    traditional breed haircuts

I have a question for all the other groomers out there. Do you find that there is some confusion about what the traditional style is for certain breeds? Today I groomed a cute little miniature schnauzer, and her owners said just put her in a schnauzer cut. They were astounded when they picked her up, because they had never seen her cut that way. The owners kept hugging her and saying how wonderful she looked and how soft her hair was, and how good she smelled!  What the hey, just a schnauzer "do".

This is not the first time, a lot of folks have been surprised by their dogs haircut when they ask for a regular cut. I show them pictures of show dogs, and yet they didn't realize that that is what the breed looks like. Don't get me wrong, I'll groom a person's pet however they want it!  After all, I try to make the client happy, and they all adore their babies.

A number of years ago I had a very particular client call and ask if I knew how to pet groom a Bouvier. Yes I do. Well, she came in and we talked and come to find out she wanted a giant schnauzer cut on her dog. She had never seen a photo of a full grown Bouvier in a traditional haircut! The two breeds are very, very different!  So, is this common in other areas of the country?  I only groom part-time now, and for the joy of it, but a number of years ago it was my profession. I've been a groomer in Denver, Topeka, and So. California, and in the west it seems fairly common.

Yes! People have no clue.... I had a lady tell me she wanted a Yorkie cut. Come to find out (after lots of wiggling and worming for it), she wanted a Westie skirt with a short, short Yorkie head.

I only groom *one* Westie with a carrot tail.

I've never put a puppy cut on any dog, but people ask for it all the time (and in my brain, the only "puppy cut" is an under 11 mos show Poodle clip).  I've never put a continental on a dog. I've never properly groomed a Shih Tzu, or anything that should be stripped. *shrugs* I'm a pet groomer. It is what it is. I show groom my personal dogs, and a couple of friends' dogs, and the rest of them get crazy cuts. Crazy cuts are more fun, though, LOL. More room for error, and usually people are pretty happy if you get close to what they wanted.

So true!  If their dog is clean, happy, and smells good, most people are pleased even if the cut isn't quite what they wanted. Personally, I love to put a tidy Schnauzer type clip on a poodle with nice crisp curls. They're so darn cute!

I'm not a groomer but my Mom askes for a 'puppy cut' on Taz all the time.

So - his body is shaved, his head is trimmed, and his tail is thined. Taz is a Shih Tzu/Pomeranian mix.

I honestly like a 'puupy cut' on Poodles - thou I'm not a Poodle person.

Do most groomers typically have books w/pics of "traditional" cuts to refer to? My groomer does a really good job, but I have seen some really bad hack jobs on Craigslist by people *claiming* to be groomers when it looks like all they did was take a pair of clippers to the poor dog and shave it! Anyone can do that.... it's not right!!

I have to keep my girls in puppy cuts or they just get too dirty with all the walking we do. I would love to grow their hair out longer....

I *love* puppy cuts, and wish I had the opportunity to groom a dog in that "clip" (it's shaved feet, face, base of tail, sanitary, with a scissored body). Animal Control has a REALLY adorable, white, toy Poodle.... I was so tempted to adopt him, today, so I could play with his hairs!

    1. Gosh jennie, "playing with their hairs". That brings back memories of my grandson Josh saying his mom and I were "playing with dog's hairs"!! I still tell folks that I've got to go brush my BC's hairs, and get funny looks. Do what?
    2. Back to topic, I used to groom a brown toy poodle in a traditional show puppy trim. Started when she was 8 weeks old, and they liked the cut so  much, she was still in the same do" at 10 years. Her owners even wanted the very full topknot with several rubberbands. She was a joy to do as she came every two weeks, and she loved to be groomed!

To answer you Sunshine girl, I would guess that most groomers "should" have a book  with all breed grooming, I personally have several. I also have the AKC Dog Book, the CKC Dog Book, and several books on dog breeds. With all the televised dog shows, you would think more groomers would be aware.

Most coated breeds per se don't have a "puppy cut". Pupppies are shown with their coat neatened (pads, etc.), and as they age the coat just gets longer and fuller. So to my mind, a puppy cut on a Lhasa or Shih tzu is about 1" or 2" of hair scissored all over. Cute, fluffy, and easy to keep clean.

LOL, I'm always saying that. I have to comb their hairs, and trim their hairs, and wash their hairs. Pfft, dogs don't care that I'm being silly!

I would loooove an every two weeks, "full coated" Poodle. That would be sooo much fun!

Giggles! Just got done braiding my own hairs. I have several clients that would like to bring their poodles every two weeks, but my real job is being an industrial electrician. My "regular" clients often have to wait until I get back home, and sometimes I'm not home 10 minutes and the phone starts ringing.

I have my list of clients to call whenever I'm home, and the Christmas grooms are already lining up. This trip (tomorrow) should only take a week to 10 days, then I'll be grooming my butt off for a few days!

Last Christmas my boss was astounded when my husband called and said he had booked 25 dogs for the two days before Christmas. The boss couldn't believe I'd drive 8 hours home and then spend the next two  days grooming dogs. Hey, it's fun!!

I'm slammed, right now! I'm loving it! I love grooming around the holidays. Everybody comes more often, and the whole family comes in, and it's just so much fun. I get cute little pictures of Fluffy under the tree, or on Santa's lap, or with the dressed up kids.... I love it!

'Tis the time of year when everybody likes to get special haircuts!!  No more #7 summer strips, woo hoo!  Bows and bandanas for everybody, even those that normally don't like such siiliness.

The cute pictures and cards, and treats to increase the size of my rear. The holidays are so much fun!

I thought you don't shave the face for a puppy cut?  My friend keeps her toy poodle in a puppy cut and I don't like it at all.  Too amorphous for me!

Lots of people say "puppy cut" and it's not. A true puppy cut is shaved feet, face, base of tail, and sanitary. The rest is really full, with defined lines. It's beautiful.

From the AKC site, " A Poodle under a year old may be shown in the "Puppy" clip with the coat long. The face, throat, feet and base of the tail are shaved. The entire shaven foot is visible. There is a pompon on the end of the tail. In order to give a neat appearance and a smooth unbroken line, shaping of the coat is permissible."
