I can't see Benny's before pictures, but he sure is a cutie pie!! Pictures help a lot. If you have pictures of old haircuts that you liked (clear, full body shots), your groomer would probably be able to do well with that.

Oh, good!  I was wondering if a picture would help!  Thanks so much.  I now know to be extra extra specific!  ;)

A lady brought me a ginormous, matted, parti-colored Pom the other day with a few shots. One shot was of his face, one was a full body shot of his side, and the other was from behind. It was PERFECT, because I knew exactly what she wanted. She was really happy with the hair cut, and I was able to put detailed instructions into the computer for next time. Clear pictures usually work really, really well.

I agree that pictures are good; but is it really that wrong to assume a groomer should know what a properly groomed dog looks like?

If you have matted Pom well thats a whole other issues b/c that shows the owner never brushes the thing; and that's just wrong so I don't blame them if they get shaved and what not.

But pictures of Poms all over the internet clearly don't look shaved so even if you've never done a Pom in your whole life why the heck would anyone shave one... that's what I'm wondering...

Pass the word on that you don't use a shaver on a Pom... I use scissors, thinning scissors, and a thinning comb... and even with those you have to be very careful. All the groomers need to educate the bad groomers! haha

It depends on what people want.  Most people just have pets.  Besides dog shows, I have never seen a properly groomed, skirted Cocker Spaniel, but I know lots of people with pet Cockers who want them shaved when they are groomed.  Same with Shih Tzus.  To many people, shaving the dog almost to the skin is the proper groom because they are pets, so they go in every few months and get shaved down.  That's why it's important to specify exactly what you want.  If a groomer sent my mother-in-laws Cocker back with a nice skirt and only trimmed down the top, she'd send him back to get shaved.

Really good point... I ran into a guy at PetSmart one day and he was like "oh is that a Pom" and I told him yes and he replied "yeah I have one too... but its naked... I hate its hair I wish it didn't have hair so we shave him once a month" this bothered me though b/c if your going to shave your dog... why did you get a dog with long hair...?! I was a little blunt and said "well I guess you should have gotten a different dog then!" lol he gave me this look and a pause but then actually replied "yeah I guess your actually right... probably won't get one next time" I told him to get a Chihuahua :o)

The part I don't get is "because they are Pets." Kayla is my Pet but I don't want her shaved; my favorite this about her is the long hair, I brush it all the time for fun. My next Pom baby will be a show Pom so I'll be even MORE picky which makes sense... but Pet = Shaved... I don't get that part though...?

I don't see why it matters.  It doesn't hurt the dog or affect their health.  My in-laws Cocker doesn't show or hunt.  Having a long skirt would just make a big mess.  They also have to watch his weight and his skin for allergy problems.  A show trim just makes that more difficult.  If they like the size and the temperament of a certain breed, I don't really care how they have it trimmed.  I'd rather have the hair shaved than ignored and get all matted.

I do things to my hair based on function.  When I go on a two week "outdoors" vacation, I get my hair cut short so it's simply to manage.  If I'm going to be in a wedding, I grow it out for a few months and get nice layers and face framing.  It's just hair.

Good point :o) thanks. Yeah I was just always wondering then why not just get a short haired breed? Temperament makes sense now

They're just pets. I'll groom a pet dog ANY way you want it, as long as it isn't going to harm the dog. I do hair cuts that *I* consider ugly, all the time. I keep my terrier shaved just about bald (which I happen to like). I can't stand cocker clips on dogs with bad coats (show cockers are beautiful, and a totally different story), but I did one, today. I don't groom based on breed standard, or personal preference. I groom how I'm told to groom. Grooming is a service industry. It is not standardized, in any way. 99% of the dogs that I groom don't even have correct coat.

this may be your problem, not only are you not being specific enough, but manty groomers just dont know what to do with dogs like this when they get a haircut b/c every style looks bad. if you do a anything above a 7, the cut is uneven, and also entails more work for the groomer.

Once you have removed blown undercoat, you can leave a smooth trim with much more length than a #7.  You can use a long snap on comb in reverse, some groomers will do a full scissor trim on Poms.  It looks fabulous!  You can also create a very tasteful lion trim on a Pom, with shaved hind quarters and a scissored mane.  You can do much more than just shave a Pom.

Would this be considered "show dog quality"?  Like cutting a bichon with just scissors, no shave?

No, these are all lower-maintenance PET trims.  You might do some light "shaping"with shears, but never a full-scissor trim (like on a Poodle, Bichon, PWD, etc.).

NOPE this is how you are SUPPOSE to cut a Pom... show Pom hair never gets cut, you use a thinning brush

Thinning brush?  I've never heard of such a thing.  What is it, and what does it do?

Oh, I'm so sorry! I know in a few days he'll look real cute! He's such a cutie. The third picture looks real cute!

Maybe this will make you feel better... One time the clippers stopped working 1/2 way through the cut (I do Mia myself) and I had to cut the rest with scissors! Check it out!

First - hehe Mia looks so adoreable!!!  She looks like a new kind of ridgeback!!  So cute!!!!!

I am sorry about what they did to Benny.  He still looks really cute though, but I too would be furious, especially in the winter!  I hope it grows back quickly
