    Callie I need your advice!!!

I am going nuts here. I really am going to break down and bawl my eyes out if I dont figure something out quick.

Lillie is scratching herself bald. She doesnt have fleas or ticks. She hasnt had any food changes in a few months now. She is scratching her belly and back legs raw. Every morning when I go to let her out of the crate there are clumps of hair on the tray.

    Any one have any suggestions?

     When did she start?

Have you used any cleaner on the floor? Her crate? What about your laundry detergent? New shampoos?

What does the skin look like? Is it red? Torn? Oozy? Flaky? Crusty? Grey? Normal?

    Does she smell any different?

When did she start?  Couple weeks ago. I thought it might be fleas so I got some frontline plus. So no more fleas or ticks.

Have you used any cleaner on the floor? I use the same old stuff I always use.

Her crate? I just clean the tray with water once in a while.

What about your laundry detergent? same old detergent

    New shampoos? nope

What does the skin look like? Is it red? Torn? Oozy? Flaky? Crusty? Grey? Normal?

    Here is a picture:

Looks like she has chicken pox.

Does she smell any different? nope

Has she been to the vet? When either of mine has bumpies all over, it's generally a skin infection. That looks sore, poor girl.

Callie is REALLY good at IDing stuff based on photos.

I have noticed that she doesnt bother them unless I crate her. She is laying on the floor passed out right now.

I know that one spot looks horrible. And it is driving me nuts. I made and appointment for Friday at the vet. Cant get her in sooner.

    The top picture isn't showing...

It is awfully hot. Is she maybe exersizing less and too energetic?  She's still a puppy, right? Hmmmm... I'm just throwing random things at you, LOL.

For the time being, maybe just give her a frozen Kong or something yummy to chew while she's in the crate... At least she'll chew THAT for a bit instead of her skin.

I can't see the pics but it *sounds* like either sarcops or a contact allergy.  But honestly sarcops -- and they can get them from wildlife (and altho it is catching often it will just stick with one animal).  Is anyone in the family scratching in sympathy or does anyone have a tiny red very scratchy rash anywhere?

When I say it can come from wildlife -- I mean coons, possum, squirrels, deer, fox or ANYTHING in your yard

Jennie I have added another walk to our days. We walk early in the morning 2 miles and late at night 2 miles. And we also go biking 2 miles a day.

She will be 2 in November.

Oh and she cares nothing for kongs anymore. No matter what I put in it. She isnt a food motivated dog.

Nope no one around here has rashes Callie. Actually I had a small rash on my arm a week ago that JJ thought was poison ivy/oak but it went away in a couple days after I made myself quit scratching it.

How are the mosquitoes where you are?  Here in VA, they are god awful.  They swarm the dogs in the back yard and if we stop moving for 3 seconds on our walks, they swarm us.  I've noticed a few bites on Indie's newly shaved belly but they don't seem to be bothering him.  Woobie has been itching more than he normally does but I haven't seen any bites.  I wonder if they could be regular old mosquito bites?  Is it safe to use hydrocortisone on dogs?  I wonder if there's something topical that could take the itch out without being a problem for her.

I think getting her checked out at the vet is a great idea but in the meantime, I think you could still give benadryl and it'll help. If she doesn't have an infection already, she will if she continues scratching herself. I give my 75 lb girl 75 mgs 2x a day, but if she's in distress, I up it to 100 mg and she does just fine. Have you tried bathing her in anything? If it's the crate that seems to be causing the problem, can you leave her out of it for now?

We talk about the tea solution for feet, but it might help to make some strong tea, let it cool and blot the itchy areas with it and see if it helps. Sorry, I have no idea what she might be dealing with, but it looks very uncomfortable.

The mosquitoes are horrible out here. They are huge too. But I dont see them bothering her. Just us humans. Could it be the "cant see um bugs?" Because they also are bad out here.

a small fine rash like that truly looks like sarcops -- AND the brief rash you had could so easily have been a temporary problem with them.

wildlife sarcops are like that -- it's not like dog sarcops where they are trying to breed long term in the skin.  they *try* (which can be whatt the pustules are) but they really prefer to go back to that particular host to 'breed' but they bite (it's the poison in their bite that causes the itch) to feed and get a 'bloodfeast' from the dog.

If you always let her out just before you crate her, and then she lies down and is only concentrating on how itchy she is she'll scratch incessantly.  The tearing out of clumps of hair and the small fine rash are pretty much hallmarks of sarcops.

wipe out the crate with clorox and spread a white sheet UNDER the crate so you can bleach that daily.  You could do Lyme Dip (vet item) ... or you could try giving Interceptor (or Ivomec might be a good investment at this point and you could then use it for the next 4 years as heartworm preventive -- Ivomec is about $50 a bottle).  If you treat and it causes the itch to stop (even for one day) you can often self-diagnose that way.

Then you gotta figure out where in your yard she's getting it -- likely some spot where a critter stops to scratch (like under a tree or something) and the dog is sniffing for coon poop.  (coon poop is even more of a delicacy than kitty tootsie rolls are)

Funny that you should mention this today, as I just talked with a friend today, who has allergy problems with her dog. She was telling me of a dog who belongs to a mutual friend that just came down with a horrible rash. Like her dog it came on very suddenly, which most allergies do. If I'm remembering correctly, dogs allergies often come out as a skin problem and it does not necessarily have to be contact type. I would as someone else suggested at least ask the vet about benadryl and if that doesn't relieve it explain to them how badly it is bothering your dog and then hopefully you can get her in sooner. I would think that most vets will take you when they realize the urgency.

Lillie gets Interceptor once a month for heartworms. She isnt due to get anymore till the 15th. Would it be ok to give it to her early?

What should I do to get her to leave the rash alone? Use the Lyme dip? Should I get her an e-collar also so she cant bite herself?

Im sorry I am asking so many questions.

Will the vet give me the Ivomec without seeing Lillie?

I'm not Callie but just suggesting a couple of things that I've gone thru with Willow.

Is it only around that private area and the tummy just around it?  Willow picks up all kinds of rashes in that area--could be allergy, could be due to urine, licking for whatever reason.

I just use wipes to clean the area and then apply some Panalog ointment-sometimes it's called Animax too.  It helps with the itch and usually clears it up pretty fast.  That's the only treatment the vet has ever done for her, no Benedryl or anything else.  I'd consider seeing the vet before you go those routes as they may not be necessary.

Now, I have the ointment on hand and always try it before anything else.

Also, you mentioned she only scratches when in her crate.  From what I've been told about mange she would be itching no matter where she was.  Not saying it's not that though.
