German Sheperd, best food for breed?

    • Gold Top Dog
I don't know if you've discovered this site, but there are several breeders on it, many of whom could help you locate a reputable breeder in Quebec.

If you don't mind "Importing" I would suggest Mittelwest Kennels in Illinois, USA.  Great lines, great dogs with solid temperaments, beautiful animals with high show ratings, AND Julie has dogs that she's sold showing and working in MORE than schutzhund.

I'm also a member of germanshepherds.com and it is a GREAT site for newbies and oldies alike.

But what happened to Wellness??? I would've gone for that one for sure, but now I don't know.....

It used to be good right??? With real chicken and blueberries and veggies and fruits....

What happened?? I'm going to check the label next time I go in the store to see what's different...

They used to talk so highly about how their food was baked and therefore easier to digest.  Then they sold out and stopped baking their food.  That's what happened to Wellness.  But I use Wellness canned food with my cats.  It's one of the only one's they'll eat and is one of the best for UTI's.  So it's not a bad company at all, even with the changes.

Talking about baked.  Breeder's Choice Avo Derm is a baked food.  It's great for large breeds  with it being baked.  Baked foods are easier to digest an their for less likely to cause bloat.

Eagle Pack makes a holistic large breed formula.

One of Timberwolf's formulas are designed for large breeds too.

    Innova makes a large breed.

You know, Glenmar raises shepards, so I would probably go with Innova first seeing as she has already done the food expiramenting on the breed and has found what has worked.

I've got Shepherds too jojo.  Ranger constantly gacked on Innova (after I convinced his co-owners to switch >.<;).  Never tried it on Strauss.  I'm not saying Glenda is wrong at all, especially since she stated Innova is what works for her crew, but the point people are trying to get across is there is no perfect food for every single dog.  Every dog is different and will react differently to different brands

A lot of dogs that used to do well on it had soft stools after they changed it. I'm not sure which ingredients were changed since I don't feed it but one of thier reps said the reason some dogs have soft stools is because they changed the way they processed the food.

From what *I* could tell looking at the bag, they decreased the meat content, increased the grain content, and shifted ingredients around. They also said that they now spray a fat mixture on the outside of the kibble to increase palatability. My dogs had trouble with it starting with the changes. Up until that point it had been one of my favorite foods.

    Hi Jaie,

Canidae is a great dog food, but some dog don't do good on it like any other food some do good on eagle pack some don't, so you will have to try it on your dog to see how he does, but my GSD do great on it, She is Healty, great shinny coat, loves the taste, for my part i have only good thinks to say about Canidae...Go see on [linkhttp://www.Canidae.com]www.Canidae.com[/link] for more info.
I Live in the West near Vaudreuil so I have 3 Global store near , the closest to Montreal would be Pointe-Claire,but on the Canidae web site they say they sell to those store in Montreal:

I have a german shepherd who will be 2 in november, so i hope to switch him to EVO soon after. I have had good experiences with Innova and Canidae. I didn't like eagle pack. My GSD doesn't really like the taste of either, but he's very picky.
