Cherokee stuff...

    Cherokee stuff...

So the good news out of the last week or two is her pain has been very manageable. She really hasn't been showing any signs of pain, and of course I've been keeping her on the pain meds around the clock.

Bad news (and yeah, it's pretty bad) is she can't really stand or walk anymore. The only thing I can figure is the mass on her shoulder is pressing into her spine, because her back right leg (the tumor is on her left shoulder) is pretty much totally lame. I know she can still FEEL if I touch it or anything, but she seems to not have much control over it. She's spent the past few days just laying on my floor. I did carry her outside for a few hours in the afternoon the first couple days she was really having trouble, and one day she inexplicably ended up on the other side of the patio with her face in some plants (even though she seriously hadn't stood up by herself in days), but at this point I think carrying her stresses her out too much to make it worth it. She's currently peeing on pee pads (occasionally with some gentle bladder squeezing from me, lol. she reeeaaaally doesn't like this "peeing in the house" thing, but she won't pee outside either, so...).

I basically begged my vet to prescribe prednisone and see if that helps anything, but she's too worried about ulcers since Cherokee's been on Rimadyl to do it. I can't see how being unable to walk or being PTS is better than risking stomach ulcers, but?? I'll call her tomorrow (she's not there today) and ask again...

I really really can't take her into the vet all super stressed and terrified (and probably muzzled??) and have her euthanized, so I guess I'm gonna ask my vet about a house call if she won't try pred or it doesn't work. I don't know what to do... part of me wakes up every morning half-hoping she passed in her sleep, but obviously it's not gonna be that easy or painless for either one of us.

Sooo there's my sort of update. Sucks, but it is what it is I guess.

I'm so sorry Chelsea. You're in my prayers. *hugs*

Chelsea, I'm so sorry that you're having to deal with this.

I am fairly certain that the risk of ulcers is reduced if you hold off 24 hours from the last dose of Rimadyl to the first dose of prednisone.  You can also use something like Pepcid, or Prilosec to help prevent stomach issues.  You can give tramadol, or gabapentin in conjunction with pred, so you'll still be able to manage her pain during that 24 hours that she's not on rimadyl.

If for some reason, your vet won't make a house call, ask her to prescribe Valium or something similar that you can give Cherokee before taking her in.  That way she's a bit more relaxed.

Have you tried using a sling??  You can make one pretty easy.  Go to Home Depot and get a couple of pieces of dowel (round wooden rod) about 3/4" thick.  Usually they'll make at least 2 cuts for free on something.  You want them each to be about 2' long (actually you want it just a bit shorter than the space between Cherokee's front leg and back leg so you can pass it under her)

Take a decently strong towel -- doesn't have to be new, but you want it strong enough to hold her.  OR you can use new store-bought muslin.  That might even be easier.

If you use the towel either machine stitch or use a cool melt glue gun to fold the end of the towel over one of the dowels and hot glue it (literally make a 'hem' and shove the dowel thru it).

OR if you use the muslin just fold it to the right width and have it long enough to be double the length of that bath towel.  But rather than having to hem each end, just fold it so the ends overlap in the middle and run a thick line of cool melt glue up one end and mush the other end on top of it.

This way you can either take the towel off the dowels or the muslin off the dowels and WASH it if you gotta.

You thread the dowels thru the big "O" you've made and stretch them out and then put one end under Cherokee and you can hang onto the dowels over the top of her back to give her enough support to walk outside mostly under her own power.

I'm just trying to help you with a tool that may give you a bit more time if you think it's the right thing to do and that way you won't have to man-handle her.

Now ... when it comes time to have to help her over the Bridge ... you are going to want the vet to do a shot of valium ANYWAY.  Usually they give them enough valium to help her just go to sleep.  That way they don't get startled by the pink stuff (that feeling can make some dogs panic).

Seriously -- you may want to take a bit of valerian root *yourself*.  You do ***NOT*** want to just fall apart on Cherokee.  That can panic the dog and when a dog, like Cherokee, is as bonded to a human as you two are, it can upset them **so** much because YOU are upset that it makes it far far worse than it should be.

This should be a peaceful passage.  There are times when we humans need a little bit of help as well.  Getting some valium in the dog (it's stronger than just the herb valerian root -- same essential chemical composition b/c valium mimics valerian) will help HER relax and be ok with this and not be afraid.

This is the hard part Chelsea.  Let us help you any way we can.  *hugs* Callie

I gave Teenie several of Emma's valium tabs before I took her to be put to sleep. It helped, a lot.

((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))) I'm sorry that she's doing so poorly.

Have you tried using a sling??

A sling is a great idea; I love Callie's suggestion about how to make one but I've seen owners use a large towel without any handles attached.

Chelsea, I can't really tell you how sorry I am that you're losing Cherokee. You're in my prayers; {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}.

Thank you guys so much. I just wanted to let you all know that Cherokee has an appointment on Monday to "cross the bridge". I don't know when I'll be strong enough to be around here again after that, but since you guys have been so awesome through this, I wanted to tell everyone..

Thanks again. I'll be back at some point...

Chelsea, you are doing the hardest and most loving thing a dog owner can ever do for their best friend.  We know what Cherokee means to you and understand that it may be hard to be here for a while.  I'll be thinking of you and please feel free to contact any of us if you need to talk.  I've been thinking of you often lately and want to thank you for posting.  I know it must have been very hard to type your post.
