Shelter Destroying all animals before Christmas

There is a shelter in NC destroying all animals not adopted before Christmas.  Here is a link:  http://itsrainingcatsdogsglixman.blogspot.com/2008/12/december-20-2008-animals-will-all-be_20.html

And their comprehensive Petfinder page:     http://search.petfinder.com/shelterSearch/shelterSearch.cgi?offset=0&limit=25&zip=&&shelterid=NC523&tmpl=0&lat=&long=&preview=1&sort

I plan to go to this shelter tomorrow and adopt a kitten.  They are 4 hrs away from me one way, but if you live in the area or could be in the area before next Saturday (the longest I could foster), let me know.  I would be happy to pull an animal for you and foster until you could get them.  This is a terrible situation and any help would be appreciated.

    Robeson Co. ANimal Shelter.

I posted about it on CL. Someone else posted saying that a rescue from Maruland was taking all the healthy dogs north.

I was crying about this sense friday, so I'm extremely happy about this news!

Worst part is....I live 15mins away from that 'shelter' and I am not allowed to foster because I have 4 animals. URGGG!!!

I completely agree and I can't understand how or why this could happen. If the media got wind of something like that around here, there'd be people lined up either to volunteer or protest against the place. Could you imagine being on staff there and knowing that while you're going home for the holidays all the dogs and cats will be killed. That is truly disgusting.

Just an update.  I spoke with the staff, and they told me that a rescue is going to take a "few" of the dogs.  The rest will be destroyed.  There were a few other folks there adopting.

These animals are in bad shape.  No vaccinations or vet check.  Filthy puppies, and they think they have a parvo outbreak on one side of the kennel.

I picked up a black kitten.  I'm thinking of naming him Gomez.

I also got a terrier mix puppy to foster and find a good home for.  She's small and brown/white.  If you know of anyone in NC looking for a pup, she will have her 1st shots.  I would want a vet reference.  I would be willing to meet someone as well.  PM me, thanks!  I need to go bathe some little ones.

I am sick to my stomach....... I couldn't work at a place that kills all of the animals so staff can spend 6 days off for the holidays. I would forgo time off to save the animals. It makes my heart ache........ :(

This is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. I keep crying every time I think about it. I've prayed for each animal on their petfinder website and any that weren't listed. I was googling the shelter and it looks like they've had charges filed against them before. So sad.

I'm speechless.  I can't even imagine what kind of people have no problem letting these dogs get put down just so they dont' have to be inconvenienced for a couple of hours.  I mean aren't they supposed to be animal lovers???  I wish I had never looked at their little faces, it's just devastating for someone like me.

Last night was interesting, my girls have decided that the foster pup is much too large to like.  So they avoid her.  Of course, this means that the pup wants to play with them, lol.

Let me know if this would get more visibility as a new thread, but here is the girl for adoption:

I couldn't leave that little face there.  Hopefully, she'll have a happy ending for the holidays.

About her, she cleans up well.  Took a bath and nail trim like a trooper.  She's active and playful.  If you feed her, she's your best buddy.  She's really sweet and loves to snuggle.

I am in no way condoning what this shelter is doing, but this sort of thing happens on a daily basis, not just Christmas.  Shelters with little or no budget routinely do large batches of euthanizations.  The worst part is often the most adoptabe dogs go first.  Most county shelters are required to hold stray dogs for a period of time.  However, owner surrenders somtimes are just give 48 hours or so to find a new home, often these dogs are the healthiest, more socialized.

Most of the 'shelters' in my area(were this shelter is located...plus more like it) euth dogs DAILY. They put time limits on how long these dogs can be held over for owner claims and then they give them anywhere from 3 to 10 days to find a home(depending on the shelter and weather it is owner turn in or not). It's so sad. Bladen, Robeson, Harnett, Cumberland, Hoke, all of the counties in my area, and probably all over NC, euth dogs DAILY or do LARGE euth's weekly or bi-weekly. It so sad. I just want to cry my eyes out and throw up - especially sense I LIVE in this area everyday, and I HEAR people saying "No, I''m not nuetering my dog because he needs to be a man" "No, I'm not adopting a dog, those dogs have something wrong with then, thats why there in the pound, I'm going to a breeder and get my Monster Pitt/Shi-Poo/Imported GSD/WHATEVER!" UGG!!! It makes me sick(especially the Monster Pitt and Shih-Poo deal)

In my county, through the work of my vets non profit program to get animals spayed and neutered (low cost) and assisting for care of unknown injured animals and community education, they have reduced the euthanized animals from 1502 in 1998 to only 195 in 2007. I wish more places would make this a priority.
