NC Trooper - mistreatment of a police dog - updated

This guy got sacked last summer for this and now is saying it is 'standard practice'

The video is under the title 'related content'

    I'm sick and furious

OMG!!  I'm disgusted.  If a "regular citizen" was caught doing that to a dog, they'd be fined and hopefully jailed for abuse of an animal.  It doesn't matter that THREE WEEKS LATER the dog did not have any injuries!  My god......  OMG.....Angry   Crying

    That poor dog.

BF's dad has been in charge of the K-9 unit before, and if one of his guys EVER did that to the dog, they'd be in big trouble. And not just because that dog cost over $8,000 untrained.

Absolutely sickening.  Let's hope he gets "his" someday in return.  Angry

    This is just terrible!!

I think it is abusive, but the trooper may have a point about it being more or less acceptable. Which is even more troubling. Notice the officer only had a 3 day suspension until the matter became public and his department came under pressure to fire him.

That suggests to me that how he treated the dog wasn't considered reprehensible, just a little excessive.

    Poor dog.

Kudos to the officer that took the video, but only one kudo cuz he should have stepped in. The fact that he was only going to get a 3-day suspension is what is truly disheartening.

can we say "ANGER MANAGEMENT"?? i see that a lot in law enforcement and security/guarding type jobs. its a high stress job and after a while it turns into the man in uniform taking his anger out on someone else due to his own frustration. an old cop friend of ours had to step in and knock a fellow officer on his butt because he repeatedly slammed a drunk girls legs in the car door. SHE called the cops because she was too drunk to drive home.. she wasnt being unruly, just drunk in a Taco Bell parking lot... this other cop just didnt have the time of day for her. since she was drunk she didnt have the reaction time to pull her legs inside the car door before he slammed it shut. ETA - the cop who abused this girl is now a POLICE CHIEF in another county..... they didnt have camera phones back then.

i have other similar stories - thankfully none involve animal! - and i wont fault the officer for not intervening. i think he did the right thing. he filmed it and got the guy stopped for good. if he had stepped in he wouldnt have had the evidence needed to end this.

Terrible.......but, I am not shocked to hear it is common practice......what should be under investigation, also, is how they get trained and handled before even turning into a working K-9........I have seen a training facility before here in NC.......no good......

One of my complaints when union procedures and senority determine who gets a job, versus who has the skills to do the job right.  This is not training and this dog would soon become a liability.  To bad the dog was so much smarter than the human involved.

agreed on all points mrv. i'm sure its happened before, when a police dog "attacked for no reason" ... at least no reason any one of us could see or predict. we dont know what goes on behind the scenes.

I am thoroughly disgusted by this and yes the fact that originally it was a 3 day suspension and that his defense is that it is "standard practice" is what makes it insane. My anger needs managing.

Snownose there are many things I love about NC but there is a lot of BS going on that is a bit too 'old school' for me.  DH is a retired 30 year senior law enforcement officer (from the UK) and law enforcement is just a mess here.  The troopers have been in and out of trouble constantly for about 2 years now.  Affairs, sexual favors in exchange for 'warnings', abuse, etc and when this came out I am like what sort of nuts are they hiring?  I sincerely hope that this guy doesn't get his job back.  The public backlash would be incredible.

Must stop this rant I have things to do and I could write a 200 page response on this.

There are no words to describe how disgusting this is.  Makes me want to take a trip to NC to kick his a**!

That is sick.  If they think they need to helicopter their dogs to get them under control, why don't they just TRAIN the dogs properly?  I really hope this is not the norm.  I'm joinging a GSD/SchH club that is just starting and one of the people starting it is a retired state trooper who was in charge of K9 units and used positive training methods.  I'm really excited to join this club even though it's 1.5 hr drive each way.  I also got a note from a trainer who worked with Kenya while I was gone saying she trained police K9s for 15 years and would like to work more with Kenya.  I like to watch the police dog Olympics on TV and those dogs/handlers seem very in tune with each other and have strong bonds.  I really hope that is the norm...
