Potential Rimadyl reaction (Bugsy) - help!(UPDATE pg 2)

    • Gold Top Dog

I've found both liquid and tablet forms at Whole Foods and similar places.  There is a topical cream version, too, I believe.  I saw it at WF once but not the last time I checked.  We used the tablets here - just crushed them in between two plastic spoons (I think I've heard metal deactivates it) and sprinkled in a dish for the dogs to lick up - they like the taste.

eta - it's a human product so is usually in the first aid or supplement section, not pets.

Dyan it is fairly clear that the Rimadyl was causing the GI problem for Bugsy and mind you he doesn't typically have GI problems.

I am really glad you figured it out. I wasn't trying to say that there is no problems with Rimadyl...as I said regardless of what I see on an every day basis....I still wouldn't give it to Gibby unless 100% sure he needs it.........   Its just by what I read on the Internet...I expected to see a LOT of problems with the drug.

I very much appreciated your input - I HATE meds for me or my dog!  I was just trying to best for him and I do trust the surgeon tremendously.  It very well could have been exacerbated by having the treats with egg in them which set off his GI.  Who knows.  We are past the worst of the post op inflammation, past the poop issues, and thanks to Erin I have started him on the homeopathic Traumeel and am hopeful that keeps things going with his recovery.

I am doing all that I can to give this the best opportunity to get him back to form

Glad to be of help. :) Anything to help the Bugsy boy out and help keep him on the path to full recovery! I love reading about his antics!

TRAUMEEL ROCKS!!!  It is awesome stuff.

Now -- are you using the pellets?  or the Topical rub??  USE BOTH.  Traumeel also comes in an injectible (if you have a holistic vet -- mine will do a series of what she calls 'aquapuncture' -- Traumeel and Vit B given in tiny injections along acupuncture points.

The tablets you can give every single day with absolutely no problems at all.

It comes in both a cream and a gel for topical use.  They both work INCREDIBLY well topically -- it will help heal the surgical site (you can use it topically right on the scar tissue)

It is incredible stuff -- for ANY sort of inflammation (I use it for my arthritis as well).  Traumeel is good for any sort of "trauma" -- from bruising to surgery to arthritis and beyond.

A couple of years ago I fell on my own front stoop -- I was hurrying up the steps and tripped and literally fell ONTO my shoulder jamming it and my neck up against the doorstep.

I never even went into the house -- I simply picked myself up (knew I was hurt pretty bad actually but knew I hadn't broken anything) got in the car and drove straight to my acupuncturist.

She use the injectible form of Traumeel and gave me an injection both into my shoulder AND my neck.  (and some acupuncture as well).  But this is a shoulder I injured BADLY when I was in college (I dove off a 3 meter tower into the pool without having my thumbs locked and came really close to a mega dislocation -- and that was 37 years ago).  That shoulder is my weakest link and I knew I'd re-hurt it badly.

But amazingly enough -- the next day I was sore but not nearly in as much pain as I would normally have been.

Traumeel is just plain incredible stuff -- I'm glad Erin mentioned it because I forgot to.  It's something I use on myself and the dogs ALL the time.

I've got the tablets and I am just using the human adult dose (1 tab 3x per day).  DH & I both took one last night to see how it worked for us and we both reported feeling some relief (me shoulder him neck).

I also have heard of Zeel and someone recommended that too - any thoughts?

Zeel is for arthritis specifically.  All the Heel products are superb.

DO try the topical Traumeel -- it's amazing stuff.  The drawbacks to homeopathy are few -- they don't "last" in the body -- you have to take them frequently.  And you need to avoid caffeine (it messes with the absorption because of how it constricts blood vessels).  But the biggie is not taking with food.

It's also cumulative - in other words, one tablet really isn't going to "fix" something like a headache.  It simply prods the body to respond as it really *should* to the problem.

But they don't react with drugs, they don't have side-effects, and can be incredibly effective without killing your liver.

Try the oil I sent you on that shoulder and on his neck.  AND take the Traumeel.  That's how I do stuff -- often several small things like that give a ton of relief and no side effects to contend with.
