Dual-sired litter?

    Dual-sired litter?

I was just looking at a breeder's website and it said that they are considering making their next litter a "dual-sired" litter. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what does this mean? The bitch is bred to two different males in the same heat or what?

Yes, and then the puppies are DNA tested to determine which pup came from which sire.  Once the litter has been divided, they are registered normally, as 2 separate litters.

Holy cow, I didn't know they did that! Very interesting...Thank you!

     But... WHY? That's so weird!

    • Gold Top Dog

The reasons I've seen is usually because they are worried about the litter taking, usually older semen (frozen) is being used so they are doubling their odds.  Some bitches have only so many heat cycles, if they are eratic or close together, that ages them and they don't have the chance to try over and over, so they throw it all against the wall and see what sticks, so to speak :)

I've also seen one litter that they bred a top winning conformation dog and a top winning field dog.... i'm not sure why they would do it like that and not just do two seperate litters.... except that most bitches should only be bred a max of 3 times and they didn't want to take two breedings for it?  Maybe she was on her third litter?

    Anyway, that's what I've seen.

     Crazy.

Everybody I know mostly just breeds... dogs to dogs, LOL. I don't think I know anybody that actually does AIs. At least, I don't hear about it if I do.

My last breed mag came out was advertising two such litters... I think it's a sign of the times. They are-a-changin'!

AI is very common for my breed?... or maybe the people I associate with in my breed.  People shouldn't breed for ease... so if someone is picking a stud cause they are close... that's maybe not the best combo.  Often the closest stud isn't the most compatible.  And since bitches would be the ones to travel, often times people just ask for chilled semen.  We also have a quite a bit of frozen from the last generation that is being used, I've noticed.  Anyway, it's very interesting!!

Yes it is and sorry but it still is an Icky concept for me.  Basically most breeders doing this will be trying to back up a an older stud who may not be shooting a ton of swimmers or a younger unproven dog who again may not be producing what is needed.... Then you have the oops litters where two males get to the girl and you choose to DNA the pups rather than cancel the litter.

I like things clean , simple and straightforward.  If it doesn't take it wasn't meant to.

I can't imagine chosing this option. Maybe be if for some reason you only have the possibility of one breeding on a bitch and you just can't decide on a sire.

    • Gold Top Dog

Is this common?  The only reasons I know of are oops litters, or if the breeder breeds the bitch twice and for whatever reason cannot be in the same place as the stud two times and insists on two breedings for that heat to make sure it "takes".

    • Gold Top Dog

    It depends.

It's something I've contemplated for Rittie, since she's 4.5. I've got three dogs I really like for her, and I won't breed her more than three times (and really, I'd like to just breed her twice - this current breeding to Mac is one of the two. I guess I could see where it'd make sense with a breed that tended towards large litters- if you could get an even split between 5 pups and 5 pups, that's still PLENTY to choose from. :P But you can't custom-order littersize. :P I think it makes the most sense when you're doing a litter like with frozen semen and there's some doubt as to the viability of the semen AND an older bitch where missing starts to become more of a worry.

Nope sorry and this goes back to folks personal beliefs and I get that but NO way..... Let me do a Disney.... Hmmmm okay one dark a stormy night an old champion who's owner is driving down a really awful road  crashes and dies.. the family is inconsolable , yet some how the good guy's dog gets out and nails the girl in heat next door and ...

Sorry not even for Disney can I see a point to a double sire litter!!!    YECCCCCCHY. Seriously make up your mind, there are so darn many pups in the world for the serious breeder to claim a purpose to breeding this is just the Twilite Zone crap needed to make all of us look stupid.

Breed when you think you are bringing some thing to the breed. Don't hedge your bets  wondering if the old guy, the ICED versions what evers  I am sorry NOT every litter was meant to be,  This is not Star Trek Folks it's beautiful puppies.

If you get your puppies out of the two sires...not guaranteed...that's potentially one LESS breeding the bitch will endure...good for her...you can spay her earlier. I see no issue if everyone minds their p's and q's.

If a dog is capable of having more than one sire on a litter why not use that to spare the bitch a whelp.....pricey tho!

ETA: also no problem with frozen semen. Technology has made many things easier...and shipping a bitch is always risky. Ditto the nice access to overseas breeders to widen the genepool. No big deal to me.

    • Gold Top Dog

I know breeders who have done it or have considered it.  I don't have an issue with it at all.

This just makes zero sense to me.  You are sparing the girl an additional whelp but you are putting her with 2 males or a male and a vet procedure??  Maybe I have girls who are less than happy breeders. But it is common in the RR would to have to muzzle the bitch to keep her from eating the Male's face.  I have also know bitches who soured on the vet after having and AI.    So in no way can I see this "sparing" her anything. IT is invasive in more ways than one it is also IMO lazy.  I drove my girl from Alabama to Chicago to breed her to the top dog. I spent 11 days sitting in my RV in a parking lot testing to progestin levels so assure she was ready and the tie would be more likely to succeed. I had 10 gorgeous pups. I only breed a girl 3 times. I only have her with the stud 4 times . IF I am meant to have a spectacular litter I will. You can not take  your girl to every dog that makes you go WOWZA!  but you can carefully research an pick a good one.

If it is your bag to go dual sired litters fine, but please do not try to wrap it up in a concern for the comfort or safety of the bitch.  A dual Sired breeding is likely to produce puppies of different sizes and a larger litter.  That whelping is far more dangerous than dealing with a relative consistent between normal expectations. Driving a bitch to a breeding is a pain no doubt. and waiting until she is 100% ready is a tiresome chore. Shouldn't it be??? Otherwise we would be exactly like the BYBS and Millers we scorn. Pushing a bitch to deliver as many as possible, and using only what is closest for breeding, weather IA flown in and a live stud for back up....

I know I feel strongly about this. But I look at Bulldogs who can no longer breed and deliver naturally, I look at show dogs who got the anti season shot so may times to avoid blowing her magnificent coat and the numbers she will lose in the ring while having the pups....who are now sterile. Sometimes we humans just interfere to dang much . Everytime you breed your girl you are risking her life. You need an honest reason to make this choice. You NEED to keep it simple and straight forward. Pick a Good stud that will improve your lines, pick A dog who you admire and believe will compliment your girl. THEN go ahead with the breeding. Using two studs is in my head and heart just making a special thing between you and your girl a business. And my kennel does not go there. If you do and can feel cool about it that is something your head and heart can deal with.
