We helped Legend to pass on today. His health issues (arthritis, mainly, but also incontinence) had advanced, as had his cognitive issues. He was still very happy to see us, and enjoyed mealtimes, but in many ways, much of his former self was gone a lot of the time. He was no longer able to sit..could only lay down carefully or stand..and walking was often with his rear legs collapsing a bit. And his confusion was advancing..we found him several times in the middle of the night tangled in computer wires because he wandered under a desk. We couldn't confine him for his safety as he'd chew at doors or crates in a panic.
I've had him for nearly 13 years. He was my first Chow, and introduced me to a breed I now won't be without. He changed a lot of people's minds about what the breed can and should be temperament wise. He was calm and well mannered everywhere he went. His temperament was so steadfast with all that it was a change in that easygoing demeanor that tipped us off to a health issue in the first place.
In spite of some of the difficulties with his health and cognitive issues, he was always a happy guy and much loved.
He will be much missed
By Aesop especially, as he's now the only big guy in a sea of littles(not that he minds the littles)
Rest well love
