How often do you bathe your dog?

How often do you bathe your dog?  What shampoo do you use?  Do you use any conditioner?  Does anyone use detangler?  Does anyone use any spray on coat conditioner with sunscreen? What do you consider is bathing too much?  What are your favorite tips and tricks with washing and keeping your dog looking its best?  Is it best to trim nails after a bath?

Zoe is short haired and black so I don't "see" dirt on her.  I wash her when she smells.  Sometimes we use a wet "ready bath" cloth my bf sells if we don't feel like doing an all out bath.  When I do a real bath (last night was the first time in probably 2 mths.) I use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo.

I had been bathing Simba twice a week because of his skin problems, with a product called sporal D. His skin is fine now so I have slowed down to once a month , havent found a shampoo I really like yet or one that is good at keeping his doggy smell at bay.

At the moment im using Johnsons puppy shampoo but wouldnt recommend it!!!

I have heard Oatmeal shampoo is supposed to be good so might give it a try [;)]

The Border Collies get bathed two or three times a year. They have these fantastic teflon coats, and stuff just falls right off of them. They typically only get baths if they roll in something abominably stinky (like fox poo).

The Papillon gets bathed every two weeks or so, sometimes more, sometimes less. He goes to the groomers about every 6 weeks. Ginger doesn't get bathed by me, but goes to the groomers about every 2 months.

I just use oatmeal and baking soda shampoo when I bathe them.

My Chihuahua and Dalmation/Lab mix get a bath about every 3 months. My lab mix loves to go outside and play and dig in the dirt and all that fun stuff. He is white though and you can see the dirt on him after a while.

My Maltese gets a bath every two weeks. He gets filthy and he turns grey if you dont bathe him lol.

I use Lambert Kay puppy shampoo on all of them but on the maltese I also use Lambert Kay creme rinse. After I take him out of the tub I pat him dry and then put some Paul Mitchell leave in conditioner on him. If I dont, he will be hopelessly tangled.

I almost never bathe mine unless they've rolled in something very stinky and I can't stand to be in the same room with them.  Roxy rolls around a lot when she plays so she is often covered in mud.  I wait until she dries and then brush her real good.  Every now and again I might use a baby or pet wipe on them.  I don't bathe anymore than I need to.  I think it dries out the skin too much and removes essential oils from the coat.

I don't bathe my dogs unless they smell really bad, or they're covered in mud. In Max's case, it also has to be warm enough for this to be done outside, because he won't get in the shower. I get about half his body in the tub, but he won't stay in long enough for me to get him soapy, so I can only spray him with water. So, if he's really dirty or and it's cold out, I either use a wipe or a wet cloth on him, or doggie cologne. I always thought that stuff was ridiculous, but now I see a good purpose for it. Obviously, he gets washed more in the spring and summer than in the winter time. Millie hardly ever gets washed, because she doesn't go all the places that Max does, and she doesn't roll herself in crap the way he does, because she is a Doberman, and clearly she is too good for something like that. In the little over a year we've had her, I think she's been washed about 3 times. Max has probably been washed twice as much as her, and we got him 2 months later, so that's about 6 times over 11 months.
Edited to add that I usually use an oatmeal shampoo, I can't recall the brand name though. Currently i'm using whatever Oatmeal Shampoo I picked up when I went to the Dog.com store, so that narrows it down to all the oatmeal shampoos that dog.com carries. I don't use anything else on my dogs though, just that.

Every 4 to 6 weeks b/c she needs to be groomed that often (clippered) and that's easier to do after she's bathed. She doesn't get doggy smell or get very dirty so if it weren't for the grooming I probably would bathe her less often.

I have heard good things about #1 All Systems conditioner and also Chris Christensen products. I just ordered a small sample kit of CC productst to try. They both have websites if you want to check out their products (just google).

I bathe and fully groom mine every 2-3 weeks. I can't stand dirty dogs. I usually use an oatmeal shampoo on them and sometimes I use one specifically for black dogs on my black ones.

Blue gets a bath every 2 to 3 months. Now that I'm out of school and I really can't do it at work it's now 3 to 4 months. When it gets late fall or when ever the weather drops big time I stop bathing him. I made the mistake and bathed him to late in Winter. Poor Blue was shaking like a leaf all night long. Hard to blow dry a dog that hates being dried by a dryer. Will try to eat the dryer and bite you.

Only when they roll in something stinky with baby shampoo.

My pap goes to the groomer every 6 to 8 weeks.  I have bathed him myself a few times using oatmeal shampoo.  I have a leave in conditioner for dogs that I use on him when he gets mats behind his ears.

As you can see, everyone has a different opinion on this AND different dogs require different things as well.  now if 'looks' are important your answer is going to be different than a dog groomed for health issues or a dog that's a companion but not a show piece.

There really are no 'wrong' answers -- you do what works and there is no 'wrong' unless the dog can't tolerate it.

I've had lots of dogs with skin problems so frequent bathing can be a MUST -- like daily at times!  In those cases I make sure my rinse water has tea tree oil and/or lavender oil in it.

I don't ever use a dog 'conditioner' because typically they hold in dirt and they tend to be marketed more to the humans than good for the dogs.  When I say tea tree oil or lavender oil I mean the essential oils -- literaly 25 drops in a couple of gallons of water.  That does a great job of detangling too, and it prevents the skin from drying and it is great to prevent yeast/staph problems.

Oatmeal tends to stimulate the skin -- and you don't want to do that with skin problems, so I never use that.  I'm mostly going to use something very gentle like diluted baby shampoo or sometimes a medicated shampoo like benzoyl peroxide (for staph or problems like demodex).

To a great degree bathing has a lot to do with training.  if your dog hates a bath, try tossing treats in the tub before you start and rewarding good behavior.  It doesn't have to be an earth-shattering experience.

Essentially don't bathe more than you need to.  But that 'need' may be frequent or not frequent.  depends on you and your dog.

Well, Frazer doesn't really like bathes. But when he smells, or rolls in somehing outside, or both. It's not that often but in the Summer he get's fleas. We use warm water. We use Premium extra thick, green apple scent. It works really well. And it smells REALLY good. And for fleas and ticks we use Hartz Rid Flea 2 in 1 dog shampoo. Only time I spray is when he has fleas and in that case I use Bonanical  Flea and Tick spray. It works really well. I do not use conditioner and if you have good shampoo then you probaly don't really need conditioner but it depends on your dog, like if he has long, silk hair and is a toy dog like a maltesse then you might want conditioner but you really don't need it. And I start from the head and work back. It just always works out best that way. ALWAYS try to brush afterwords or the hair will get all messed up. As for nails I just do them when they get long. I don't know if they need to be wet. It always works without being wet, so when ever they look long you can trim them. And I would never bathe them more than every other week. My mom gave one of my dogs too many bathes and she was always trying to go in the water like when it rained she would get all muddy in the puddles because she liked the water and then she had to take a bath and it was terrible! Hope that helps you!
