Spay complications- need advice

    Spay complications- need advice

I rescued a 5year old min pin, layla, and she has become like my child. Right now I am very worried and probably over reacting, but it doesn't seem normal to me. Ok so let me back up, when i adopted her from the shelter she had a tumor on her breast that no one told me about and I took her to the vet for routine stuff and vet recommended spay and biopsy when she felt it, but first had to get her healthy. she was severely underweight and bad skin condition, allergies, etc. Hoarder had her and tons of other dogs and none were cared for. So took about a month and a half to get weight up and get all shots utd and work on other stuff. So this last friday she was spayed, and the next day took her back to be checked and vet said she looked good but gave her more pain meds(layla has extreme anxiety and gives the vets hell and is able to fight off many drugs and their effects) and some take homes and advised me to keep giving her the xanax she was already prescribed, and the pain meds were tramadol. Ok so sunday she is peeing every 5 minutes and barely going so the vet came to hospital on her day off and tested her and gave antibiotics even though urine looked negative, just in case. after the anti inflammatory pain shot she stopped peeing like that. Then sunday night she starts leaking reddish fluid from her incision , I may have fallen asleep for a few minutes and she sneaked and licked the incision, not sure though. It was only a few drops so I laid her down and kept an eye on her until morning and then it started really leaking so I took her straight to the vet and different vet was there and didn't even talk to me, sent her back out with a tech who said she's fine you just need to keep her calmer. I told them she only gets up to go pee and then I carry her out and in and she is on leash. They ignored me, so I took her home and continued keeping her calm but the fluid will not stop coming out everytime she even stretches a little or goes out to pee or rolls over. It seems excessive to me so I called the vet again and my vet told me to put that collar thing on her, but she hasn't been licking it, i have stayed up 2 nights to make sure of that, plus she goes bonkers when you put it on which makes the leaking worse. Is it possible they did something wrong and that's why they keep ignoring what I say or is this just a normal complication of a spay and i'm bugging them??? Also she was in heat when they spayed her and she is still bleeding from her vulva, not eating normally, i'm syringe feeding and watering, only pooped a little second day and hasn't since, but is peeing fine now, hasn't had a temperature as far as vet said, incision seems very tender just barely touching it makes her jump. Please help I am terrified!!!                       AmandaSad

I would find another vet and take her as soon as possible.

I'd seek another opinion. Dogs can have fluid leaking due to overdoing it with exercise or if they're licking the incision.  I'm very surprised that, since they had you wait over a month before spaying her, that they would then spay her while in heat. Things are very swollen and oozy in there during a heat cycle and most vets avoid spaying during a cycle unless it is an emergency

Trust your instincts!!!  I would have her checked at a different vet clinic.  She should not still be bleeding.

The uterus is swollen and full of blood during a heat cycle.  Waiting until 3 months after a heat allows the uterus to contract to its smallest size and makes a spay safer (less likely to cause excess blood loss).

Did they explain that?  Did they charge you a higher fee for spaying a female in heat (maybe without telling you the fee was higher)?

Many years ago before I knew better, I let a vet spay my terrier right after she finished a heat cycle.  There was no excess blood loss (that I am aware of), but the timing caused a false pregnancy and scared me to death.  I haven't completely trusted a vet since that time.

The vet told me about her being in heat and the possible complications, but she advised to go ahead with it because she thought it was important to get the biopsy of the tumor as soon as possible. I was scared, but this is one of the best vet clinics where I live and the senior vet there was the one actually doing the surgery. The vet told me today that the fluid is serous fluid or something like that and that due to Layla licking it even for the 30 minutes I fell asleep, that it will take 4 to 5 days to clear up as long as I keep her calm and prescribed a sedative. I have spent over 1000 in the last 2 months at this vet clinic and I will spend 1000 more if necessary but I just wanted to check and see if any of you had heard of this before I spent more money that I don't have. As long as she is laying still it doesn't leak, just when she moves and it just leaves spots all over my bed, but it is not pouring out. I have overreacted several times here recently with her, hence the 1000 in vet bills, so just wanted to make sure I wasn't being silly. Thanks

Good to hear that it is not actually blood!!

If you got a baby onesie and cut a tail hole, do you think she would wear it without getting too upset?

yes, sometimes a seeping leakage is normal after a spay, especially if the pet was in heat at the time of surgery. As long as it's not a bloody discharge, or a thicker infectious discharge, I would just let it be, especially since your vet is not concerned about it. keep the ecollar on her, she will adjust to it. if she's really having an issue with the collar, try a tshirt or something similar to keep her away from that incision. it will get itchy as it heals, and licking can lead to an infection. my bigger concern would be the lack of interest in food/water. have you talked to your vet about that? sometimes the medications given after can really upset their systems and cause a disinterest in food.

I'd put jammies on her -- yep, little kid's jammies.  Bottoms AND tops.  Put them on backwards (tag under the chin -- little boy's placket facing up so her tail can go thru that.  You'll have to take them off before she goes outside to pee but it will help keep her out of the stitches.  Have the shirt be a bit tight but it will actually calm her down.

Next -- start reading.  Get yourself a couple of GOOD dog first aid books.  The first I'd recommend is Giffen & Carlson's "Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook".  The next would be "The Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat".  Both you can get thru Amazon.  But they will help you be a bit more prepared for what's what ... and you'll at least have a source to look at for information.   It can be darned good at 3:00 a.m. to have a book to turn to!!

Good luck -- I agree with the others to find another vet.  One that will listen to you about whether or not the dog is licking.  She may need to be on antibiotics -- simply because pyometra can happen SO easily ANY time a dog is in heat and all it takes is for to have begun and they may not have caught it.  I'd be concerned too --

Just fwiw -- a 'big practice' or an "expensive" or "well known" one doesn't always mean it's good.  Frankly I've been to a good share of the millions of vets in the Orlando area and I drive 30 minutes away north to the guy I go to simply because HE IS GOOD.  He's all by him self but he's a darned good diagnostician.  It's taken me a while to find him -- but he's worth his weight in gold.  Keep looking -- you'll find one you can communicate with!!

Thank you all so much, I did put a onsie on her(I saw it on other posts on here) and she doesn't mind it a bit. she is on amoxicillin(will that work for the pyometra you were talking about), tramadol, and acepromazine. She is zonked out and not moving around which should help it heal. As for the food, she has been bad with eating from the day I got her, have had to homecook and even then she might go a day and a half without eating, she is eating a little bit of chicken noodle at this point(just maybe 5 or 6 bites) and I do think the medicines are making her tummy upset, I have been syringe feeding some wet food the vet gave me. And she is really picky with her water, she will only drink it from her water bowl in its normal spot(this has been a pain anytime we go anywhere) so unless I let her get up i would have to syringe feed the water too. She is a handful i know lol. So I'm definitely going to find a new vet, even if they are good, they are not listening to me which could be dangerous. It's good to hear other people agree. It's also good to hear that the fluid does happen sometimes. Also does anyone know how long she should continue to bleed from her vulva, it is kind of a brownish red at this point. Thanks!

also is there anything i can do to help her poop?

I'm taking her to a new vet today at 3pm. But the original vet offered to board her for free for a few days, I guess because they can tell I'm losing it a little bit. I'm a nervous wreck. But anyway, I'm not sure about that because it is not 24 hour so she will be alone some and that worries me. Has anyone done that before? Is it better for her to be there even if she is alone some? I just don't want anything to happen to her she is my baby, and I feel so bad for doing this to her.

    awright

also is there anything i can do to help her poop?

Has she been eating enough to have to poop? Most bitches are reticent to poop a few days to a week after spaying because it hurts to do so. Even males that have been neutered will avoid it for a bit. You can ensure she gets proper water intake and perhaps offer some canned pumpkin in small amts. Not too much because it can also cause diarreah if overused. It's one of those things that works both ways LOL.

Older dogs, tend to recover slower from surgery I have noticed. Puppies seem to be up and ready to roll the day after but the older ones...they tend to need more time. Be sure you are keeping the incision site clean and DRY...wipe down with Betadine every now and again. I had a bitch have a VERY bad reaction to a section...staph infection...the first sign was a foul, putrid odor so don't be afraid to use your nose.

If it were me, I wouldn't board her with the original vet for several reasons, including your concern that there isn't anyone there 24-7 (because she is having difficulties). It sounds like you've got a good plan in place today--see what the new vet says. Sending lots of positive vibes for a good appointment and a speedy recovery.  And, try not to beat yourself up--you did the best you could with the information you had. You're paying good attention to the problems that you've noticed, you're in tune with your pup and you're taking action to get her help to heal from her surgery-that's all GOOD!

She has pooped but just a bit and it was hard and she struggled to get it out. How much pumpkin? Yea I don't think boarding is a good idea, and i'm not. It doesn't smell, but it is impossible to keep dry because everytime i barely touch it she moves and it oozes more. I don't know what to do. I'm just terrified because she has stuff oozing out of the incision, her vagina and it keeps freaking me out, i'm constantly checking to make sure she's not bleeding to death. I'm new at the whole surgery thing and there is so many things happening that shouldn't be, and i'm just scared. vet said 7 -10 days before she stops bleeding her vulva, does that sound right? I've got her on antibiotics now, will that keep her from getting an infection?

None of my girls were spayed during or right after a season so I don't know on the bleeding from the vulva. I imagine there would certainly be SOME. Again...odor can tell you a lot...a putrid odor or fishy smell is cause for concern. I neutered one male at age 5 and his scro*tum was FULL of serum which leaked out in pretty marked amts. He was VERY sore and tender...I recall it being at least a full week or even two before the swelling went down...and the serum was absorbed by the body.

It is actually, a good thing it is escaping since the last thing you want is for it to become trapped under the skin where it can fester. I might actually be tempted were it me to apply a pressure bandage for a bit...that being non stick gauze pad wrapped over with ace bandages rather firmly...to aid in the exiting of the serum. But that's just me. My girl with the section infection wore bandages of one kind of another for about a month. But she DID, have an active infection.

Have you taken a temp? rectally...shouldn't be over 102. If it is that indicates infection..if there isn't your mind should be a little more at ease.
