    Medical Question for Willow-Update

Should I give her her heartworm pill (Interceptor) while she's on the Prednisone??

The two shouldn't affect each other, I don't *think*. I know they didn't say anything about Emma's, when she was on Pred, but it was not long term.

I don't think that you will have an issue.  Bevo took his June & July doses of Interceptor while on pred, with no issues.  (June dose was 30mg twice a day, July dose was down to 5mg once a day)

Yes, they actually have studied using the two together to treat parasite infections to see if the prednisone decreased the itching while the ivermectin treats the parasite.

OK, thanks everyone.  I'll give it to her, as soon as I either find them or buy  more. . .I must be slipping I'm usually so on top of these things.

On a happy note---it's her last dose of Doxycycline--she took 120 pills.  So, she's just on Prednisone now and we are hoping that if he platelets are still good we can slightly reduce the dose this week.

Good for willow! I'm sure she will be off everything soon.

Woo hoo! Things should start getting back to normal for you all! (If you remember what that is, that is.)

Thanks all.  We've got a ways to go though.  She's got another blood test tomorrow and we'll see if she can start weaning.  I'm not sure though.  I thought I was going to have to bring her to the ER last night.  She was fine but all of a sudden I noticed a little bit of blood around her mouth.  I didn't panic much, wiped it up, she must of pawed it or scratched it on the deck.  But, it didn't stop too easily--which is weird because her platelets were plenty high enough to not have to worry about bleeding.  I opted to keep a close eye on her last night and it did stop.  And, today she's doing well, suffering the side effects of the Prednisone but the bleeding stopped.  But, she's going to see the doctor for a check up tomorrow along with the blood test.

Oh no. Lori, I must be tired tonight for I misread your post. And then I just now saw this follow-up. Oh, you are both so strong and brave.

Hang in there. Sending you good thoughts as you work with this ongoing situation.

Thanks, I'm pretty scared.  But, trying not to show it to her.

Lori--what did you find out today?

    • Gold Top Dog

The bleeding I saw was from irritation to her lips being so wet all the time--chapped lips!  I could of screamed!  Here I am thinking her platelets dropped for some reaon and she's bleeding.  But, that was not the case.

Her bloodwork yesterday showed platelets in the normal range!!  The vet said she couldn't be more pleased with how she's responded.  So, she is going to slowly wean her off the Prednisone.  She's been getting 2 pills in the morning and 2 at night.  As of today it's two in the AM and only 1 at night.  And, she'll have another blood test in two weeks to see how she's responded to that.

I'm really relieved.  I finally got a few hours of sleep.

    Thanks.
