    Try these for treats

    HEALTHY WEIGHT GAIN MIX

1 pint whole fat Cottage Cheese
1 lb turkey (or any other ground meat) burger (raw)
2-3 eggs - boiled in the shell for 30 seconds*
2 tablespoons Flax Seed or Olive oil
1 can sardines or tuna fish

It is full of protein, essential fatty acids and digestive enzymes.

*Boiling the eggs for 30 seconds denature the whites and leave the benefits of the yolks intact.

    WEIGHT BOOSTER

    • 10 eggs

    • 10 packs gelatin

    • 12 oz. molasses

    • 2 boxes of shredded wheat cereal, crushed

    • 1 jar wheat germ

    • 5 cups melted lard

    • 1 jar peanut butter

Mix with your hands. Roll into balls. Keep all unused in the freezer. Take one meat ball (per dog) out every morning and allow to thaw for evening meal.

    TIPS

For skinny dogs, adding avocados helps to put on pounds and mix in a little bit of alfalfa (which can be found at most health food stores) into their meals.

Try some of these suggestions to tempt the appetite:

    • Eggs lightly scrambled in butter and adding yoghurt or cream cheese

    • Sautéed chicken liver in butter

    • Hard boiled eggs

    • Cooked or boiled hamburger, mixed with grated or parmesan cheese

    • Baby foods, such as pureed meats

    • Homemade chicken soup with noodles

    • Canned salmon or sardines

    • Macaroni and cheese with minced beef or sausage

    • Plain yoghurt with pureed liver, mix well

    • Canned chicken chunks

    • Bites from your own plate

    Herbal Supplement Blend

    • 1 ounce each alfalfa; marshmallow root; comfrey; mullein leaves; dandelion root; nettles; parsley

    • 2 ounces each: burdock root or seed; chamomile; horsetail; oat straw; red clover; rose hips; rosemary; slippery elm bark; thyme
    • ¼ ounce each catnip; fennel seeds; garlic powder
    • 1 dash cayenne pepper

If using cut and sifted herbs, slenderise to a coarse powder. Mix with already-powdered herbs, and store in a dark jar in refrigerator or cool place.

To use for dogs: give 1 tablespoon to 1 cup per day, depending on the size of the dog.

Mix herb powder with food or sprinkle it on top. This is only a mineral and preventive medicinal supplement.

For pregnant or nursing pets, add to the above:
½ ounce each: chickweed; comfrey; milk thistle; raspberry leaf

The Comfrey is in addition to the amount used in the basic recipe.

11 month old dogs should be skinny as rails. Would NOT attempt to fatten her up.

    • Puppy

I have a dog with the same problem I used Nutro, Natural Choice, HIGH ENERGY performance dog food. It worked beautifully.

Mudpuppy, this dog is now over two years old.  Old thread.

I used to like Nutro High Energy but they've changed it up and increased the icky factor.  I now like Diamond Naturals Extreme Performance.  My rescue LGD Min has a very screwed up system from a lifetime of starvation, and it's the only kibble that she gains weight on.  But I'll be switching to homecooked for both of them once we move.

Shadow, fall of 2004, 1 year and a few months old. You can count his ribs, inspite of eating Nutro and getting bits of meat and treats, etc.

Shadow this last March, stilled furred up (double-coated) from winter (about 4 years and 9 months old at the time) eating during a snow blizzard.

My pup Rivers is 18mnths old, Nova Scotia Duck Toller/Shephard mix, his hip bones and his spine are VERY easily felt. His ribs only have a very slight layer of cover, non visible mostly by his hair, but if he gets wet, you can plainly see them.

This dog is not super high energy, but does appear to have a fast metabolism. Aside from the mild stomach bug he just had yesterday, he's the perfect picture of health from energy level right down to the way he's built.

I'm not stressing over the fact that he's thin, he's getting plenty of nutrients, and I actually prefer him on the thin side. These dogs tend to live longer with less joint problems, rather then several pups his age I've seen that are already 5-10# overweight even at only a year of age.

Rivers is eating a mixture of homecooked beef, beef heart, and Preference pre-mix from the HonestKitchen freeze dried mixture of veggies/fruits. He gets no grains, I do not like grains in the diet.  BUT, that IS one way to put on weight.

Personally, I think your girl is fine and beautiful. So many dogs are on the heavy side, count your blessings that she's at an excellent weight....as long as she has plenty of energy.

Here's a recent one of Rivers

I have to say that I somewhat agree with this, so long as the dog is parasite free and has no medical issues to the contrary.  When Sequoyah was little, I thought she would never gain weight, and she was on great foods.  But, she was just a high energy growing dog.  Now that she is three, she looks very normal, and in fact I had to reduce her food at one point in order to achieve the svelte form that she should have.  Vets have commented that all three of my larger dogs are in wonderful condition, and they are all on the light side, unlike their junk food junkie mom;-)

Um, edited to say - hey Ron, is THAT what you guys call a blizzard????  Look up "blizzard of 78" to see what they look like here:-)))

I know it's an old thread but I agree with keeping the youngin's skinny :)  Ari's breed is naturally on the slimmer side (not quite like Irish Setter's but along those lines when you compare Flat Coats with other retrievers) and I have gotten comments to fatten her up.  Growing dogs should be kept healthy skinny.  We recently had to recalculate Ari's serving sizes.  She's slowing down on the growing so she was getting just a tad too much weight on her (aka couldn't feel her ribs as easily as I'd like too).

And yeah Ron that's no blizzard lol!
