    confused about PETA

I don't know much about PETA. I know they were invloved in getting the horse slaughter houses on the US closed with disastrous results, and no back-up plans or even foresight to deal with it. But having perused some aticles throughout this site, i have come up on some references to PETA wanting all private ownership of animnals to be done away with. SOmehow this doesn't make logical sense. WHo will own all the dogs, cats, horses, etc. Businesses? Julie

PETA *is* confusing and they have a very very **hidden** agenda that most people just don't get.

PETA really truly wants NO animals to be 'owned' at all -- no pets, no food animals, no animals in any sort of care at all.  They literally want it to be "illegal" to have a pet of any sort -- or to use animals for food for any reason.  It's pretty well disguised but that IS their aim.  You don't find that out easily and most of the high-profile folks they have advertising for them don't know that, nor do most of their 'members'.  But if you listen to the higher-ups it's pretty plain eventually.

Maybe they think all the dogs, cats and horses will revert to the wild.  Anyway, I don't care for extremists, even if they are animal welfare extremists.  So, when I decide each year where my charity dollars go, it isn't to them;-)

No one.  PETA believe that all animals are better off dead than being "enslaved" to humans, and thus would rather see all companion animals and food animals put to sleep than see them put in the care of people.

PETA are also closely affiliated with the Animal Liberation Front, which is viewed by the FBI (I think, or some other law enforcement agency) as a domestic terrorist organisation.

Actually, they do support rescue and adoption of presently living domestic animals, but they do not support the breeding of any new ones - not for companionship, food or otherwise.

only until those animals die -- literally allow domesticated animals to die by attrition.  It's pretty radical scarey stuff and most people just never really "get it" and Peta is really sneaky about not being open with their true agenda.

BTW, if you donate to the United Way, a portion of your donation may be making it's way to PETA.

"In Virginia, the home state of PETA, in 2004, PETA adopted out 361 animals, and euthanized 2,278, according to their records. (2)  Those figures aren’t good.  That means that they euthanized 86.3% of their animals and only adopted out 13.7%.  These figures come directly from PETA’s Annual Report and from their 2004 Tax Return."

Sorry but that doesn't sound to me like an organisation that supports rescue and adoption.

Julie I want to reassure you that it is not uncommon to worry about weather you are "getting it" about Peta. They spend a Fortune in Marketing, spinning and obtaining celebrities to wander about petting turkeys on Thanksgiving and preaching kindness and vegan thinking ... But in reality they are a very insidious group. While telling you how deeply they value animals they are a direct cause of death for many of the animals who come into their hands. When the group very first began they seemed to seriously want nothing but the best for animals. They felt the slaughterhouses and  puppy millers would destroy the dynamic of the companion animal and even the food stock animal. Then some how they became really perverted.

I was still waffling until they turned my young male lose at a dog show thousands of miles from my home leaving me a note berating me for being a ruthless and selfish person for showing the dog... he was within 200 feet of a freeway..... the note assured me he would be better off running free and wild.. here was nearly 100 pounds of sheer muscle that was terrified. Not simply opening the crate they battered at the sided until they could force a bolt then and only then did they leave the note telling me it was his choice and if he went o the freeway it was his way of ending my dominion over him.

What.. The .. @&#** ?     Seriously .         Better off dead and or maimed. Then comforted, cosseted and adored?   Better off in Pieces on the highway then running in lure coursing trials , conditioned carefully and fed better than I ate..... They let over 1/2 dozen dogs loose. 4 were gotten back. the others vanished or died that day. They did not face me with the opinion. They did not argue or even simply steal my boy. They felt strongly dead was okay .

When Katrina hit Peta was not there. Same with Ivan, Charlie and several others that year.  When I hear a celeb like Emily Deschantel claim only Vegans understand the natural balance and Peta deserves our money and support I want to weep since I liked Bones a LOT. Thankfully her co stars are not fooled and do not advocate the same blindly idiotic thinking.

IT is not wrong that you are wondering. That simply makes you smart enough and caring enough to make a difference in the world.  It is the blindly accepting of ANYTHING that are dangerous.  And having celebs and spin doctors tell you what to think is good enough for far too many people today.

Thank you for asking, that took guts,  considering how vehement all of us can be about our passions it was a risk someone would lash out rather than try to answer because of the frustration that is pervasive when dealing with an entity like Peta...

Unless they are pit bulls--they would rather see then exterminated rather than adopted.

I wasn't afraid to ask becasue I don't support them either. I thought they were out there to start with. I just didn't know just HOW out there they really were, and the places I had heard them mentioned just hinted at their extreme weirdness.

That is really terrible about your dog. I hope he was recovered safe and sound. I would hope someone as prosecuted over that.

I don't give through United Way not because I don't donate money but because I like to have the choice as to where it goes. AT my old job, they would send forms out asking for 100% paticipation and there wouldn't be anywhere to decline giving to United Way. There were still a lot of us who wrote in a decline to participate.

I used to think I was an animal rights activist because I cared about animals, now I know i am not one, maybe only because groups like this give it a bad name.

I hope no one here got the impresssion that I supported or ever supported them. I do not. I was glad to get the full scoop, though. Julie

A lot of people feel this way and a lot are suckered into supporting groups like PETA and HSUS because they want to "help animals". There is a book about how this all came about called "The Hijacking of the Humane Movement".

When my wife was in Portland, OR, attending the school for the blind, she had one of the ultra whacko nutjob PeTA morons follow her when walking with her Guide downtown for about two blocks shouting "Animal abuser!, animal abuser!". A Portland PD officer on a bicycle had to detain the woman so my wife could go on her way. Frightening.
