Man's dog neutered/dies after being picked up by AC

Sad story, be interesting to learn the COD. If they are going to have dogs on the tables this quickly that they don't know, pre op bloodwork, would be smart?

Wow, that's odd.  Spay/neuter law or not....doesn't AC typically have to hold strays for a certain period of time?  When I dropped off a lost dog they said they had to hold him 5 days before he would be put up for adoption, at which point he would be neutered at their expense.

no it depends on how it's written. Some are written that the dog WILL NOT be released to owners until it is altered...period. They do it there and bill the owner. Some may however allow the owner to use thier own vet and they take a certificate back...but I think most do it there.

ETA: sorry all, bout putting this in NDR....moved it.

Yup my Dad had a hunting Catahoula he drove all the way to East Texas to get from California, she got loose, got picked up by AC and when he went to pick her up she was spayed.

He'd only had her for 2 weeks!

Funny story though, we couldnt figure out how she kept getting out of the yard.....she literally climbed the trees and hopped the fence! Crazy girl!

I wonder what exactly caused the dog's death. I'm also surprised they neutered him so quickly.

yep escape artists are really hard to deal with. Some of the recent escapes from showgrounds in these areas with kooky immediate spay/neuter laws could really put a dent in someone's breeding programme.

Personally the world might be better served applying this to repeat sex offenders instead of dogs who may have escaped ONCE.

What if the owners already had a spay/neuter appt a few months down the line?  Wow....how dumb!  The AC does it AND bills them their price?  Not to mention those of us into large breeds that often are not fixed until 18 mos or older...

doesn't matter with them...your dog cannot leave the pound, til it is fixed. I doubt they ultrasound girls either...probably just open n see? I 'spose they might tho.

Ya know, my first thought was "Albuquerque?"

Em was spayed at 8 weeks. No dog leaves the shelter unaltered. They wouldn't even let me WALK her before she was fixed. I could play with her in their runs, under their suprivision, but that was IT.

That is pretty crazy, though. Poor dog!

    LMBO - I agree.

We have a law here, but it is not the same as the one where this dog was. We hold strays for 5 days w/o identification, or 10 days with. Both private shelters and the county on do this - in my county at least. People with unaltered strays are encouraged to fix their pets - and are given information on low cost spay/neuter programs. If a pet is caught 3 or more times, it is concidered to be a nucience animal - and will be altered before returning to it's owner. I, personally, think this is a great program - since most strays are escaping, when unaltered, in search of a mate.
