Sera, somehow we posted at almost exactly the same time. My response is right above yours.

Oye - we posted at the same time! :)

Well, you have to go with your gut... and it doesn't sound like he's behaving at all 'normally' and I'm sure you know what's best for him.  I have my fingers crossed that it's nothing at all... just some kind of weird spookies.

Hang in there... I have you guys in my thoughts.

Thank you Sera! I called the emergency vet and they recommended taking him in just to be sure. Btw, Gingerbread is the Shih Tzu on the left of my signature. I've been in tears over here because he means the entire world to me. I'll post an update when I get back.

Sending good vibes to you and Gingerbread.

We'll be keeping you and your pup in our thoughts!

Thank you! Smile We're back at home and thank goodness everything is okay. He injured his back, but not too badly. They gave him a pain injection, sent him home with a couple of prescriptions and he can't jump onto or off any furniture for 7 days. Hopefully that won't be too hard. Right now he is being a "puppy rug" and will probably stay wherever I put him.

I'm really glad that I went to the emergency vet. Seeing the x-ray and knowing that he didn't have an abdominal obstruction or other injury made me feel so much better! Plus just to get him pain relief at least 6 hours before he would have if I had waited for the regular vet. Signing off and going to bed. Smile

so glad, it's nothing serious! hope he feels better in no time!!

Too late to offer any advice but I would have done just what you did.  So glad he got some pain relief and you got some mental relief.  It is just too scary when something pops up suddenly in the middle of the night.  Rest easy Gingerbread and feel all better soon.

So glad he is going to be okay, the symtoms sounded to me just like April's.  She had disk disease.  Keep her movements very low please.

I'm so glad everything is okay---how  nerve-wracking.  Also wanted to say, that though I do not have time to post much, it sure is nice to see Gingerbread's sweet face again--------and congrats on the new little one.

Glad to hear he's doing better !!

I'm late to this thread, but I'm really relieved that it wasn't an obstruction or anything more serious. I hope Gingerbread's back feels better soon.

In the future, after he becomes more active again, you might consider getting one or 2 doggy ramps or steps for him to use to get up and down from the bed, sofa, etc. so he won't re-aggravate his back.  Also maybe raise his food and water bowls a little.  Many years ago, I had a Lhasa with a very bad back, so I know how careful one needs to be.  Shihs also have to be mindful of their backs - maybe because the back is longer than their legs, relatively.  They sure are cute though.  Hope Gingerbread feels better soon!

I'm so glad it wasn't serious; give him some belly rubs for me. Feel better soon Gingerbread.

Thank you so much everyone for caring! Auburn- I remember reading about your little April and how you lost her, I'm always so worried about losing Gingerbread. Something similar happened to my Persian cat and he had to be put to sleep right before his second birthday (in 2003) so that's why I freaked out when I saw that he was having difficulty jumping up.

I'm a little worried about him again though because he's trembling again and has very little appetite. I called the vet and they recommended bringing him back for a re-check, so that's what I'm going to do.

I just saw this!  I hope Gingerbread is doing OK tonight.  I've been there a million times with late night scares and I know how it feels.
