German Sheperd, best food for breed?

     Hie everyone!!!
I'm new here but I have just one little question that I hope some of you will be able to answer....
In summer 2007, I plan on getting a German Sheperd pup and since I'm dedicated on my pup being has healthy has possible, I'm doing a big  research on the best dog food for the breed.... Because I know some breeds need specific care, (I think German Sherperds are one of them), I want to buy the best food possible for him, (or her!!)....
I used to love Wellness food for my cat! Until they got pretty sick off of one bag....  But I still like that brand, it was probably just a bad bag.... Anybody know if this brand would be good??

    Please, all suggestions are welcome!!!

     Anyway, thanks for helping!!!

I feed Innova to my crew.  When pups are weaned from momma it's right onto Innova (these are foster pups but they don't all ever seem to leave).  Innova does have a large breed formula and I think a large breed puppy formula, but I've always used the regular, all life stages (bright GREEN bag) and mine have done well on it.  They also get homecooked for dinner most nites, or raw.

Wellness is not the product it once was.  There have been changes in Old Mother Hubbard, the company that makes Wellness, and the product line has suffered.  IMHO there is NEVER an excuse for a "bad" bag of pet food.

That's what I thought as well.... So I changed the brand to Royal Canin and then I had to seperate from them...:(
Innova has been suggested alot to me, so I might go for that...

So Wellness is not good anymore!?!?! Really...

Sad, I used to like that for my cats...

    Innova is the best?

You'll get a lot of different opinions, but yes, I think Innova is best.  Innova EVO is better still, but it's not for large breed pups and I won't feed it to a pup under 2 so I'm still waiting for everyone to be old enough to eat it......

RC is an ok food, but it's basically middle of the road with a HIGH price tag.  I've found that RC is MORE expensive than Innova and Innova has far superior ingredients.

    Innova is the best?

There isn't any one best. Some people have good results with Innova, some don't. It is a very dense, high calorie food and some dogs have trouble digesting it. Some other good brands for digestibility and palatibility are Canidae, Nature's Variety, Natural Balance, Royal Canin, Sensible Choice, California Natural, Healthwise, and Eagle Pack.

I'll agree with Sooner on Canidae, Natural Balance, Cal Nat and Eagle Pak Holistiques.  I'm not familar with Natures Variety or Sensible Choice, but I do think Healthwise (by the folks who make Innova and Cal Natural) is a bit on the grain heavy side and I personally think the the kcals are too low.  I don't think that you get what you pay for with RC.  I've fed RC and I truely think it's too high priced for what you are getting.

But what happened to Wellness??? I would've gone for that one for sure, but now I don't know.....

It used to be good right??? With real chicken and blueberries and veggies and fruits....

What happened?? I'm going to check the label next time I go in the store to see what's different...

My friend feeds her show Shepherd Canidae and rotates with Nature's Variety and NRG dehydrated foods.  She started her Shepherd on Canidae all life stage when she got her at 10 weeks.[:D]

Jaia, just as sooner mentioned, Innova is not the best food for all dogs.  My Rottweiler started bloating when I put her on Innova...that plus the stress of moving.  When I started her on Nature's Variety she has not had a problem..just for the heck of it I got another bag of Innova and she bloated again.

Yup, no one food is best for all dogs or even a certain breed. These are the foods I really like:

    Timberwolf Organics
    Nature's Variety
    Innova
    California Natural
    Healthwise
    Solid Gold
    Pinnacle
    Natural Balance

I gave in to the TWO craze and had my sister pick me up a bag when she was downstate.  I didn't like that it doesn't list kcals per cup on the bag and I'm worthless at converting from the metric system.  I also wasn't happy with the poop.  Much larger than with Innova, and VERY black and tarry.

As stated before, there is no best food, for any breed.  My GSD is currently on Natural Balance Potato and Duck after a temporary switch from Fromm's Four Star Whitefish and Potato.

By the way, it's German Shepherd, not Sheperd ;-)  Where do you plan on getting your GSD from?  Are you looking for American showlines, German showlines, DDR (East German working), Czech (Working), or West German Working lines?

My dog itched like crazy on Innova... different foods work for different dogs. [;)]

OK, I'm not trying to crap on anyones food choices.

The question was, what is the best food to feed german shepherds.  My answer, based on my experience and opinion is that Innova is the best for MY german shepherds.  My comments on other foods were also based on my knowledge, experience, etc.

When you have SIX german shepherds, stool quality and quanity is important.
