Dog not eating.

    Dog not eating.

My great dane Athena isn't as active as normal and will not eat.  She does drink so  but not a lot.  Maybe i'm just freaking out because its the only meal she hasn't eaten so far.  She was outside eating some grass so doesn't that mean her stomach is upset?  I did notice in the corner of her crate that there was a stuffed animal that seemed to have been thrown up.  I'm glad it came out but could that be what is making her sick?

Was it only one?  If so, I would wait and see tomorrow what happens... maybe she had an upset tummy and just wasnt hungry.  Pumpkin or yogurt is good for an upset tummy, but not sure if thats whats going on.

I tried giving her some pumpkin, but she wouldn't eat it.  She threw up again but this time with grass in it.  So maybe I will just wait till tomorrow morning and see if she eats.

And yes it was only one but a small one.  I always thought it was cute that she liked this little toy but I guess thats over with now no more little toys for her.

Oh I ment only 1 meal that she missed?  Kayla threw up a whole one of those birthday stuffed bones before... completely in tact, crazy girl.

I guess all you can do in the mean time is wait and see if she eats in the morning, really just use your best mommy judgement on how she looks and whether or not you need to bring her in, I know sometimes its so hard to tell if its nothing or not.

    Shes acting normal otherwise?

Yea it's only one meal that she missed.  She is usually crazy and bouncing off the walls but now she isn't.  But DH reminded me she has done the whole grass eating thing and not eating before.  And the next day she was just fine.  She will only drink a few sips here and there, but doesn't see dehydrated.  She just is laying around looking all sad but I guess her stomach is bothering her.  I know when my stomach hurts I just want to lay and bed like she is doing now.  I keep going in and checking on her and bring her some more water to drink.  I just worry about my babies when they are sick because I notice the slightest  difference in them.  So I will wait it out and see if she will eat in the morning.  Should I just give her a small amount of food in the morning or give her the usual 2 1/2 cups?

Pug, Is she vomiting after she is drinking water?

If she is, take her water away and offer her very minimal water throughout the day.

    Have you taken her temp?
Are you sure all of the stuffed toy was tossed back up? Those would be my concerns.
    Keep us posted please.

I just went through this with Sheba.  One of two things immediately come to mind as the likely cause.....she either got really upset at my being gone for something like 17 hours on Tuesday, OR she dug up the chicken neck that she'd buried and ate it.  But, it could have been something else.

When she did eat, a tiny bit to please me, it came right back up.  This lasted for TWO days and she clearly did NOT feel good.  Her vet is on vacation and while I could have taken her to one of the others in the practice, THEY wanted me to wait and see.  On the second evening she ate a few bites of chicken and rice and on the third morning she ate what I offered...less than she normally gets but I didn't want tostress her tummy.  I gave her three small meals of chicken and rice yesterday and by last nite she was ready for a "real meal".  Yesterday, she clearly FELT better and was playing with Tyler.

But, Sheba is a big girl (gsd) and I know her well enough to guage what's going on with her.  With it being the weekend, I'd take the dog into the vet, just to be safe...and to save on an emergency vet visit tommorow.

    Did she eat today?

She is drinking more and hasn't thrown up yet today, but she still hasn't eaten anything.

Nope I was wrong right after i posted she threw up again.  Not to sound gross but it's yellow with what looks to be partially digested grass or dirt.   It happened right after she drink a lot of water so i think I'll just have to give her little bits like i did last night.  Just ran out of paper towels so i sent DH to go get some just in case it happens again.  What about Pepto-Bismol that controls vomiting should i give her some of that?

I've given my dogs Pepto Bismol a lot of times. BUT be carefull, I havent had a dog that like it yet, and someone shook pink stuff all over me, the walls, floor and herself!
I'd be worried that there was still some stuffed animal left in her,,causing a blockage of some sort.  I wouldn't wait toooo long before getting her checked by the vet!

Yea I found out the Pepto Bismol thing the hard way.  We were laughing cause she had pink lips.  I know all the stuffed animal came out because it was a small toy and it was all there.  I don't know why she would just eat it but it was all there when i found it in her cage.  She started to follow me around the house and hasn't thrown up since.  I'll give her till tomorrow to feel better and if she isn't 100% by Monday I will take her to the vet.  Do you think a bath will help her feel better or wait till she is back to normal? I dont want to stress her out when she is sick.  I've been giving her a small bowl of water every hour or so.  And it seems to help.  I am known for taking the dogs to the vet for just little things that I really didn't have to worry about and its taking all my self control not to take her in but it does seem that she has improved some.

Um, if she ingested part of the toy, she could have a blockage.  Has she had a normal bowel movement?  Did you piece the toy together to see if it's all there?
You may want to call your vet and see if they would like to see her..  I

She stopped throwing up and is drinking, but still hasn't eaten anything so she is going to the vet tomorrow.  I know all the toy came out because it was whole when i found it.  Hopefully the vet can find out what is going on with my little girl.  She looks so sad just sitting on the couch.

So besides eating her toy,,has she done anything different? Had she started on heartworm pills?  Has she gotten any new vaccinations or medications? Had you changed her food at all?      I worry about that blockage also.   I belong to a Dane board, and one of the families there just lost their champion Dane to blockage.  He ate a sock and no one new it until he threw it up, and had the runs. Turns out it was wrapped around his intestines and stragled them,,,, and he went into shock and couldn't be saved.    I know you said you found the whole toy, I wonder if its possible that she got something else and ate it also?    Good luck!  I 'm glad your taking her to the vet tomorrow.   My sons Dane Oliver started throwing up not long after his vaccination or HW.. or both,,(can't remember) and it was a long long time before he got better.
