What is this?

    What is this?

Bailey has their weird rash on the inside of his back legs.

Hes had them for a while. It was a couple years ago they came up, we had them looked at when I brought him to the vet, and he said they were from FLY BITES. ( I really do not like our vet, but there isnt any other one around here to switch to ) and that I should put Skin so soft stuff on there.. They are NOT fly bites... Im positive of that.

Then he went into the vet again, because his ears were getting really nasty and he kept itching them (infection/allergies) so I had to get some medicine for them. While we were there, I asked again about those spots. This time we got a different docter, and she said that it was a bacterial infection? She gave him antibiotics, he got them 2 times a day, every day, for 90 days. Didnt make even the tiniest difference.

They are not constantly like that. It seems to be related to his allergies. Ive noticed, when his ears are bothering him, he starts licking the spots. When they arnt bothering him, the spots fade, not completly they are still dark patches, but they dont look red and they dont irritate him. But when they are bothering him, he is constantly licking them. They havent been irritating him for a long time now, Im guesing because its winter and there are less things to effect his allergies? Recently hes started licking them again. His ears seem fine though, they dont seem to be bothering him at all.

Help? what is this? What should I do?

    owieeeeeee that's sore --

Aloe -- either right from the plant or liquid from a health store.  Apply topically and liberally.  (and 2-4 times a day if you can).

Chamomile tea -- brew it strong and refrigerate -- apply that -- it will soothe.

It looks yeasty to me -- I would probably try warm baths in Selsun Blue (the bottle with the red top -- the medicated one) and then massage a few drops of tea tree essential oil on JUST BEFORE the final rinse off.    It should take the sting out of it and help heal that up.

Does he lick it a lot??  It looks like it spreads -- because under the left leg it hasn't "closed" all the way yet??

the Aloe would be #1 with the baths as treatment every 3 days or so for a while.

Is he, by chance, a flank sucker.  When Bevo starts sucking really badly his flanks/groin looks very similar.  I usually have to use a bite-not collar on Bev until they heal so that he doesn't continue to make them worse.

Yea, he has been licking it often. But NO, it doesnt spread. I know it looks like the left leg hasnt "closed" in all the way, but thats just how it is. They started much smaller and eventually got bigger, but once they were there, thats how they stayed. Its looked the exact same way the whole time hes had them, just not red and itchy when they arnt bothering him, and they get red and itchy when they are bothering him, but no change in pattern.

I dont have any chamomile tea, Aloe or selsun blue... but I will try and get some. I know they have the selsun blue at wal mart... but not the Aloe, I dont know of any health store around here. Looks like I'll need to order some online...

Hes right next to me all the time when Im home, so I can keep him from licking it. But I have school all week (except for today obviously) so its impossible to stop him from licking it while im gone.

sorry Amanda I didnt see this before I replied.

No, I wouldnt call him a "flank sucker" He doesnt bother with them until they get red, and he will start licking them because they are itchy. But they DONT get red and itchy BECAUSE he is licking them.

The rubbing together of the areas probably doesn't help any.  That looks like where all the irritation is.  I wonder if there's any sort of powders (baby powder?) you can use for when he's active.  Have you even had the chafing (sp?) on the insides of your legs from walking/running/working?  I know when I get them I load the baby powder to the area to eliminate the moisture that helps to irritate it even more.  Does wonders for soothing also.

    Just a thought.

OH...Bailey sure looks cute in the first pic!  He looks like he's mad at you for showing us his privates!!!  LOL

Its a good idea, but sadly Ive already tried it, and it doesnt help at all. It doesnt seem to be an issue with rubbing, it will get worse whether hes been running outside all day, or napping on the bed.

I tried putting baby powder on it before, it didnt seem to help at all. It dried it for a bit, until he licked it again, but that was it, nothing else really. Tongue Tied

Poor Bailey! And poor you! IDK what that is, but Molson has major allergies and when his hotspots flair up it's always in that same area. I put a cone on Mo to keep him from licking/biting the area, and I try to keep it as clean and dry as I can. I used Goldbond Powder a few times and that seemed to cool it down and keep it dry, and I also used aloe (real aloe) and that seemed to help, too.

I was thinking of something like that too; Jessie's feet used to get that color from licking them before we got her allergies under control. Poor pup; I hope you figure it out soon.

I dont have any chamomile tea, Aloe or selsun blue...

Any grocery store will have chamomile - in the tea section, but get *just* plain old chamomile (not chamomile mint, or chamomile honey or something weird -- just plain old chamomile)

Aloe -- know anyone with an aloe plant?  They use it for burns -- I can tell you how to get the goo out of the leaves.  It's pretty easy.  Aloe plants are pretty common -- ask someone who has houseplants.

Ohhhhh, Aunt Callie can solve THIS one -- stop at either Good Will or some second hand store (or you can spring and get new at Wally-World -- a/k/a Wal-Mart) -- get a pair of little boy PJs -- put them on upside down so his tail goes thru the placket -- and then the top snaps to the bottoms (or at least get him the PJ bottoms)  Will keep him from getting "to" it so easily to lick it -- and often something like that will actually calm them down.  Just take it off him before he goes "out".

Also, MANY pictures. Very necessary for this treatment to work, and you must post them here.

K, Im going to go to wal mart this weekend and try to find everything.

No, I dont know anyone with an Aloe plant... are they expencive to buy?

He wears his jammies a lot now cause its cold, but the belly is open so he can go potty while wearing them so they wont help. I will look for some litlte boys jammies when I go to wally world. I'd have to get tops and bottoms that are attached or attach together, otherwise I know he'd get them off. Ive never left his jammies on him when Im not home, I have no idea if he will try and rip them off or not. Hopfully I can find cheap ones incase he destroys them. If he does I'll look into getting one of those no bite collars that goes around their neck to stop them from biting/licking.

So do you know what it is? Is it just some weird rash? Its just so weird how its always there but only bothers him sometimes. It is NOT raised up or bumpy or anything. Its smooth... just kind of red and raw looking when he licks it and obviously very itchy.

He also gets a similar issues between his toes. Not right now, they are fine now, but it seems to be in the summer I guess its just allergies that set it off. All the hair will fall out from between his toes (on top, between the pads on the bottom) and it will be red and slimy and oozy looking, and that bothers him a LOT. He is constantly licking hit feet when that happens and crys sometimes when hes licking them. I dont have a picture of it, but next time it flares up I'll make sure to take one.

I have tons of aloe plants. I live in RI --I'd be happy to mail you a few. They'd get there quickly. I can also send some bigger leaves to use right away. Just send a private message if you want some.

Buy a package of snaps -- and sew them on to snap the top to the bottom if you need to.  You could hot glue some velcro in place too.

It could easily be allergy based -- but it's likely yeasty.  Does he get kibble with grain in it?

It's probably a yeast infection ... the other thing that might help is a tiny bit of tea tree oil topically.  (not a cream with tea tree in it -- but pure tea tree oil and YES Wal-Mart carries it.)  That's a good anti-fungal.

The other thing that might help would be a ladies yeast cream like Monistat 7 or Gynelotrimin -- the cream would soothe and the miconazole will help the yeast.

But the licking exacerbates it a great deal (and makes it more moist which makes the problem worse)

Nope, No kibbles at all for Bailey. 100% BARF. He was 100000 X worse when he was on kibble years ago, he got ear infections constantly. Even when he was on raw at first he still had ear issues but someone recomended salmon oil and bee pollen supplements, and he hasnt had an ear infection since I started him on both of those (over a year)

I dont give him ANY grains at all. Only treats he can have are homemade dehydrated treats, freeze dried liver, or something similar. I can tell if hes had anything he shouldnt have (like if we go to the pet store and one of the workers gives him a milkbone...) becuase that night, or the next day his ears will be a little irritated.

Ok I'll get some of that too. I dont mean to sound cheap, like I can only get stuff at wal-mart. But since I dont have a car and I have to rely on other people to bring me its kind of the only place I know I'll be able to go. The pharmacy/health stores are not within walking distance of my house, but Wal-mart I know I can at least get a ride to.
