I thought I had heard something about this on the radio this morning - but I was still half asleep and didn't pay much attention - forgot abou it until now.

They can't even enforce the laws about dog fighting, why not focus on those first?

    • Gold Top Dog

There is a bill up before the house that removes the language that prohibits BSL in local communities.  The bill is HB101.  Currently there is no co-signers in the Senate.  As long as there isn't a co-signer the bill really can't go anywhere.  The folks that watch Florida pet laws are watching this closely but since there isn't a co-signer it is too early to do anything yet.

"They can't even enforce the laws about dog fighting, why not focus on those first?"

My thoughts exactly! But they rather spend MORE money on new laws!

    • Gold Top Dog

haha, yes. FL's laws really have no concern for the fightning sceene - I've seen it too many times - the ACO's don't want to get caught in the middle =/ That is one of the worst things about FL, their laws concerning animal cruelty are just plain crap.

i just got a reply from ... well not from Gov. Crist but an underling i guess.... which is more than i got when i wrote to Gov. Bush.... which was no reply AT ALL! so i'm impressed a little.

but here is what she said to me in an email -

    ***

    Dear Concerned Citizen:

Thank you for writing to Governor Charlie Crist to voice your concerns relating to dangerous dogs and the banning of specific breeds of dogs.  The Governor appreciated receiving your letter and has asked that I respond on his behalf.

Florida law (Section 767.14, F.S.) currently prevents local municipalities from crafting a “dangerous dog” ordinance aimed at a specific breed of dog.  As you may be aware, there is a bill that has been filed that seeks to change this law.  Representative Thurston is sponsoring House Bill 101, which calls for the deletion of language that prevents local municipalities from imposing a ban on specific breeds of dangerous dogs.  You may track the progress of this bill through the legislative process by going to the following website: http://www.flsenate.gov/session/index.cfm?BI_Mode=ViewBillInfo&Mode=Bills&SubMenu=1&Year=2008&billnum=101

The Executive Office of the Governor will follow this bill and all other bills as they move through the legislative process.  Generally, Governor Crist does not take a position on a specific bill until it has been adopted by the Legislature and presented for his action, as bills can be amended substantially during the legislative process.  Please be assured, if final legislation is presented to the Governor on this topic, he will consider your input as he decides whether to sign or veto.

As a final point, you may wish to share your comments with members of your local legislative delegation to express your thoughts on this bill and provide them any information which they might use to make a decision on this issue.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your views with Governor Crist.

    Sincerely,

    Aundra Bryant

    Office of Policy and Budget

    Executive Office of the Governor

i wonder if this is something they tell everyone..

Yep.  It is a form letter.  I know other people that have gotten the same letter word for word.  They must have something prepared as other people have written.

i guess thats good in a way. means i'm not the only one and that enough people have written to require "AutoResponse"  lol

Of folks got an update to this today.  See attached.  Looks like we need to start writing folks.

I received an alert that HB101, the bill that allows for Breed Specific Legislation despite Florida's constitutional ban on BSL, will be attached to one of two other animal related bills. HB1227 prohibits sexual activities with animals, sponsored by Bill Heller, a Democrat from Pinellas County. SB744 is the identical Senate Companion Bill and is sponsored by Nan Rich, a Democrat from Broward/Miami-Dade.

As soon as I have the contact info, I will post it on the first page of my rescue's website www.phoenixanimalrescue.org so you can write the legislators and their assistants to STOP this attachment. If HB101 is attached, and the bill it is attached to passes, HB101 passes. Not too many people will want to stop passage of a bill that prohibits sexual activities with animals, so it is VERY LIKELY that HB101 will just sneak through. This will set a DANGEROUS PRECEDENT for other municipalities in FL to override the State's ban on BSL.

Please take the time to forward this information to everyone you can think of. This requires IMMEDIATE action to STOP THE ATTACHMENT OF HB101 to any other bill.

Haven't seen contact information yet.  I will pass along information as I receive it.

ok, thanks. I'll keep checking back. I'll ask around too and see what I can come up with.

This response came from a person that supposedly talked to the author of the bill it would become attached to.

Senator Rich has told me personally that she would kill her bill before she would allow HB 101 to be attached to it.

I think that we should be on monitoring mode.  Sounds still like nothing to do yet but be ready just in case.
