    JJ has frito feet

Alright everyone…I know there has been multiple threads here that mention that their dog smells like fritos (most recently poor Miss Willow had a few problems with the frito smell. [&o]

Last night DH said “JJ#%92s feet smell like fritos”…sure enough I smelled them and 1 of his paws smells like corn chips. I tried looking under the threads on i-dog and on the internet and what I see is one of the 2 following things:

    1)      It is “normal” for some dogs feet to smell that way
    2)      It is too much yeast

SO what are everyone#%92s thoughts…should I wash his feet with some sort of special medicated shampoo…get him to the vet…ignore it???

If possible I would like to try some “home” stuff before taking him to the vet.  His feet don#%92t seem to bother him at all…the 1 just smells weird.

    Thanks in advance![8D]

Teenie smells very much like Fritos, right now. I drove an hour, each way, this morning, for a visit with a holistic vet, and a private training session. She's gotten very, very violent with Emma, lately.

Dogs have sweat glands in their feet. For Teenie, the reason she's smelling so strongly is that she's been stressed out lately. Driving her so far, meeting new people, seeing cats and dogs, and dealing with a pretty intense training session have her even more stressed. Her feet are sweaty[;)] I'll give her a bath, this afternoon, and she'll smell brand new.

Why on earth would you want to be rid of the frito feet smell???
I may be nutso but I just love the smell, could sniff them feeties 24/7. 2 of my 5 have what we call popcorn feet and someone here is always a-sniffin them, smell good enough to eat.
Doesn't anyone else here like the smell or I am left standing(sniffin) alone[;)]

I'm sorry you are having puppy wars. For a moment I thought you had said that the trainer was being violent to Emma. I have to edit my post because after reading your post again I found I had misinterpreted it and got my feathers ruffeled for the wrong reason. Hope things get under control for you.

Coonhound owners pretty much universally report their dogs smelling like Fritos. I can't think that it's a diet thing, since everyone does not feed the same, or even remotely the same, food. I think this is just the "hound smell" that everyone talks about.

If you don't see any dampness or other problems on the feet and he's not licking them or otherwise seeming bothered, I wouldn't do a thing.  I think the smell, just like with humans, varies for many different reason and isn't necessarily an indication that there's a problem.  Sassy's had, and currently has, yeast infections on her feet and there isn't any smell at all, so I just wouldn't use that as a guideline.  I also think that sometimes when we start tinkering with things, we create a problem when there wasn't one in the first place.  Make sense?

Ella has frito feet. We just bathed her 2 days ago and in a day or two she'll smell like fritos.
I asked the vet about it, and as it has already been stated, dogs sweat through their feet. It happens.
We just call her our frito dog!

I think if it's just the feet it's no big deal.  It's when the whole body or belly areas start with it that it could mean yeast or some other issue.

I dont know,,,this was discussed on another forum that I freqent...and here is what one poster stated:

Hate to break it to you, but my Science teacher and I pieced together this theory when we were talking about popcorn/Frito feet and... something else...

In walking dogs, especially large, unaltered males who would hike up their legs on every passing vertical object and let out Lake Michigan, you start to notice a particular odor.  It smells somewhat like popcorn.  It's urine.  Small traces of urea are excreted by sweat glands...

...which dogs only have in their feet...

mmmmmm. . .I don't know about it being urine.  Willow has it on and off and she's a spayed female.

Bubblegum has it ALWAYS and she is also spayed.
I actually took her out last week and just washed her legs and feet,,,,with the hose, warm water and shampoo...just to get rid of the smell. She curls up in such a big ball (probably from her old days when she lived in a crate in the basement) and tucks her nose under her feet so she ends up having her face smell like her feet...YUK!  Well it took about less than a day to get the frito smell back again!

Dyan- JJ likes to curl up that way too...sorry you went through all the trouble of leg and feet washing only to get it back so soon!  JJ's feet ddon't smell as strong today..but his legs are starting to smell like bully sticks since he holds them with his legs...YUCK [:'(].  Looks like I will be bathing them both soon.
