What is this?

Callie's right--the monistat (miconazole) cream works great.  Another thing that will help, and Wal Mart should carry it,  is Zeasorb powder---it's a miconazole based powder----it will tackle the yeast and will keep the area dry.  I do also like the tea tree oil, but find the miconazole creams and powders work better and provide faster relief.

Walmart should have aloe - DH uses it for his dry scalp and we always get a giant bottle there for cheap.  I think it's usually either in the sunscreen or body lotion areas.

But for something this sore make sure it's NOT a "lotion" -- you want 100% aloe.  Drinkable aloe is fine but make darned sure there isn't sugar or other ingredients in there -- it could worsen it.  There are tons of creams with aloe "in" them -- but they are NOT aloe.  I looked at the Wal-mart website and didn't find pure aloe -- but it may be something that some Wal-marts carry and others don't.

    It's probably a yeast infection

That was my first though, especially with the ear problems. What about adding yogurt to his diet? Callie? It's just what I've always read on the forum. My girls get Dannon Natural Fat Free Plain every morning. They each get about 2 TBSP, but I would adjust that based on dog size.

Yogurt would be fine ... but I don't do the same probiotic day in day out -- switch off occasionally to a whole different probiotic -- I don't give the same one for longer than 3 weeks or so without switching.  It **is** bacteria -- and the point is to balance, not to overwhelm.

I would consider having your vet do a skin scraping and/or biopsy.  Maska had something similar and some funky looking skin in various areas, plus a yeasty smell.  He's got some allergies, but we haven't opted for testing because it turns out that when they tested, they found an infection and gave my vet a nice list of the antibiotics that the infection is susceptible to.  His skin looks better already, although at some point, I may opt to do the testing.  Anyway, that area looks uncomfortable enough that I would be taking him to the vet.

I havent been able to go to wal-mart yet, but I did get some of that Monistat 7 at CVS, I asked them if they had Tea tree essential oil, but they didnt (I thought they would have it at CVS... I looked online and Wal-mart carries it, so I'll get some when I go there)

I did find some Aloe stuff that I already had here. Its "Aloe vera gel" Its not a cream its more clear-ish and gel like, not liquid. But the first ingredient is Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, water, and a few other things. I think its for sun burns mainly, it says "cooling" on the front. The "cooling" part sounds like it would help because it seems like it burns when hes been licking it. I havent put it on yet though, because I didnt know if it would be OK or not?

I got Selsun blue (the medicated one) Ive washed his spots with it twice so far (yesterday and today) and the spots seem to actually look a little bit lighter. They arnt so dark and red/irritated looking. I washed his feet with them too, because he has started getting the same thing between his toes again. I havent gotten the PJs for him, because once I put the stuff on it, it seems to stop the itching because he doesnt bother with it at all after. But I might just get them anyways for when Im not home, just incase. Im going to keep doing it every day, hopfully it will continue getting better. Ill post an updated pic of it soon.

That sounds like what we have got.  I used it topically on Will since birth, I believe it is completely safe.  Do you have a brand name, or can you describe the packet?

Did you ever find the cause/solution to this?

My dog developed the exact same thing this weekend however it seems to be much better today.

Curious as to what you figured out...
