I think the vet should be able to tell if the uterus is infected...one way or another. Gee, if she is now eating, doesn't have a temperature, blood tests and other tests come out as normal, ex-rays or tests don't show infection,,,, why do we come up with infected uterus?????? Okay, I may not know what I'm talking about but why do we think its an infected uterus if nothing shows it???? She SHOULD be spayed, there is no doubt about that. But unless its an infection in the uterus I think I would wait until she is strong again...she as been sick and she is trying to get better.
A word about the $900 surgery...when I got Bubby she was bleeding and Pyometra was mentioned,,, (that might be what your vet is thinking in fact) and the vet that I always took my other dogs to, and was going to take Bubby to, wouldn't even look at her. She said over the phone when I called in a panic that she does NOT DO PYOMETRA SPAYS,,, that I should take her to a specialist (who was really just a regular vet clinic except they do a lot in the reproduction line) and that it was going to cost me over $1000 for it. I did go to that clinic by accident, because as it turned out that is the clinic Bubby went to before I got her, and that vet was able to tell right away that she did NOT have pyo,,, and I was able to make an appointement for a regular spay for the next day or so. A word about cost,,,the bigger the dog the more expesive it will be for that spay or any surgery for that matter. But I do think its a wise choice to get a second opinion, if your vet THINKS it MIGHT be an infection but can't tell for sure.
I also think Glenda has a GREAT idea about the pre-op work and take the results with you.
