case food is the problem-I wanted a simple non pultry food.  I also ordered a bottle of Microtek shampoo to try.   My question is- for my dogs weight-how much fish oil and vit E should he get a day and when?  Anything else I can try to help him?  Thank you, I appreciate all info.

    Vitamin E, 100 IU per 25 pounds

    Vitamin E, 100 IU per 25 pounds

This is per day, right? I give fish oil everyday, but always forget the vitE,they get probably every 2nd or 3rd day.Is this acceptable?

Bailey is 30 lbs and get 400IU 2x day... that would be about 700 more IU than your suggesting... I dont think you are correct on those amounts... or if so then they can be inceased greatly!  She is a demodex dog but I have read that 200IU 2x daily if perfect for most dogs... tiny ones and huge ones may differ.

Anything you supplement you want to give twice a day.  Most vitamins and herbals leave the system quickly and to really benefit they need a constant supply.  Vitamin C for example should be given 3 times a day ideally because it leaves the body within a few hours.  Echinacea is another that would ideally be 3 times.

Anyhow, when supplementing vitamins such as E use two times a day.  Read the bottles as if you were going to take it, most say this one there... and its to keep it in you full time... 24 hours is too long to get the maximum benefits.  Hope this helps.

That is the dosage my vet gave me to use in conjunction with omega-3, if your vet suggests otherwise, then I would go with his advice. [;)]

Edie, I give it every other day (ie: so one of my dogs, who is 24 lbs, gets 200 IU).

Okay yeah a vet may suggest quite lower amounts.  Before I knew Bailey was a demodex dog I gave her the 3v Caps liquid which has the E and A in it already (came from the vet), just not enough for her.. very little actually, but it can be great for them to just get a small supplement.  Even that says give at least once a day tho.

My amounts have not been cleared by my vet, Im going per Callies article on Demodex and how to treat it without going to the vet (which has worked wonderfully) and my own internet research.[;)]
