Forum "Moderation"

For those of you who missed it.....

From my personal stand point, not as a moderator, admin or any other "title" when you are passionate about something

No, I saw that. I posted because I have seen similar terminology used in places other than Jaime's post, which I completely agree with. As a one-time thing, I wouldn't have thought anyone would take offense to it...I certainly didn't.

I was merely making the point that I, like Edie, have seen that kind of language used many times, and can see how some people might find it disrespectful or otherwise questionable when it is said often. I also believe that respect between mods and members should go both ways, so if there are members who have an (I think) justifiable objection to that kind of terminology, I can see no reason why it wouldn't be possible to find some other way to say the same thing.

This works both ways... EVERYONE feels passion about something.  Not just a moderator, admin or any other "title".  [;)]

Kate, I understand where you're coming from and this is something we should discuss amongst ourselves.

Lani, you seem to have missed the point that Jaime was posting as an individual and NOT as a mod, etc.

Nope.. I got Jaime perfectly [:D]  ... there are other options here, as far as "missing points".

Alright. I can see both sides of the fence here. I do agree that condescending is not the way to go. You need to treat kids the way that you expect them to act, and the same goes with adults.

However, Jaime was posting in a non-official capicity, so let's realize that this whole exchange was noted by the mods, and move on to happier things!

    I like to help when I can.[:D]

I remember in times past where people took umbrage with a single word in a post of mine (I don't remember the word) and it conjured up their feelings on the word and the hash and re-hashing of the word took up a page of posts and I view the forum in the tree style.

Ricky Nelson sang "You can't please everyone so you got to please yourself," from the song, "Garden Party."

I wanted to be silly and gripe about people posting in different text colors but it really doesn't bother me, I just wanted to gripe like everyone else over something I see as not a big deal.

Now, if I could just figure out what to do wrong so that I can get my fingers smacked. It's difficult when I'm already "practically perfect in every way."

Ron, you used the word "umbrage" above.. and you know you've read too much Harry Potter, when you read it as "Umbridge" ... but then again, she's been on my mind a lot lately.
    • Gold Top Dog
Yeah, Ron, I would imagine that it would be tough being perfect. LOL.

I could slap your fingers just for fun, though. [sm=devil.gif]

OMG! I just about feel off my chair! Let me go with....hmmmm... If the shoe fits wear it.

Behavior is what happens, passion causes it.

The cost of being rude, abusive and down right nasty? Well you all know the answer. When you act in that capacity, condesending or not, you get reprimanded. To eliviatate that, follow the rules, plain and simple. Not just here on this forum but in any forum, class or job, it's all the same, why should one be different then the other..again, contributing, not in ANY formal capacity...random, worthless thoughts  [8D]

Many of you weren't here when Jim sold the forum and we took over, I was the red headed devil...

I was here...[:D]  You red headed devil you. [sm=devil.gif]

Hmm, the thought just occurred to me that you survived, as well as we did, by NOT going overboard in your moderation at a time when you could have simply gotten your undies in a twist and really conked some of the members a really big fat good red magic markie, forgive the pun.  (And, now look - your dog even has a fan club!)

I don't know Ron2.  I think if you tell your fire hydrant story again then that may be a violation of rule #6.  We will have to see.

Absolutely, Anne. I still say that it's scary for one person to make the decision as to who is being "mean" and who isn't. Reading words is hard work, for sure. Composition and how it's interpreted AND how it's composed is hard work.

The basics are needed--no name calling, swearing, threats--but when it comes to deciding who's "on topic" and who isn't, then I get scared because that sort of decision--the ones that reside around readind comprehension--are not being consistently made across all mods.
