I hate his new haircut! (Pics Added)

I took Benny in today for his bimonthly cut.  We go to Petsmart since I work there part time and I get a small discount.  I never request anyone because I don't mind who cuts him and I like different people to handle him.  He was ready in 45 minutes which is the fastest they've ever had him done (they weren't too busy).

When I picked him up he came out and he was naked!!!  Well, except his tail and his head (so a lion cut).  I had told the girl to cut him short (I like to keep him short so we have less visits to the groomer).  I typically bathe him in between and brush him and all that so he stays nice looking.  But anyway, he was naked!  I told her that the length they usually cut him was in the computer and I like him cut fairly short.  I guess this is technically my fault; I should have been more specific.  But I am so upset with this haircut.  Today it was only about 13 degrees out and I feel so bad for him.  Why on earth would I want him shaved in this weather!?  He is only 10 pounds.  I did tell her that wasn't exactly what I had wanted and said that the length on his head is what I meant, but I tipped her and we left.

Well, now I know.  I will request a particular person from now on and I will be as specific as possible!  We'll just be embarrassed in training for a little while...  I got him this cut this past summer and I HATED it and swore I would never get it again...and here it is, the middle of winter and my poor poor baby will be freezing.

I will get some pics up in a few minutes...Embarrassed

Most of us who get dogs groomed have really specfic preferences.  I have a groomer I found after LONG trials and it's her or NO buddy.  I go on and on about exactly what I want.

For me, it's not about how it looks -- it's about Billy's skin, what he needs at a particular time and if he's sore anywhere.  I've been burned too many times and I'm SO specific it's disgusting (me?  Go on and on verbally?  WHO'D HAVE THOT!! *grin*)

Next time don't hesitate to say what you want.  And I'd have them put notes in the computer NEVER to do a 'lion cut' again.

You are right Callie, and since I work there I can just go into the computer myself and fix it up!  :)

awe..  He is still so cute!!  I understand why you wouldn't want his in the winter.  Buy a sweater and remember it will grow back quickly!!   One time I brought my Gordon Setter (now at the bridge) for his bi-yearly grooming and they cut his ears like a page boy.  I hated it!!  His ear were so beautiful and I couldn't understand why they would do that, no one every cut his ears before.  But it took some time but grew out and I was very upfront after that, dont cut his ears!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I know in a few days he'll look real cute! He's such a cutie. The third picture looks real cute!

Maybe this will make you feel better... One time the clippers stopped working 1/2 way through the cut (I do Mia myself) and I had to cut the rest with scissors! Check it out!

Oh my! I passionately love to hand-scissor Bichons and Poodles, and seeing that is REALLY painful, LOL!Ick!\

In all seriousness, "short" means anything and everything these days.  I ask people how much coat they want left, and they act and look so clueless!  Many times, they will say to me "how much does he have now?"  I feel so stupid telling them, why can't they tell themselves?  Then they say to "take half of it off".  Or sooooooo much worse "I trust you, do whatever you think is best".  AAAAGH!

    Awww, poor Mia!!

And this is my problem, I just don't know how to word what I want.  Just really shorter than he is, but not too little taken off that I have to come back in just a few short weeks...

hopefully i can help you out a little bit. first off, groomers cant read your mind. if all you say is short, then they will go short. however, groomers should know that most dog owners have no idea what blade lengths even are. when i worked for petco, we had a chart on the front desk that had all the blade numbers wiith drawings of how long the hair is when you use that blade. whenever someone said to me what you said to the groomer, i would just point to that and say pick one. we also kept a log of everytime a certain pet was groomed, and what type of cut it was, blade length, any special instructions. petsmart should do the same thing. then all you have to say is whatever was done last time.

the second thing is that your problem may be that you have a pomeranian. i had one lady come to me with a pom for a haircut once, i asked what she wanted, and she said whatever pomeranians get. she said she loved what her old groomer did, but she doesnt know what it was, the lady just knew what to do to a pomeranian. i had one hell of a time explaining to her that there is no haircut for a pomeranian, since they are suppossed to ever be clipped. this may be your problem, not only are you not being specific enough, but manty groomers just dont know what to do with dogs like this when they get a haircut b/c every style looks bad. if you do a anything above a 7, the cut is uneven, and also entails more work for the groomer. have any of your groomers talked to you about the effects of long term haircuts on dogs like this?

OMG, those poor doggies.....they are still cute, but when I saw Carla's dog I had to laugh......please, don't tell your doggie that.....Embarrassed

    OMG THEY SHAVED YOUR POM!!!!!!!!

PETCO did that to Kayla and I threatened to SUE! (almost did it too, but my BF told me I was being crazy) so instead I flipped out and they gave me a full refund plus $50 gift card! haha!

YOU DO NOT SHAVE A POM! If you shave Poms their hair will NEVER EVER grow back the same...

ugghhhh that makes me sooooo mad and it's not even my dog!!

Give Benny a hug or me :o(

Nope.  I have no idea about the long term haircuts on poms.  I'm not keeping him for showing or anything.  I just want him kept short because it's just easier to care for.  He loves to play outside: in the snow, in the dirt, in the water...it is just easier for us both to keep his coat at a manageable length.  But I certainly didn't want him shaved.  He has been getting haircuts since he was a puppy, before I even had him (I just got him in April).  All I wanted was what I had before.

Today I went in and talked to the manager because my manager saw him and was pretty upset with the haircut (she has known him for a long time).  He apologized and said that the next cut would be 1/2 off, so I am happy with that!  Apparently last time they hadn't put it into the computer so it was just some miscommunication.  Now we just have to wait for it to grow back and try to stay warm.

The best thing about hair is that it always grows backSmile I can sympathize though, as with my first yorkie I took him in for a groom, with my usual 'don't trim the topknot' instructions, and I picked up a yorkie with bangs!  Surprise

He'll do fine in the winter, many dogs are kept in haircuts all year round and do fine. Jules, my Yorkie, has a short cut all yearSmile And he doesn't even have an undercoatStick out tongue

Just be extra specific next time. I'm sure groomers get tired of my 'noooo touching the topknot' speechStick out tongue

I called around to multiple groomers and told them what PETCO did and they were shocked! If you are a groomer you need to know what the different types of cuts for dogs are. #1 rule YOU DONT SHAVE A POMERANIAN DUH!!! People go in there expecting you GROOMERS to know that, psh its your freaking job not ours...

Yes groomers can't read minds but jesus who the heck shaves a POM!! That's like "hi yes I deserve to be fired" :o)

I cut my own dogs hair now thank you verrrrry much. Took me about one time to figure it out... doesn't take much brains. Plus I actually enjoy doing it because I can have to perfect just the way I like it!!

Question... I wonder why people don't do it themselves more often??? expecially if you have a little toy dog! its so easy :o)

screw groomers... $40 for what? a crappy job... no thanks :o)

P.S. YOU DO NOT USE A TOOL ON POMS. NO SHAVER NO NOTHING. YOU USE GOOD OL' FASHION CLIPPERS! :o

    • Gold Top Dog

Actually, you aren't supposed to use ANY tool, other than something to neaten up an outline, on a Pom according to the standard. But that's for show dogs. A pet Pom can be groomed in any number of ways, depending on what the owner desires.  Not all double coated breeds grow their coats back oddly. My Chow was shaved due to a skin issue and his coat grew back fully, with no problem whatsoever. It's still full and lovely and you'd never know that he was once short. It is true that some won't grow back properly, but if an owner is going to keep it trimmed year round, it doesn't really matter much. It all depends on owner preference, I don't think the dogs mind much at all

I shave Poms all the time, and you can't sue a groomer. You signed a release when you dropped your dog offWink

I can't see Benny's before pictures, but he sure is a cutie pie!! Pictures help a lot. If you have pictures of old haircuts that you liked (clear, full body shots), your groomer would probably be able to do well with that.
