oh goodness - no words really - disgusts me

I saw an article probably 18 mos ago in the Wall ST journal in which various grooming accidents were detailed - it was very upsetting and I thought wow can't see myself dropping my dog off at a groomer.  And yes I know there are good ones fortunately I can take care of B's needs so I don't need to try and find one.

Never had a dog that NEEDED to be groomed.....as far as clipped.

To just get a bath at the groomers is not a thing that I feel necessary.....why when I can do it myself?

This incident is just another thing that we must investigate for our pups before dropping them off.

Many years ago I had a beautiful sheepdogX that went in for a puppy clip and nail trim.He was elderly [17]. An impatient groomer yanked his hind leg because he wouldn't hold still for the nail trim and as a result tore his crucief [sp] ligament. He was in alot af pain for weeks and I made the decision to euthanize him. After that I vowed to only adopt dogs I could groom myself.

didn't CNN or Inside Edition do a report about a lot of deaths at groomers? For instance, some dog choked to death as it fell of the table and the groomer didn't care.

That's so sad.  We've had incidents in this area where a dog had its eye damaged by a forced air dryer connected to its crate and another dog suffered brain damage and had to be euthanized after falling off the grooming table and hanging on the noose.  I don't understand why the nooses don't have the type of safety snaps that come on collars.  That seems like an easy fix.  I ask around at the dog park.  The bad places are talked about ALOT, so I at least know where NOT to go.  I was very lucky when I had my airedale that the groomer we took him to was very good and well regarded in our community.

A bad groomer is your worst nightmare -- period.  I've been TO bad groomers - and the first one I went to regularly cost my dog his ears.

I wasn't thrilled with the woman's 'help' -- and one day I caught them SHOVING my dog into a tiny crate (he was a BIG cocker -- this was Muffin, not Billy, and was a 40 pound boy).  So I began to watch them carefully.

The next time he wasn't ready and I literally invited myself back to where they were doing the bathing/grooming while she finished clipping Muffin.  I saw the tech bathe ANOTHER dog.  She  picked up the ear flap, SQUIRTED SHAMPOO directly into his ear full force and then she  mushed the ear flap over the ear to "get that shampoo way down in the ear".  THEN she took the sprayer and SPRAYED HIM in the ear.

I said "WHAT are you doing?   WHY would you force water into the ear like that?"

"Oh that's how we do it -- gotta get em clean!!"

"Not my dog" -- I never went back.   Muffin had bacterial ear infections in both ears -- and I'd always wondered where he'd gotten them?  Well if bacteria hadn't crawled in there on their own, spraying them in with water and shampoo might do it!

I was livid -- I couldn't imagine ANYONE forcibly blowing water in the ear -- like a sprayer turned on full!!

Once I found Marilyn I've followed her thru 3 shops (and she's picky too and if she doesn't like how it's done *there* she leaves).  I've driven an hour each way to her home to have them done when she's not with a salon.  It's worth it.  I paid $94 today to have TWO dogs groomed and I added a $20 tip on top of that (and it should have been more but that was all the cash I had on me)

I see people grip about paying $35 to have their dog groomed and I think WHAT do you expect?  It takes hours!  But places use these hot dryers because they are FAST.  Anything to crank things around and make the profit margin bigger.  Not --not me.  I'd rather pay for it and have it done safely.

But people want "cheap" and they want "trendy" and they want cutsie sayings and cutsie treats to buy -- not me.  I want a GOOD groomer.  That's all I care about.  The rest is fluff.

there's this one groomer that used to be in town and it was called "Faux Paws" -- and I thot -- WHY would you ever go to a place named as a pun for "mistake" or "false paws"???  Because it's cutsie?    Get real.  My dogs ears, eyes and skin are REAL.

    Oops -- rant over!!

     Ay... Poor family...

I don't know, I never had a dog that needed a professional groomer so I don't know how that system works, but I guess I would never leave a dog alone while he's being groomed... I always have some crazy scenarios in my head when it comes to leaving my dogs with strangers...

Yikes, I've never heard of anyone doing that!!! There are bad groomers, just as there are bad everything. Buyer beware. When done correctly, grooming is safe and the dog should be happy to see the groomer.

Absolutely!!  Grooming *should* be safe and easy.  I should have said that -- but that's now why I follow the groomer we have wherever she goes.  At this point I trust HER judgement enough that if she thinks she can no longer groom at a place then FINE.

As far as leaving them there -- typically you have to.  I've never seen a groomer yet with enough room for you to wait and typically it takes 3-4 hours.  They don't just start and zoom thru with a dog -- they may bathe 2-3 at the same time so to maximize efficiency.

Yes, you usually do have to leave the dog there. Where I live there are a few places that do grooming while you wait. The dog never is in a cage, total pampering, much more expensive.

I've been lucky enough that the same family has been doing Willow for years.  But, even so I'm right on top of what they are going to do to her that day and who is there that day.  And, I call to check on her while she's there.  They think I baby her but really if for some reason they had forgotten about her somewhere my phone call will remind them.
